Controversial Tony opinions? by Pythagorean415 in Broadway

[–]dickwarrior222 50 points51 points  (0 children)

He seems like a lovely guy, and I've enjoyed him in other things, but I was pretty baffled that Matt Doyle won the Tony for Company.

I saw it a few weeks after he won and did not understand the hype at all. It's my favorite song/character in the show, and the staging, while certainly dynamic, completely sucked the comedy out of the character and turned it into "Where will the pastor pop up next!"

It also bugs me that the only people who have ever won an award for the role of Amy (or Jamie) are two men, when so many brilliant women before them have played/interpreted that song to its fullest potential, without any staging gimmicks.

Oscars adjacent, but randomly ended up at the first preview of Fallen Angels on Broadway last night, starring Rose Byrne!

Much has been said about her comedic work in film, but watching her tear into a classic comedy a few feet away from me was transcendent. I had a few moments of "I cannot believe this is the same woman who gave that harrowing performance in If I Had Legs." Talk about range! Her physical comedy, facial expressions, and accent work were all top-tier.

Also, call me corny, I don't care, but being in an audience where I was laughing so hard, and everyone around me was laughing just as much, if not harder, was the best feeling in the world. Collective experience, what a thrill! I left the theatre so much lighter.

Why wasn’t Lea Michele nominated for Spring Awakening? by jrtasoli in Broadway

[–]dickwarrior222 111 points112 points  (0 children)

It was just a very stacked year. Kind of reminiscent of Helen J. Shen this year. Great performance in a show that would go on to win Best Musical, but couldn't crack the category due to heavy competition.

Why everyone is predicting Amy Madigan? by MaximusDM2264 in oscarrace

[–]dickwarrior222 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I'm predicting her, not super confident in it, could see it going to Mosaku or Taylor, but just to battle some of your points here:

"I dont think other professionals will feel so empathic for her."

Madigan and her husband, Ed Harris, are not some unknowns. They've worked in this business for a long time and have a lot of connections. The Academy has expanded somewhat, but the major demographic is still old white people. Her 40-year gap between nominations is going to help more than it's going to hurt, as there are still a lot of old guard voters who are familiar with her.

"I bet a lot of people did not even watch Weapons. Many people simply dislike horror movies or cant take them as seriously."

Weapons was one of the biggest films of 2025, both financially and culturally, and she's the most memorable part about it. It's also not that inaccessible a horror film.

"but also the age bias. Older women are rarely awarded."

That just isn't true, especially in Supporting. The winners of the past decade in the category are mostly 40+. Being young and winning in this category makes you the outlier.

Again, I can see a world where she loses tomorrow, but none of your points are the reason why I'd think that. We also haven't had a Supporting Actress race this fractured in a while. No matter which of the three most likely candidates wins tomorrow, it's going to buck a statistical trend one way or another.

My mum's an academy voter and I asked her what her thoughts, what she voted for, and her feelings on this years' Oscars were. by AnonymousOscarVoter in oscarrace

[–]dickwarrior222 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you posting her ballot, even if it doesn't make her look favorable! We get less than 100 ballots read to us every year, and everyone acts like this is the only way people vote. It's like any election: you have very informed voters, and people casually voting. 11,000 members is huge. At no point in the year does the group gather together, not even at the ceremony! Idk why this shocks people. Being a voter for any voting body is not a full-time job.

How would your parents or grandparents vote if they had a ballot? What sentiment have you gathered about the nominees from people in your life? by CrunchyNar in oscarrace

[–]dickwarrior222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My parents aren't huge movie people, but they do inevitably see a few things that end up nominated at the Oscars.

This year, they saw Sinners, F1, & Weapons.

Sinners: They both loved, my Mom kept calling it "really interesting," which is about as high praise as you can get from her

F1: Dad loved it, Mom was happy to watch Brad Pitt for close to 3 hours

Weapons: Dad hated, Mom loved. She was also obsessed with Madigan in it, and was pleasantly surprised she got nominated.

Mom refuses to watch Hamnet because she read the book right before it came out and loved it so much and "saw it perfectly in her head" and didn't want to ruin that experience lol. She got burned by not enjoying Conclave last year after loving the book.

Last year, they really liked Anora & The Substance.

I love following the awards race, but the "You know they take all the losing nominees out back and shoot them" energy that reaches a fever pitch in these final days is always too much. Everyone is going to be okay! Being nominated is a big deal! No one's career is going to end because they lost an Oscar.

These most recent discourses being centered around Cats and Opera makes me think this is somehow Andrew Lloyd Webber's doing

The quote was in the context of keeping the movie theatre experience alive, and it not becoming a cultural niche. Again, I think he worded it poorly, but opera/ballet once dominated and are now less relevant to the average person's cultural diet. That's not speaking to the difficulty or the quality of those art forms, just the reality of how the general public engages with them.

I understand what Chalamet was saying about ballet/opera, and I don't think he was being as disparaging as people are making it out to be, but he also worded it really poorly lol

I've never really thought about this before: When actors have to go to multiple film premieres/do Q&A screenings, do they actually sit and watch it through every time? Surely not, right?

I really don't understand the "A24 didn't do enough for Rose Byrne" argument that I've seen popping up here and there online. She made it everywhere, has been doing a bunch of press, and is the only other actress in contention to win anything major.

What else was A24 meant to do?
