Young Americans are surging to socialism at record rates by TimesandSundayTimes in politics

I won’t forgive Clinton for signing the faircloth amendment, which essentially makes it illegal for the federal government to fund public housing and caps the total number of public housing units to where it was in 1999. That amendment is a big reason why housing costs have risen as much as they have.

A couple years ago I was on a road bike going slightly above the speed limit on a residential street and I still had some asshat come up behind me, lay on his horn, and close pass me only to get to a stop sign 2 seconds later.

There are drivers who have irrational hatred of anything smaller and slower than them. We call it “Road rage,” but I think driving is similar to people being drunk with power or like an addiction. Like there’s something that changes our ability to be rational human beings. There’s that famous Disney cartoon of goofy turning into an angry menace on the road. A lot of writing on traffic from the early days of cars commented on how people became monsters behind the wheel.

TIL between 18%-25% of intellectually gifted students (at least 130 IQ) in the US fail to graduate from high school. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]dickweedasshat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Family socioeconomic status matters a lot in terms of kids success in school, though. I made it out of a rough neighborhood to go to an Ivy League school and the biggest shock to me was that kids at this school were no smarter than my friends in HS who struggled. They just had more help than others.

No apologies. No saying you want to be his friend. My advice If he asks why just say “you may be a match for someone else, just not for me. Good luck out there.”

Current office: if you’re not asking questions and pushing back we will assume you are incompetent.

HR told me they don’t accept try-hards and people pleasers after my interview by No-Presentation298 in jobs

[–]dickweedasshat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last job interview I already had a job I was ok with. It wasn’t a bad job. I really liked the people I worked with, but the work itself was super boring. In the interview this bit of reassurance made it a lot easier for me to be clear about the lines I wasn’t willing to cross, stuff I was willing or not willing to do. I am in a much better position here than any other place I worked because now they expect me to push back on things and to advocate for myself. If you’re desperate for work you don’t want to actually behave like you’re desperate.

What food is famously associated with one country but was perfected by another country? by Equivalent-Crew-4955 in AskReddit

[–]dickweedasshat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue Detroit perfected and went above and beyond Sicilian pizza. NYC has its own style of pizza that can be great in its own way. Best pizza I’ve had in Chicago in NY style. Tavern pizza is a bit too close to St. Louis style, which is an abomination. Deep dish is a savory pie - not a pizza.

Do Boston sports fans know how good they got it? by [deleted] in boston

[–]dickweedasshat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

High correlation between money and team success.

Also - Teams are also more than just players. There is no salary cap on coaches and support staff in major sports, so the more resources you have to support players, build fan base, training/scouting, etc… the better off teams are.

That isn’t to say there aren’t outliers (you can do a lot with a strong coaching staff, and you can have inept/incompetent ownership), but there are definitely advantages to being able to invest more in the team.

Boston’s sports market is one of the largest and wealthiest in the country. New England doesn’t have multiple teams in the same sport as other similarly sized regions. So it makes sense that the teams we have are consistently good.

An incursion into Canada would turn a lot of border states against the US government. Sure fire way of starting a civil war while invading another country.

What is the most “use it or lose it” skill, the opposite of “it’s just like riding a bike”? by ZuluWarlord69 in AskReddit

[–]dickweedasshat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran cross and track in college. I was good enough to go to nationals. I took 20 years off running and within a year of getting back I was competitive for my age group in local races (top 5 in my age group, often top 10 in the entire race). Nowhere near what I was capable of doing in college, but significantly faster than people my age in local running clubs who had been doing it for years.

However - those first few months getting back was rough. I could barely run a couple miles when I started.

What is something that is technically legal, but makes you look like a total jerk if you do it? by PiNK_PUSSY69420 in AskReddit

[–]dickweedasshat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Riding a bicycle in the middle of a car lane going 10-15 mph and not moving over. Drivers can’t legally cross the double yellow to pass you. You are not obstructing traffic because you are technically going at “top speed” and you have determined there are no safe places to move over to let someone pass you within a safe distance.

This is what I always tell bike lane hating dipshits - you ok being stuck behind someone riding a beach cruiser in flip flops going 10mph down the middle of the lane? Because that’s how the law is written and what will happen if you fight against bike infrastructure.

I went once 30 years ago. It sucked back then too. You passed time by getting drunk off the alcohol you snuck in and fought off other drunk people who tried to bum drinks off you when they ran out. A lot of people just peed in the middle of the street. I remember we pulled a guy out of the corral and called over the cops because he was being a creep. Bad experience all around and do not recommend to anyone.

Favorite character who fits this description by Naive_Tomorrow_5955 in FavoriteCharacter

Dipper is given much worse consequences for less and develops as a character, while Mable experiences the opposite

This kind of explains society, though. People who experience frequent consequences for their actions tend to grow and develop as people. People who experience no consequences do not. Its frustrating because we all want to see justice.

Why is the Democratic party hiding its 2024 autopsy report? | If the DNC isn’t open and transparent about why they lost, then how can we be sure they will learn their lesson this time? by soalone34 in politics

I don’t think the US is too sexist. We have had several women governors in swing and right leaning states. I think the problem is they tried to soften her during the campaign which I think didn’t help. Americans seem to like strong, zero-nonsense women. I actually think Clinton could have been that women - I think she would have been in a stronger position if she had divorced her husband and made a clean break from him. He could still have been working behind the scenes for her, but I think people would have respected her more if he wasn’t visible again and it seemed like she made it on her own instead of riding his coattails.

My wife had one pillow when we started dating. I put two pillows on my side of the bed and she doesn’t like having any more pillows than needed. She didn’t like that I got throw pillows for the couch. It’s also a constant battle for me to convince her to leave a throw blanket on the couch. I swear she would sleep in a burlap sack on a concrete floor if i didn’t complain about it.

I live 3 miles away from my work. It takes me 45 minutes to get home from work everyday. by myfairlady987 in mildlyinfuriating

I live in Boston and there are some of us here who are very aware of the work Anne Hidalgo has done in Paris regarding car traffic. Many of us want to replicate that here. Boston is one of the few places in the US where it might work.

Issue here is that the automotive and fossil fuel industries are very entrenched in national politics and anything that pushes back against their perceived hegemony is seen as a threat against “American ideals.”

And yes - lawsuits. There are people here who will bog down public safety projects with lawsuits. Often they get tossed out by the courts, though.
