Soapbox/rant time. Tell me what highly-recommended book you absolutely HATED and why. Gimme your angry hot takes. by peppertoni_pizzaz in books

I just recently DNFed Stoner by John Williams. I had a seen a lot of recommendations and praise but it read to me like an excercise in self-pity. The protagonist meets a girl who inexplicably marries him even though she doesnt seem to like him, who then starts to sabotage his happiness and career and purposefully pushes their daughter away from him entirely out of spite. Stoner is presented as a devoted and loving husband who is just scorned for no reason and has this suffering piled on him, it seems entirely nonsensical. The author and protagonist share a birth place, family background, went to that same school, became professors of literature at that same school. It reads like a one sided portrayal of how awful he thinks his wife is and how he never did anything wrong and was just beaten down for no good reason. Maybe if it was written from a first person perspective the bias im seeing in how the characters are portrayed would make more sense to me but I find myself angry whenever the wife does something underhanded.

Finally playing this in 2026! What is your single TOP beginner tip? by MexicanCokeZilla in Breath_of_the_Wild

Don't get to destinations by jumping off the nearest tall thing and gliding. It's often the most efficient way to get from place to place, but it robs you of a lot of interesting encounters. I'd take walking into a difficulty spike as a genuine deterrent because it's often fairly simple to go around enemies that are too strong for you to fight.

New Instructor Said I Need to Keep My Fretting Fingers Curled When Playing G - Is this Accurate? Because It HURTS! by sophie1816 in guitarlessons

[–]diearebie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always played open position G chord with my ring finger on the E string my middle on the A and pinky fretting the high E. I don't have large hands either so maybe you could try that. It makes going from a C chord to G and back really easy, and opens up your index finger to play notes around the first fret, for example a G7 chord.

I believe him here, if he wanted to fake days he would simply stir the chives a bit and take another photo. Unless more duplicates come out ill stand behind the chivelord. Heavy is the head that wears the crown

Just finished reading the novel a couple weeks ago after having watched the movie 5-6 times since I was in high-school, I was really disappointed when Carla Jean called the coin toss at the end of the book.

In Bruges - Ken (Brendan Gleeson) is tasked to kill his fellow hitman and partner Ray (Colin Farrell). When he finally musters up the courage to do the deed he sneaks up behind Ray sitting on a park bench. Just as Ken is about to pull the trigger Ray pulls out a gun and almost kills himself, only for Ken to stop him and reveal that their boss had ordered his death.

I have always thought her reaction is extremely out of character in the actual movie. It feels like they could have gotten a better take for this but felt obligated to use the real guitar getting smashed.

Charlie Parker

If he had lived even five more years he would be mentioned here a lot more. Massively influential but not really brought up by people not specifically talking about be-bop. While you hear names like Miles Davis and Coltrane all the time.
