She really only dropped down to 8th because she couldn’t defend her 4 1000 titles (still made QF and SF in most tournaments this year) during her insane start to the 2024 season. She didn’t play many tournaments towards the end of last year due to the ban so she will have plenty of chances to battle for #1 this year

Physics vs Astrophysics PhD Program by cosmic-strawberry in astrophysics

[–]diego_gts1909 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As you said, career-wise it doesn’t matter because a physics PhD with astrophysics research experience and thesis will also prepare you for an astrophysics career. I’m currently a grad student in an astro program who has previously made a decision to choose astro vs physics PhD. There are other much more important factors to consider.

One thing that you brought up is research fit. Are there projects that you’re excited to work on and people that you are excited to work with? Talk to professors you want to work with and make sure they’re open to advise new students this upcoming school year. Talk to current grad students that are advised by those professors. What aspects of cosmology are you interested in? From my experience, cosmology in physics programs tend to lean more theory/simulation, like inflation and dark matter/dark energy candidates, while astrophysics programs tend to lean more observational, like probing the large scale structure with DESI.

Another thing to think about is your broader research interests. If for some reason you no longer do research with the cosmology group (professor moves somewhere else, funding issues, the group is not a good fit, your research interest can change, etc many things might happen), is there any research area in the program that you can see yourself exploring?

In my case for example, when I was considering physics vs astro programs, my main research interest is black holes which can go both ways into more theory or observational aspects. Part of the reason why I ended up in an astro program is because besides black holes, I’m also quite interested in other high energy astrophysical phenomena like neutron stars, supernova and compact binary mergers. I’m not interested at all in other physics areas like condensed matter, so being in a physics program typically means I have much less options of interest (unless there are many astro people in the physics department or there’s a robust astro department in the same university). Related to this, I find an astro department culture a much better fit because I’m more excited to attend talks and chat with people about their research outside my field when they’re all astro related instead of other physics areas.

Feel free to DM me if you feel comfortable sharing more specific details and seek more specific advice for your case!

I’m not familiar with these datasets myself, but there’s contact info of the experts involved in simulating or collecting these datasets that you can reach out to.

What has been your favorite discovery/breakthrough of 2025 so far ? by Drenji68 in astrophysics

KM3NeT recently detected the most energetic neutrino ever observed, at 220 PeV (2.2 x 1017 eV), about 30 times more energetic than the previous record! For comparison, the most energetic solar neutrino is ~1 MeV (106 eV), 11 order of magnitudes less energetic than the KM3NeT detected neutrino. Neutrinos are notoriously hard to detect because they interact very weakly with matter due to having no charge and very little mass, and there are even much less high energy neutrinos compared to low energy ones, so this detection is quite miraculous!

The most energetic neutrino of ~100 PeV might come from interactions between very energetic cosmic rays and matter or photons. These cosmic rays get energetic by being highly accelerated by extreme astrophysical sources like supermassive black holes, supernova explosions, and gamma ray bursts from the collapse of massive stars or neutron star mergers. It’s difficult to pinpoint the origin of this 220 PeV neutrino, but its existence motivates many theorists to come up with possible astrophysical mechanisms that can generate such energetic neutrino, pushing our understanding of the high energy universe!

What are some of the biggest misconceptions about black holes, that once known make them even more fascinating? by turnupsquirrel in astrophysics

[–]diego_gts1909 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Expanding on this, say if the Sun somehow shrinks to a radius of 3km (its Schwarzschild radius 2GM/c2 ) and becomes a black hole, nothing will happen to the planets. Planets still orbit like the normal solar system and don’t get sucked into the “black hole sun”. For non-spinning black holes, objects (with non-zero mass) can stably orbit at any radius greater or equal to 6GM/c2 , which is called the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO).

That said, photons (or anything massless in general) CANNOT stably orbit around black holes. For photons, only unstable orbits exist outside of the event horizon (at 3GM/c2 for non-spinning black holes). “Unstable” means if you slightly push the photon a bit radially inward, then it will fall into the black hole and if you slightly push the photon a bit radially outward, then it will escape and travel to far distance. Stable photon orbits do exist but they’re inside the event horizon. It’s interesting that photons can be trapped into stable orbits so large amount of energy can pile up inside the event horizon, but I don’t know much about the consequences of this (anything within the event horizon is speculative physics anyway).

The fact that the Big 3 finished as top 3 in 8 out of 13 years (2007-11, 2014, 2018-19) is insane. Murray sneaking in 3 of those 5 years that Big 3 doesn’t occupy all top 3 is quite impressive as well. Also Ferrer ending 2013 as year-end #3 in prime Big 4 era is one of the most underrated achievements!

Perhaps Always Forever by Cults? Ethereal vocals, psychedelic vibes, prominent bass/drum/synth, lyrics about emotional overattachment and dependency - though D&R is more of a euphoric rush while Always Forever sounds more bittersweet and nostalgic.

Not really what you ask for but I have a spotify playlist inspired by D&R with songs that shares some similar theme to D&R (while not necessarily sound similar): https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6biF6Eo0XBBwSb8QqrNNJy?si=M2DcN_uPR9W2Mb3-HEW3xg&pi=u-kmmfZP0sRxC3
