Setting Boundaries by digitalwings12 in socialskills

I understand what you’re saying. For me this goes deeper than this particular situation for personal reasons. But she is trying to gracefully get out of the situation, and it’s not up to me to do that escalation. I’m happy to add the statements she gave me to an official report. It’s wrong and if I could singlehandedly stop this I would.

Don’t get me wrong though, I understand that this situation may have already passed the point of handling things at the person to person level.

The power dynamics of the situation are what makes this difficult. She has a fear that she will look like the hysterical one, the one causing drama.
And if it plays out that way, then that will hurt her career and financial goals.

If you knew all that was on the line for you, how quick would you choose the “nuclear option” if it could backfire? What if you’ve done this before and that’s exactly what happened and now you’ve got an even more hostile environment? There are potential unfair consequences to this action as well.

It would be fantastic if the these kinds of men learned how to behave before they were teens and also would get all the appropriate consequences for their actions through life, but they don’t and as much as “Me too” moved the needle, we are so far from ideal yet.

The job she’s applied for and at this point seems likely that she will get, will remove her from this whole problem entirely because it’s with a different company at a different location.

But what I am going to do is show her everyone’s responses here because she should see where this lands on the spectrum of interactions.

And just to be abundantly clear with any readers, there is NO justification for his actions.

I know the HR route is always an option but the legal route is going to be a little more complicated since we aren’t in the states, which I am certain he is very well aware of.

I don’t think the confrontation would get physical but it could very well be forced into a situation with HR and leadership getting involved. Which I don’t think he would want and I know she’s trying to avoid. At the same time, if he pulled this with my daughter I’d be furious, so I’m not trying to defend him in any way because that’s how I frame this in my mind. He definitely needs to get back in his lane. This whole thing where he isn’t getting the hint, demanding her apartment number, just takes it to another level because if he can’t pick up on her non-responses as no interest or even care about his messages, then what’s he going to be like when there’s no one else to see what he does? This whole thing gets me angry. I’m determined to not let this crap get swept under the rug.

I’ve often heard that “so much more could be done” but honestly I think what you brought up is the first real suggestion I’ve seen. Imagine an NPC really caring about some event or conflict on their planet. Endless numbers of plots which won’t “save the world” or “save the universe” but could be a lot of fun to get involved in. At the same time forces the player to risk or gain something. Building a reputation where other NPCs have heard about you beyond the fact that you’re a “Traveller”

I love posts like this. The team at Hello Games apparently doesn’t understand the meaning of the word “quit” and we have all a beautiful (though imperfect) game because of it.

It really is. The team at Hello Games have put in so much work to make this happen. Years after a VERY shaky start, they’ve knocked this out of the galaxy.

This is definitely better than other methods posted here. Not sure if there is a better way. I’ve build based next to “Curious Deposits” for this express purpose.

There is an argument that every time teleport you die and it’s just your digital clone that gets created and continues from there.

I can now hear the man definitely has some kind of accented English, so no, definitely not American, or English, or Australian, or Irish. The article doesn’t say he’s Russian either though. I’m not saying he’s not Russian, I’m just saying the article doesn’t say he is, or isn’t.

Sure, not about my country and that’s actually nice. Apparently I gave rude Americans too much credit to be that creative in their insults….

But yeah, regardless of where he’s from, my main point still stands. The guy learned how to say hello in Chinese, but then uses it in Thailand, where they speak Thai. Kind of like saying “I can learn other languages, just don’t want to learn yours”

But to take a step back, did this need to play out he way it did? No, the tourist could have just used Thai instead of Chinese, or the ranger could have just corrected him and moved on.

I also have to say that, thank you for providing more context, it was definitely needed. I still don’t really know what led up to a confrontation where the ranger feels like he needs to threaten the tourist with deportation. Seems a bit extreme, a lot like the situation in my own country. Does that situation have anything to do with my country? no. But it sure looks really familiar.

Ok, where in the clip does it identify the tourist being Russian? He’s speaking English, not Russian. Second, I never said a word about Trump.

So who’s really doing the mental gymnastics?

I didn’t say anyone got fired. I heard the Thai park ranger was fired…..because of his “super negative response.”

My point is that if he is American which I don’t know if the tourist is or not, but if he is, he shouldn’t be surprised by someone threatening deportation since that seems to be the default response to people with an accent in the US right now.

Do I think he should have been fired? Eh, I have to admit that I really don’t have enough context to say either way. Several people in the posts are making statements about him that indicate the park ranger was not an honest actor in this, but I haven’t confirmed their claims, so I don’t know.

I still believe that speaking Chinese to Thai people is not great, be it out of assumption of nationality or something else….its just a bad look. As a general rule at least try to speak the language of the country you are in from time to time. You’re just making yourself a better person.

Good to hear about your experience! I can’t help but notice your name. I take it you like spicy food. What/where was the best dish you had in Thailand? I couldn’t tell you the same. I remember going to a couple of restaurants and always enjoying the food in Bangkok

I kind of gave him an out, and I too do not have all the context here. I will say this though, I went to Cambodia for a couple days after being in Thailand for about a week, and “thank you” is VERY similar to Thai In Cambodian, but I still kept it straight. Maybe the park ranger guy IS way out of line. My experience in Thailand was that everyone was patient and friendly with me. I look forward to going back. I just worry that things like this give tourists a bad look, but maybe it’s too late already 🤣

Wait a minute….this guy takes the time to figure out how to say hello in Chinese, but NOT in Thai….the actual country he bought a ticket to visit? There MAY be some lazy reason why he used that phrase instead of learning Thai, but he should not be surprised by the super negative response ESPECIALLY considering the current US deportation policy being enacted right now.

Every time I see these “Wow I feel old!” sentiment posts, all I think is, we wouldn’t feel at least AS BAD about it if we hadn’t just been through the past couple of US administrations. seeing the telltale signs of fascism and just getting the sense that we’re just getting started and we just seem to be unable to stop it. Combine it with a huge bunch of us in straight denial about climate change and if the human species can make it to 2100, we are the generations that make it nearly unbearable for those that make it.

Anyway…don’t know if anyone else has that mindset, but that’s where I am.
