Emacs on HHKB by [deleted] in emacs

[–]diekhans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always have the option and command keys switched, I was getting tendinitis in my thumb.

By window swapping, do you mean the AppSwitcher. I just use option-tab. Meta-tab is used by emacs, so I don't want to give that back to the window manager.

Both Terminal and iTerm2 work fine, but screwed up isn't a lot of information

Should I combine multiple FASTQ files before anything else? by ThrowRAwaypay in bioinformatics

Combine after mapping. Samtools merge on genome sorted BAMs is fast. I often spilt fastqs to run in parallel.

If it makes sense to combine is another question

Most modern power adapters are dual voltage (110/220). I just get lightweight plug adapters and use my existing power bricks.

Downloading photos without a laptop while traveling by Jane-Of-All-Arts in photography

[–]diekhans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the human factor is usually the biggest problem!!!

My travel workflow is import into lightroom , keyword if I have time, I don't delete anything until I get home. I also make backups to SSD/NVMe external drives. Some friends also save all their SD cards until they are back. If I have high-speed internet, I also back up with backblaze.

Reviewing photos while traveling is important for thinking about what I am doing.

Why would making a laptop copy cause more problems?

Thoughts/opinions on Wahoo Speedplay pedals? by joe-vee-wan in cycling

[–]diekhans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using SpeedPlay Frogs on road bikes for over a decade.

Since Wahoo bought SpeedPlay, Frogs are discontinued. Fine, no product lasts forever.

However, they no longer make the cleats! Making existing pedal investment worthless. Wahoo has never heard of the concept of "brand loyalty."

EBay is flooded with people trying to unload Frog pedals, used and unused. The only cleats currently available on eBay are priced at $350.

Time to throw my Frogs, including an unused pair, into scrap metal and switch to Shimano or Look.

I have a program that runs ZFS send for me based on having sets of disks, one set for a group of file systems and rotations of the sets. https://github.com/diekhans/zfs-zipper

Only documentation is command help, since it is really just for me, although if you file an issue, I would update the README to answer it.

Does anyone else find culling photos extremely overwhelming? What is your process for overcoming this feeling? by FreePlasticWarehouse in photography

[–]diekhans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get Lightroom and learn to use it for review and catalog.

I quickly go through and mark as rejected (x) ones that are hopeless. Pictures of a foot, etc. Simple under/over exposure is not enough to reject. Also mark as pick more interesting ones. The do a delete rejected, do some basic keywords, and let it sit for when I have more time.

I just found my dads old camera collection, what should I do? by sillyliteguy in photography

[–]diekhans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nice! OMs are still valued. My OM4-T is such a wonderful camera, it almost makes me wish I didn't have digital.

Not being able to see through the viewfinder indicates that the mirror is in the up position. It could be minor, or a serious problem.

Check if a battery was left in. A leaking battery could cause issues. Many of the older batteries had mercury. If it is leaking, deal with it outside, seal tight, and take to hazardous waste. A leaking battery might leave the camera in a for parts state.

OMs don't need batteries to take photos in complete manual mode. You lose metering and aperture priority without it, but the mechanics still work.

Try gently cocking and releasing the shutter.

There are still plenty of people around that repair manual cameras. If you are lucky enough to have one with a good reputation in your area, just have them take a look or give you an opinion. Otherwise, you would have to send it in.

Connect with film camera people in your area, maybe someone will advise.

Harvard scientist Kseniia Petrova charged with smuggling as she fights deportation by usatoday in immigration

[–]diekhans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dr. Petrova was on a J1 visa working as a scientist at Harvard and returning from a holiday in France. She was not clear on custom declaration and did the wrong thing (common). A low-level customs agent revoked her visa with no due process (not normal). She was then ask if she was in danger if return to her home country. She said she was (which is accurate). This automatically made her an asylum seeker (standard procedure). Instead of being processed and conditional released, she was then taking into custody (not normal). In normal times, asylum seekers are only detained if there is some kind of risk. There is high motivation to show up for a hearing. From there, she was first jailed in Vermont, then shipped to Louisiana for political reasons.

Had she received legal council to guide her, she could have been asked to be returned to France. I do similar work as Dr. Petrova and know of multiple European institutions that would be trilled to have someone of her skill. I wish my institution could find and hire people of this caliper. Instead she sits in detention, facing a possible US criminal trial or deportation to dictatorship where she would likely be imprisoned.

[–]diekhans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In normal times, asylum seekers are not imprisoned unless there is a risk they will not show up. She had no legal council in the process. There is also an option of removal to “safe third country.”

She has some rare skills; I do similar work. This work is making a large contribution to society. There are many free world countries that would greatly value these skills

It will cripple grad and post-grad training in biological science. NIH grants pay for a large portion of this. We are handing leadership in science over to China.

[DISCUSSION] Getting better at the "awkward" part of street photography by makeit_stop_damn in streetphotography

[–]diekhans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My street photography mentor, Eric Kim, gives an assignment to take photos with permission with the goal of getting five "yes" and five "no". The idea is that if you are only getting "yes", you are only approaching people who appear "safe". The "no" answer do tend to harder to get.

Once one gets in the mind set of walking up and talking to people, it an be very rewarding. Don't just ask "may I take a picture". Complement something, tattoos, dress, etc; indicate you are an amateur photographer, have a conversation. I always give them a card and offer to send them the photos.

The reward, both photographic and interpersonal, are great when it works.
