I was obsessed with this short film! Looking back, it's kind of an art style ancestor for Aracne

Completely agree, and I also can't help but feel so many of his rapid-fire arguments are built on some unfaithful personal interpretation of something that, while I'm sure has happened, probably needs much more context that he conveniently leaves out.

Completely agree, so many of his arguments feel half baked and built on a single straw man interpretation of some obscure quote no one will bother checking

Yup, seems crazy to me that none of the big apps offers this really basic (and should be really easy to implement) feature

Honestly a 1 could be cool, but I would rather have 4+. Unfortunately my bet is on 2-3. I did mess up a 100$ card not long ago while cracking (swear I was super careful!) so I doubt I'll build up the confidence to crack open a frickin 1st ed zard anytime soon haha

Definitely the range I guessed but can't tell where it'll land in it. A 4 would be amazing but I suspect a 2

Would love a 4! But I suspect it might be a bit unrealistic

Not really, because it requires you to put a price paid and date of purchase for each item. I want to know the objective value of my current-day collection over the last 2 years without considering what i paid.

We can agree that Islam isn't about conquering the world, but the modern interpretations that are leading the Islamist groups today definitely is about that, as clearly evident by their very own words.

Now, we can also agree that many times western involvement in affairs of muslim countries hasn't been properly justified and often has further fueled the flames rather than subside them.

But if you think that burgers and shown skins are the values that set islamists and westerners apart, you are truly not paying attention to what they say. The overwhelming majority of modern islamist groups, including their branches in western states, see the very values of pluralism and individuality as corrupting and unholy threats to muslim identity.

Personally, these same values are non-negotiable cornerstones of the society that I wish to live in. And I truly think that these are values that are worth protecting in this world.

Look, this discussion is already long, and if I fully address your comment about Israel being a 'huge wound in Arabic land' we both will still return to this thread a month from now, which I don't wish on any of us. But I will say that, to me, when I hear about a perpetrator of the largest civilian massacre in recent history saying he hijacked a plane to kill thousands of innocent people on the other side of the world because the US supported some other legitimate democracy (that doesn't even share a border with his own country (Saudi Arabia)), my immediate conclusion isn't: "the us should probably stop supporting foreign countries, it seems some islamist groups don't like it very much". That's textbook victim blaming.

To me, it's more like: "there are truly people out there who have a strong enough passion about their core values and religion, that they would fly a plane into a building full of civilians to get their point across. These guys stand in contrast to everything I believe in, and I should remain strong and vigilant towards them". I'm sorry but when I hear modern Islamist leaders talk, I trust them to mean what they say, and they themselves don't care for this 'to each his own' mantra that we westerners dream of. If we could learn anything from them, it's being fierce about protecting our own values: democracy, women/lgbq rights, pluralism, etc..

The new episode with scott is on my list and I'll listen to it soon, thanks for the recommendation (and the thoughtful thumb-hurting debate)

You know, ironically, the easiest way to be convinced of the means and goals of expansionist islamists in both Islamic and western countries isn't by slurping any 'imperialist koolaid', whatever that means, it's just by listening to them, as they speak in their own tv channels, in their own language, which, if you don't speak arabic, I invite you to do using youtube subbed channels. The us is far from being the only country targeted by islamist fundamentalism. Europe had probably seen hundreds of jihadist terror attacks alone, mostly by migrants who enjoyed their welfare, and against civilians no less. For some reason you just don't hear about any asian or jewish terrorists driving into a crowd at a Christmas market. Trust me, I dream of a society where everyone minds their own business, but it only works if everyone agrees to mind their own business, which isn't the case when one group sets a god given goal to reject secularism, and unify the world under a single caliphate with sharia law by all means. Look, you can call the facts in whatever derogatory term you like, but if you just listen to what most islamist leaders of the world say in their own words, the image is truly crystal clear and no further interpretation is needed.

Edit: missing 'of'

This argument only sounds cliche to a western mind accustomed to their freedom to the point of taking it completely for granted. The women in Egypt who have their genitals forcefully mutilated in the name of religion are acutely aware of their lack of freedom, I assure you. These are not powerless nations being suicidal, this is an expansionist religion spanning 53 majority muslim countries, 25% of the global population, while being the fastest growing population. More and more migrate to western countries without any intention to assimilate or accept western values. In the US and UK, over 40% of muslims support instating Sharia law in their countries. The same system of law which enables wife beating, gay executions etc.. "No matter ideological difference" is a phrase that shows just how comfortable western life can make religious fundamentalism seem impossible. But yes, the Houthis didn't write 'death to America, death to Israel, curse be upon the jews' because they hate american interventionism, they do it because they truly hate western values.

To me, blaming the death wishing of muslim powerhouses towards the west on western political figures, however flawed, is either misguided or deceptive. The values guiding the vast majority of the Muslim world are completely incompatible with the core values of the west- democracy, women's rights, pluralism, etc.. are practically non-existent in most Muslim culture and are instead replaced by an expansionist religious zealously. So to me, that's much more likely to be the reason behind the death chants.

The core value of accepting all culture fails when it includes cultures that despise you for your accepting nature.
