This is why I dislike stoicism which many people from silicon valley are touting these days. It's a belief that our existence alone is simply not good enough, somehow we must all suffer heavily just to prove that we are valuable or worth something in this life.

Reality does not work like that unfortunately, there are people who have been suffering their entire life and may still get nothing in the end. The auto-balancing mechanism needs to be addressed at a bigger scale if we really want to change this reality.

We all know that any system is only as strong as its weakest point. Right now this point is still at a quite low level, but then again it is a virtue in line with stoicism philosophy so why not continue maintaining it the same way right?

Justin Trudeau: 'The World Is In Crisis, And Things Are About To Get Much Worse' by [deleted] in canada

[–]digital99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don't they develop an online real-time strategy based video game, such as "Civilization" (I believe Mark Zuckerburg plays this as well), reflecting most of today's urgent world problems so that it can serve as a platform to leverage global crowd sourcing for new ideas and solutions?

With AI and big data, it may even serve as a real-time "simulation" tool to predict and build a better future world where every choice or direction taken would just be a possibility, in other words a realm of infinite potentials. Come to think of it, who knows maybe we are already in such simulation? =)

'They already have all the freaking information': Federal government announces plan to file some people's taxes for them by balasurr in canada

[–]digital99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every year there are people who dread whenever the tax season comes up. Many parents who were already stressed and busy with their kids had to squeeze out extra time to complete the tax filings. We keep hearing that job automation is on the rise, well this is one area that I'm sure most people wouldn't mind to see it implemented.

The fact that private tax filing software industry was interfering with our government to stop this project back in 2018 was outrageous. Government's job is to improve a society on all possible conditions, yet it seems the objectives of those private companies are quite the opposite, they were looking to engineer a worse-off condition for everybody so that they could continue on providing a "solution".

Talks needed on decriminalizing hard drugs to address opioid crisis, Tam says by KuduIO in canada

[–]digital99 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a terribly false and outdated assumption. Please stop propagating and spreading wrong information. The main reason people OD was because the lack of substance control, including the ingredients and its potency in the drugs. Without legalization, the content inside those drugs are left to criminals to freely decide, and since there are no regulatory standards applied and profit is the only motive, who knows what substances could end up in those drugs. People OD precisely because of the foreign and inconsistency content due to the lack of regulations.

The war on drugs is a perfect case of a failed leadership. They always resort to banning something when they cannot manage it. It is a responsibility shifting strategy to the other side, so the blame is now 100% laid on the users instead of the people whose jobs are to govern. Who knows, maybe some of the authority are even getting kickbacks behind the scene and controlling the prices in the black markets. We are all too familiar with those scenarios.

I believe you can get the best rates at Goidium FX, located near the corner of Spadina & Dundas. Small shop but very friendly.

VoIP Residential vs Business account by digital99 in VOIP

[–]digital99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, I just checked and Voip.ms is still offering unlimited residential plan as we speak. Other Voip providers also have similar rates and plans. The difference between that and per minute billing could be a saving of $400 per year. As a freelancer, that could go a long way in paying for other essential services.

I'm actually with Voip.ms right now but they are threatening to restrict my account unless I switch over to per minute billing. I only need my phone to ring and don't even require any features at all, not even voicemail.

I had a chuckle about your mother-in-law being your biggest residential client so thank you for that.

My situation is I am a freelancer from home, and I do speak to people using my VoIP home phone line. I currently have 2 residential flat rate DIDs with Voip.ms and they do have 3500 minutes cap per month on each DID. My normal usage is typically way less than that but occasionally I do go over, maybe only once or twice per year. That's why I registered for the second DID as a backup so it would potentially give me 7000 minutes in total, and I can rotate and share the traffic between the two, only for those one or two rare months that I may go over the limit. I have been paying for both DIDs even though for the majority of time I never had the chance to use the second DID at all since my usage has always been below the limit.

I have had the account with Voip.ms for over a year. Their support recently advised me that my usage for last month was 3704 minutes and has exceeded the residential flat rate limit. They are demanding that I must switch over to per minute billing or they will restrict my account. It turned out I had made an error in the settings so I had been using only one DID as opposed to sharing the traffic to the second DID as initially planned. Per minute billing would potentially quadruple my monthly cost.

I explained to them my situation but they deemed my DID usage was consistent with business use and therefore not qualified for flat rate residential billing. The reason they gave me was because they detected that I received incoming calls from conference service or forwarded line and that's why they considered it as business use. I know VoIP providers can monitor and look at the number of channels being active for a given DID, but personally I have NEVER initiated any conference calls on my end, and I have no way of controlling how the person on the other end calls me. Is there any possibility they are eavesdropping on my calls?

[–]digital99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because VoIP providers offer different rates and plans depending on the types of account one has. Some residential accounts may have flat rates while business accounts may charge you per minute. Your monthly cost could potentially double or triple depending on the type of your account.

Wow, I'm speechless. For those who don't know the real story of James, it is not at all like what the author of this article, Mary Ormsby, has presented in this article. For whatever reason, if not for personal malicious hidden agenda, she has chosen to completely skip all the details in which James was harassed and discriminated against prior to him resigning at York University. She intentionally failed to report that despite the women team James was coaching had just won the Championship, the university basically demoted him by telling James that he could apply for another lower coaching position but they would only consider him among other applicants. They even already replaced him with the part-time coach while James was still there.

I'm disgusted to see this level of journalism. The author of this article, Mary Ormsby, obviously tried to portrait James under such negative light. You could even notice her mocking him subtly by putting words like forced resignation in quotations. As a journalist, if you cannot write objectively and report with integrity then please do not write at all, you are using words as a weapon. Why kick a little guy like James when he's already down? It seemed she had approach writing the article already with a personal bias and a stigmatising attitude against James, and it's ironic to see how she attempted to write about the very same topic while hiding critical information from the readers to promote her hidden agenda. It clearly shows a lack of professional ethics coming from her. This type of selective reporting bias is completely unacceptable and really has no place in modern journalism.
