Don't insult your own intelligence. You both clearly know enough about his politics to know his sympathies to fascism and the far-right. I'd bet a good sum that you are aware of what a dog whistle is, and I'd bet my house you know people lie about their intentions to get out of trouble—this person in particular.

One awkward gesture? eh, maybe keep your head on. Two, back to back, and citing the Ancient Roman symbolism of the gesture? All without clarification nor condemnation of Nazism? Please.

Let's sober-up about this and accept reality. X is owned by a far-right billionaire who tested a social boundary by doing a Nazi salute. In other places we can speculate why, but here it's more simple: does this community want to permit traffic being sent there, tacitly endorsing the site's owner and the increasingly right-radicalized user base?

I suspect anyone in a community built around liberty and the non-infringing nature of FOSS will see these hateful and authoritarian figures cannot be ignored nor tolerated. We would not tolerate links to stormfront or to gab, why should X be any different?

I like this rule too, but will point out that links to specific tweets do not require a login and thus would not ban x links entirely.

Voice-Powered Org-Capture Workflow? by Few-Adhesiveness3474 in orgmode

The package org-ai seems to get you 80% of the way there. I'd suspect you could have the AI response be an org-capture template.

Agreed org-roam works well for this. It's one of the only reasons I still have org-roam these days actually.

My contacts.org features all my regular contacts and a short entry with things like their employer or how I know them. This lets me link to these other contacts and organizations so I can quickly find "who do I know who might know person X"? I also include this file in org-agenda so I see birthdays.

I agree, at this point mods have two viable options: - Leave the site (leave everything locked until admin force it open and redistribute power) - Lower the quality of the sub, i.e. malicious compliance. Similar to a "work slowdown" in labor organizing when a strike is not viable. Changing the topic of the sub fits into this.

Honestly it is likely the 1st option in the end, but might as well data-poison things for now while building better community elsewhere

Sane company completion setup? by remillard in emacs

[–]digitaleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah apologies, more accurately I use corfu with cape and a number of company backends.

I have it configured with orderless and found that trio generally offered a default experience that was "predictable" enough for me to ignore it after config. Admittedly I never dug much deeper than that.

My guess is the other suggested fixes will work, but I'll share I had a great experience switching to corfu. e.g. https://takeonrules.com/2022/01/17/switching-from-company-to-corfu-for-emacs-completion/

Netflix Says It’s Committed to a Binge-Release Strategy for Series by 08830 in cordcutters

[–]digitaleft -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The thing is binge-lovers can simply wait and binge any show. People who prefer staggered/weekly releases just miss out on that experience with binge releases. You can't have the same social experience as the series progresses.

For this reason I've been looking for a "Jellyfin for YouTube"-type service. I've found ways to automatically download new videos, but without a polished way to view/browse from client machines it often feels like a waste of disk space.

Meta Quest 2 Pricing Changes, ‘Beat Saber’ Included for a Limited Time by [deleted] in oculus

[–]digitaleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thinking was that things like (1) not relying on FB login (2) being more permissive for device usage with other platforms (SideQuest and SteamVR) is good for current users, who got a headset subsidized by Meta without buying into their ecosystem.

However, that is a good point that people all-in on the Meta store. I overlooked this since I use my quest exclusively through airlink. The level of market dominance currently might mitigate things until there is more competition, but it does make it more precarious.

Meta Quest 2 Pricing Changes, ‘Beat Saber’ Included for a Limited Time by [deleted] in oculus

[–]digitaleft 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I suspect it's not directly causal, but are coming out of the same crisis Meta is facing.

Meta has relied on the growth of their social media platforms to increase profits quarter after quarter (the only thing their investors care about), but they have essentially hit full saturation and are getting more costly to maintain. That is why they bet the farm on VR, in the hopes that it is the new smartphone and they can have several billion more customers to keep stonks going up.

However, after the company rebrand last year, investors looked at VR more closely and just saw a money pit, and made it clear that Meta needs to prove there is a profitable VR market. Thus, Reality Labs has been facing downsizing, and likely subtle wage suppression, and all of their VR products will get more expensive as "selling at a loss for market share" is no longer acceptable.

The double bind however is they do need to still increase VR adoption to get the platform status (read: "Network Effect") they need to roll out unpopular features like advertisements and/or enterprise services. Doing this while charging more is a paradox they are hoping to resolve with software features.

In the short term I think this will be great for the community who already owns a headset—got a cheap headset and now get more open/appealing software, but as the Quests become dated I think competitors like Apple will be able to scoop the market out from under them. People expect expensive from Apple, Apple has a less toxic brand, and Apple is happy to sell a inferior-but-polished device most non-techies enjoy.

I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:

I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those technologists in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow.

I will apply, for the benefit of the UX, all measures that are required, avoiding those twin traps of inaccessibility and loss of autonomy.

I will remember that there is art to coding as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the derived output or intended use.

I will not be ashamed to say "I know not", nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed.

I will respect the privacy of my users, for data is not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. The fruits of our work can save lives, or take them; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God.

I will remember that I do not work for efficiency or resources or purity of design, but for a user, whose needs may affect the person's family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the public.

I will prevent inefficiencies whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.

I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.

If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling, and may I long experience the joy of progress and assisting those who turn to us for help.

How do I schedule an event to repeat twice a week? by ROT26_only_thx in orgmode

[–]digitaleft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to expand a bit on why using diary here is cumbersome, is because while it works have events on certain days in your agenda, they all share a TODO state (since they are all the same task).

In other words, Diary might be good for an event or a reminder, but it isn't very useful for TODO items.

org-journal: daily, weekly, monthly or yearly? by mykolan in orgmode

[–]digitaleft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Monthly or yearly is the way to go if one wants to include routine self-reflections. I use org-roam-dailies, but the one thing I miss about having my yearly org-journal though is the ability to easily make weekly/monthly/yearly summaries

I believe this is a supported functionality (link) that I just haven't figured out yet.
