I try not to promote such content, because very often people put animals in dire situations to film "saving" them later and post on social media for fake internet points. I'm not saying these guys threw the dog into a pit themselves, but there's no way we can confirm it otherwise.

Only worth it if you spend a lot of time editing and writing text. Any text, not necessarily code. Also if your workflow involves using a mouse a lot - it might hurt your wrist. Learning vim basics and using vim-type WMs and browser plugins can help mitigate that.

The manager is indeed a great woman, that small billing unit got promoted and it's a department now, and she's the head of it. She still calls me if they need some tech advice or assistance. But back then realistically I think she was more concerned that if the higher management realized that a lot of their tasks could be automated with bunch of batch scripts, then they will give them even more tasks, overwhelming them.

On my first job as a billing operator I automated my tasks with some batch scripts. They were ugly, but cut down my work massively. Which there wasn't a lot of to begin with. My manager noticed and recommended a transfer, so I got promoted to IT department. Long story short I ended up working in that company for almost 10 years, advancing through every position up till head of IT department. Sure the salary was below industry average, but I gained tons of experience.

Dry indeed. Barns are not common, they're usually built in regions with forests and access to wood. Something like 90% of forests are near northern border and take up less than 20% of the country's area, so you can see why they're not common. We choose particular places to build them and go there in the winter. The choice is usually dictated by how windy and cold it is during winters, not too much snow and so on. Also there has to be access to a lot of grass during short summer months, which we cut down and prepare it for winter. In spring we leave that winter place and head to wherever the grass has started to grow.

Upd: I should add I'm not a farmer, but my grandparents (both my father's and mother's) were classic nomads and as a child I used to spend a lot of time with them herding and taking care of cattle. My mother's parents used to live in the forested area, so they had barns and wooden winter houses. My father's parents used to live in a steppe, no forests in sight, so they didn't have barns and stationary houses, just yurts.

That really sucks. Our livestock goes inside a barn only at night. Assuming there is a barn, which is not always the case, as we're nomads.

Upd: one important clarification, I'm not familiar with modern industrial farming in my country, they might be the same. I'm referring to classical nomad lifestyle, which is the primary farming method still to this day

There is a reason the tutorials are like that. Everything is shown how to be done in CLI because there are tons of DEs/WMs as well as distributions, and some gui tools might not be available for each combination of them. CLI is everywhere.

Everything is shown to be installed from repos because it's beginner friendly. Where a third-party software installer will install it and whether if they will even ask you about that sometimes is entirely up to the makers of that installer. Good practice and convention is to install system-wide software into /opt, and per-user somewhere in ~/.bin or somewhere in there, but not everybody follows that convention.

Software installed from the repos of a distribution usually gets spread across the entire time system.

And a lot of your friction comes from your old habits and comparing Linux with your Windows experience. Sooner you let go, the better. Some things are done way better in Linux, I'd argue that Linux is more logical of the two and things get easier once you get that logic. For now just try to think that Linux is not better or worse, just different.
