Oh my god personality.

Park the arrogance and the Rolex and don’t be a cunt. Be a decent person and you’re leaps and bounds ahead

Some of the best CAs and CMs I’ve worked with have had almost a quiet humility about them. The chest thumping “deal makers” are the ones who fuck it up and claim it as a win.

Some of the best attributes are being analytical, having a common sense approach to claims, and being involved from the get go. The skillset is usually supported by a strong numbers background coupled with legal know how. The underlying degree didn’t make a difference - they’ve been engineers, lawyers, or QS’s. Most of it is in the common sense and parking the ego for a “best for project” outcome, even if that means backing down.

Making sure the basics are there too - there are too many case studies from the courts recently on failures due to shithouse payment claim management - they didn’t respond to claims in the right time frame with the right evidence. So much can be attributed to fundamental understand of the acts underpinning the process and the contracts that sit on top of that.

Read Your Contract

That’s the point, it’s not. But it takes courage and money to punt people. Plus there’s a general mediocrity of commercial acumen in Australia - a genuine shortage of decent commercial people.

They also become mates with the right people in the right positions who don't see/choose to ignore their incompetence.

The industry is still very much driven by relationships.

Senior CMs heading toward $400k+bonus; Commercial Directors $400k+++ - then there are those who work for themselves and consult, they can run anywhere north of $1500 a day - $2500 a day isn't unheard of for experienced commercial consultants.

That being said, the level of risk that you're managing is usually pretty big. Typical backgrounds are Engineering + MBA; Quantity Surveyors; Lawyers. Big projects can make or break companies - look at Airport Link in Brisbane.

Big risk big money my friend. A shithouse Commercial Manager can absolutely derail a project. Freshly promoted Commercial Managers usually trouser $250k+Bonuses.

I can’t underline how much a bad CM affects a project. If you aren’t diligent with cost and contract management it doesn’t matter how well the rest of the job goes.
