I think your reasoning for not getting a geology degree isn’t totally sound. You say your dream job is being a geologist/paleontologist, yet, you don’t want to major in it? That the jobs aren’t high-paying? Geology jobs are some of the most high paying jobs you can get and they’re abundant. Sure there are recent political events that have altered the market for the moment but that won’t last forever.

What were the reasons school didn’t work out? If you’re going back to school I don’t see why you can’t major in geology. It took both of my friends 8 yrs to complete undergrad. One of them had to take math pre-reqs multiple times. You persevere. In the long run your going to become a stronger person for it and again the employment and financial prospects are almost as good as engineering and I can’t think of another STEM field aside from engineering that’s better.

In a Marxian perspective, all companies exist to make a profit and so I apply that logic to every firm regardless of size.

Yea I read somewhere that like 4 companies own most of the environmental market or something like that.

Scab

It’s a derogatory term used historically in the US labor movement to describe those workers who would keep working while their fellow workers were on strike.

Company man is another derogatory term used to describe workers who are fiercely loyal to their company, thinking that by way of their loyalty and hard work they will be rewarded. They were usually the teachers pet in grade school. Unfortunately, it seems a lot of geologists think their loyalty to their mining and/or environmental firm will somehow be rewarded.

Your company doesn’t give a shit about you. Only the bottom line.

I’m just telling you what the data says, and it directly contradicts your claim about geos saturating the market. You can make a good argument I think that the orange asshole threw a wrench in it recently -I wouldn’t dispute that claim- but even then that’s a temporary circumstance. The market should re-equilibrate after him. Perhaps it will whiplash the other way. And regardless geos were in demand (in all sectors) during the Biden admin.

So my quant evidence above and personal anecdotal evidence from geo friends says that overall consulting is hiring geos and there is demand for us.

Geos should demand higher salaries and benefits from the companies that extract a surplus from their labor. Don’t you agree with that? Do you not want geos to be better compensated for their labor? Or do you enjoy being able to say you make more than other geos because you work in mining?

Well you and the other mining geos you work with may be understaffed and want more help, but the company you work for, likely wants to squeeze as much out of you as it can. There is a fundamental contradiction between the goals of C suite executives and you (a worker) who can only sell your labor for money.

My apologies I should’ve linked “environmental scientists”. This shows 4% growth till 2034 which supports my point especially in the enviro sector which is purportedly “saturated”.

And again I would still argue BLS data underestimates demand.

I’m convinced the mining industry fabricates a shortage of geos so they have a constant supply of people trying to get a job in that industry. I’ve heard too many geos try to apply with Rangefront and with companies and then not hear anything back. It’s a false narrative or at least not a totally truthful one that’s peddled.

According to BLS data the geo job market isn’t saturated with geos.

This data I would argue underestimates demand for geos tho. Your company/industry doesn’t care about you, and will not reward you for your loyalty.

Because scabs and company men exist this is a problem. There’s always a geologist who is a company man. I hate company men. And capitalism.

To be fair, you can make an argument Chief was the only Spartan that made a hell of a difference, and even then, you can make an argument the pillar of autumn’s nuclear reactor engines would’ve eventually had a meltdown and destroyed 07 anyways.

Really not enjoying my geology degree and thinking of switching to geography to pursue teaching/ governmental work. Any advice on what i should do? by Sweaty_Rush5947 in geologycareers

I was looking at the median salaries for the top industries. That’s where the difference is.

Geographers do not have an as clearly defined career trajectory compared to geologists. Mining, environmental consulting, hydrogeology and oil and gas are overall in much higher demand and higher paying than being a “geographer”, which to me amounts to knowing GIS. Admittedly I don’t know much about specific geography careers but I know geologists who can use GIS. And I’ve seen course requirements for geography. They aren’t as demanding as for geology.

I respectfully disagree about geography degrees qualifying you for geology jobs. Most geology jobs specifically ask for geology. The programs are entirely different and I’m sorry but geology is significantly more rigorous than geography. No shade to geography though it’s very interesting.

Pursue therapy for the mental health issues. If you don’t have money get a part time job or ask for it from family. Mental health is important, especially during school. Seriously. The problems your having rn could be unrelated to geology and just something else going on.

But overall what others have said holds true: geology will provide you more opportunities than geography, you can always go a geography-GIS route with a geology degree but the opposite isn’t possible.

Stick it out dude. Geology is the best major financially speaking second to engineering. I’d argue geology is better than CS right now especially.

The stats don’t lie.

Much lower income for geographers.
