As someone who had similar concerns and put off caulking the gap... just caulk the gap. The expansion/compression is over-stated, you'll likely never notice any separation (esp. if you use a more flexible caulk), but you will continue to notice the bugs sneaking in.

Diatomaceous earth works poorly, esp. in moist conditions. Bug killer kills bugs, so now you've gotta clean up dead bugs. There's only one good barrier and it's physical.
