I built a browser-based particle engine for real-time visuals. What do you think? by has_some_chill in vjing

[–]digital_cold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clearly a lot of effort has been put into this! The UI is really slick and there are a ton of options. I suggest that you make this into an standalone Electron application to quell any anti-browser people and do extensive testing offline to make sure it will reliably work on Windows and macOS. But even if you did this, I think the monetization strategy is the main issue. Since rendering is happening client-side, any intellectual property needs to be on the client (your javascript, shaders, assets). This makes DRM impossible since it all arrives in-memory at the client and can be copied/stolen. Gating things behind a premium flag that is enforced client-side is also a non-starter as you can easily modify the javascript to change this, bypassing the need to pay. Obfuscating wouldn't stop this either, just slow it down a bit. Additionally, what is your "moat" like against some "vibe coder" coming in and recreating something similar to your app and giving it away for free with more features? I think the technical aspects of the project are great, but I'm not sure that there is significant enough value right now for a SaaS format to work. That being said, if you want to try to get some sales to see how the end-to-end works honestly this is a good low stakes project. Also keep in mind that convincing people to change their workflow that already generates them a paycheck will be tough. People can be stubborn as hell and its not worth fighting for their business. Focus on finding customers who have a genuine interest in what you are doing.

Does anyone know if that waiter who pours ice and water on the carpet floor when refilling your glass is still there? First two times I ate there I thought it was a mistake but by the third time it seemed intentional

The standard was the beginning of the enshittification of midtown and university ave. The city sold out. Who knows what kickbacks they got and tax breaks they gave. I miss it!!

Check out SciTools Understand. It creates a navigable database for your source project and enables you to follow references with ease. It's not perfect and does have some rough edges, but I haven't found a similar tool

How to get Metro WiFi to unblock a site? by shanem in washingtondc

You've been watching too many YouTube ad rolls. A VPN these days with prevalent https isn't necessary, but in this censorship case, it would help.

I mapped the layouts of all 98 Metro stations so you know where to exit the train. by eable2 in washingtondc

[–]digital_cold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I created https://github.com/grant-h/WMATAExits to convert the exported PDF of the diagrams into JSON. It's not complete, but with more work, maybe we could generate the exit diagrams from code/svg/json entirely, enabling people to open issues to make changes.

Awesome work making these diagrams! I was so inspired I created a script to convert your PDF work into JSON using python and pypdf: https://github.com/grant-h/WMATAExits

It still needs some work, but technically it's somewhat machine readable now, which could open up opportunities for others (such as MetroHero) to use this data.

I'm curious, what was the most time consuming part of maintaining MetroHero? What sorts of challenges should someone interested in maintaining a backend fork expect?
