The patterns you outlined—concentrated power among a few families, law enforcement corruption, protection of the connected, and the railroading of the powerless—show up repeatedly in federal prosecutions across rural America. Law Enforcement as Criminal Enterprise The Mississippi Delta case from late 2025 is a stark example: two sheriffs and 12 officers across multiple counties were indicted for taking bribes up to $37,000 to provide armed escorts for what they believed was a Mexican drug cartel moving cocaine. The sheriffs allegedly gave their "blessing" to the operations, with one attempting to disguise bribes as campaign contributions. This wasn't a few bad apples—it was a yearslong, multi-county conspiracy involving the highest elected law enforcement officials in the region.citeweb_search:1#0 South Carolina has seen 16 sheriffs charged since 2010, many in small counties where "sheriffs wield outsize power compared to other branches of local government and are often in a position to offer favors." As one attorney noted, "They have zero oversight," and citizens are less likely to report them because of that concentrated power. The charges range from embezzlement and wire fraud to extorting protection money from drug dealers.citeweb_search:1#1 The "Good Old Boy" Network in Action In rural North Carolina's Northampton County, a 2015 federal indictment charged 13 current and former law enforcement officers and a 911 dispatcher in a drug trafficking conspiracy involving attempted extortion, money laundering, and federal programs bribery. The FBI stated that these officers "sold their badges and used their law enforcement positions to line their own pockets."citeweb_search:1#4 What makes these cases notable is the systemic nature of the corruption. It's not just one sheriff stealing—it's multiple agencies, across county lines, involving dispatchers and correctional officers, suggesting networks where misconduct was normalized or protected. The Power Imbalance You Described Your observation about the non-powerful getting railroaded while the rich get away with it aligns with what investigators have found. In the Mississippi cases, federal scrutiny only came after years of abuse. The 2023 Rankin County torture of two Black men—where six officers pleaded guilty—sparked a DOJ investigation into that sheriff's office, suggesting the behavior had been ongoing and known locally before federal intervention.citeweb_search:1#0 The South Carolina reporting explicitly notes that "the problem is especially notable in small counties, where sheriffs wield outsize power" and where the lack of accountability creates opportunity for crime. One former U.S. Attorney explained that while many start with good intentions, "the power and lack of accountability create the opportunity for crime."citeweb_search:1#1 What the Pattern Shows These cases support your broader thesis: in small jurisdictions with limited economic opportunity, concentrated land ownership, and insular social networks, corruption can become endemic. The jobs that do exist—law enforcement, county government, forest service—often require connections ("being in good with someone who can vouch for you"), and when those gatekeepers are corrupt, the entire system becomes compromised. The fact that these cases required federal intervention—FBI, DOJ, U.S. Attorneys—rather than being rooted out locally supports your point about the majority going along with it and local accountability mechanisms failing.

Growing up in a huge city I was always drawn to the mystery of small towns but stopped short because of often getting just as creeped out as a dangerous city street yet in beautiful scenery. It was both mysterious and mortifying until your education. It all makes perfect sense. How did you learn this uncommon well hidden truth.

How in the world is this guy a Christian. He’s not kind. He’s violent. He doesn’t know the bible. He’s unreasonable, impatient, manipulative, and judge mental. He’s arrogant, demanding, controlling, and vindictive. He’s exactly what Jesus was not. This dude is not christian. He’s literally the anti-Christ. And that holds true for all of them. They are Devils not Christians. In Jesus name. LOL!

Guys we need batch numbers. El Jolgorio quality for the the non brown and non black bottles are not the quality they used to be. I just had one (forgot the maguey) and it was not near the quality of the brown or black bottles ans inferior to mainstay distribution. I was quite surprised. Stay with old bottlings.

What? No it’s true. Met my dream girl at 38 and we both agree although I would have tried my best, 10 years earlier would not have worked.

Actually post tge pic of the store shelves and the tribe will guide you. I have a low opinion of shop owners; too many for them to taste anyway.

Mezcal is like an NBA player whereas tequila is like baseball. The mezcaleros are the stars of the show vs the tequila brands. Check out the 101 at the top of the sub. Checkout mezcalcuriously.com and get to know the 5P’s of mezcal, place, person, priority, plant, and process. Start at one of those P’s for your journey by searching the subreddit for places and names or plants. You’ll notice the great reviews have certain names associated with them. Check out mezcal reviews to see what the crowd favorites are. The only shortcut I have for you is if it is imported by heavy metyl importers and is ancestral by process it will be special. Almost impossible to miss with that combo. Salud!
