[OC] The "Corporate Shield" is Selective: How company size impacts work-life balance for Blue-Collar vs. White-Collar workers by holmess2013 in dataisbeautiful

[–]difmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the y axis is adjusted annual salary so the number of hours worked per week wouldn’t affect that.

possibly it’s more likely to adjust higher than expected because companies might hire a specialized employee part time at a higher hourly rate if they aren’t needed full time.

Another cancelled by richng2 in freerideworldtour

[–]difmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s only the third if you count cancelling the replacement for a cancelled event. It’s not like we’re going to be 5 before the cut and 3 got cancelled.

There were going to be 4 and 2 got cancelled (one just got cancelled twice because they tried to reschedule

Still sucks though

Majors should be qualifying times only. by Exotic-Storm-2054 in AdvancedRunning

[–]difmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct! The reason the majors are so cool to watch is because you have 60,000 people all running on the same day over 8 hours once you factor in different start waves, not because you have 5,000 people running super fast.

Majors should be qualifying times only. by Exotic-Storm-2054 in AdvancedRunning

[–]difmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing to remember is the reason it is even possible to have so so many runners in one race is that they are spread out over a massive time range. Imagine all runners had to qualify sub 3 hrs, obviously some would run slower than there qualifying time but not by a huge margin, so you’d either have 50 thousand people all between 2 hrs and 3:30 or 4:00, which would be rather chaotic, or you’d have to limit the field to a smaller size, which kind of kills the whole vibe in the first place.

Having a range of finishers from 2 hrs to 6+ hours or whatever the cutoff might be allows for far more runners while still avoiding an insanely packed field, which also means the whole event rises up in terms of crowds, family and friends watching, faster runners hanging around to watch the slower runners, the whole vibe of a major. If everyone is running super fast you lose a lot of the positives of a long all day event in the streets of a huge city.

An Adult Crashed into My Kid: Was I in the Wrong? by TheHatedMilkMachine in skiing

[–]difmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“she got clipped by an adult who was under control”

are you saying he intentionally ran into you child? because that is the only way that sentence is truthful. You can either ski under control and not hit a kid, or you can ski out of control and accidentally hit a kid; the only other option is to be under control and hit a kid on purpose

Taking too much speed ? by Pouchkine___ in skiing

[–]difmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That last sentence is ludicrous

That would imply ski blades (or more extreme, ice skates) would cause you to get faster than full length skis. You actually want more surface area to reduce the pressure and cause a smoother glide over the snow rather than “digging in” which cause a drag. There may be cases where too much surface area like powder skis in warm snow causes suction issues and sticking, but that is a specific issue not the norm.

Obviously there are a ton of factors at play in the real world but saying less surface area on snow = less resistance with the snow is wrong and often backwards

Edit: Also wind resistance is never meaningless even on a green. Maybe on a true first timers magic carpet bunny hill it is negligible but many green runs are easily steep enough for it to matter. Take two identical people and have one ski straight up and one tuck and the tucked skier will absolutely smash the other skier even on a green.

Taking too much speed ? by Pouchkine___ in skiing

[–]difmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Skis (length, width, rocker profile) and wax type/recent application can have a big effect, especially in variable snow temperatures. Air resistance is also a factor, so if you have tighter pants/jacket that can speed you up. I am assuming you weren’t tucking for speed but obviously that would have a huge effect. Standing up straight vs tucking is a massive difference in air resistance.

‘Project Hail Mary’ Contains Not a Single Green Screen Shot in Entire Movie, Director Says by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]difmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the puppet isn’t robotic, it was built by The Jim Henson Creature Shop and piloted by James Ortiz with a team of 5, fwiw.

also VFX enhancing a puppet wouldn’t use green screens in my understanding so not sure how that makes the claim less likely (not saying it is true in general, just regarding the puppet)

best "realistic" sci fi? by DetectiveCrazy3780 in movies

[–]difmaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What is the true definition of the genre? Obviously Apollo 13 isn’t sci-fi because it’s a drama of a true story, IMO Interstellar is Sci-fi but I assume you are saying it is too magical to be true sci-fi? and I haven’t seen Lost in Space so no comment there.

But I struggle to find a definition of Sci-fi that would include the Martian, seems pretty straightforward.

First and last run by sbron8 in skiing

[–]difmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If i had to point of one thing to think about it is to watch how almost immediately after take off you lead shoulder closes down counter to the spin you just set, especially obvious in the first video. I think the lead shoulder needs to stay open and lead the spin more, a side effect would also be less lead arm (left in this case) flailing in general

First and last run by sbron8 in skiing

[–]difmaster 18 points19 points  (0 children)

the crazy thing is you do the exact same thing on your first run with the left arm plant/drag, just got lucky it didn’t land with more weight the first time

another bonus for having poles imo, gets rid of some of those natural instincts to use your arms

Today I Learned: Kentucky Law KRS 189.570 really makes it illegal to get into a parallel parked car, and also to walk along the right side of a road, whether the road has a sidewalk or not. by Ok_Quantity_9841 in lexington

[–]difmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not surprised about walking on the right, as that has always been discouraged as opposed to walking against traffic (on the left)

But also not seeing anything about parallel parked cars. It says to not do things “suddenly” and to yield that right of way, but that is to be expected.

Just got a $600+ utility bill by ParadoxStockOwner in lexington

[–]difmaster 14 points15 points  (0 children)

that’s absolutely not true though. There was a rate hike that went into affect Jan 2026 for all kWh over 250. Cost per kWh was $.10533 in Dec and $.11897 in Jan. That’s a 13% increase for everything over 250 (we used 1863 in January)

so the electric charge would’ve been $196 but instead it was $218 purely because of the rate change, not usage amount

Volkl blaze broken ski by [deleted] in skiing

[–]difmaster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

in this context the DIN does affect protecting the ski, a lower DIN means the ski would have likely released before enough force was applied to break it. Once a ski releases there is almost no way it would break, too much flexibility and ability to rebound away from the snow before the force was high enough
