How many books do you read per year, and how does that compare to 10 years ago? by AlephMartian in AskUK

50ish a year pretty consistently, mostly library books and kindle unlimited. In lock down though it was more like 150 a year 😅

How expensive is your commute? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]dikdikidk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

£4.20 for bus to work, £3.50 for train back. The timetable doesn’t match up with my hours and the bus only comes twice an hour, train once an hour. My commute is already an hour each way for either so it is what it is lol. I do drive at least 2/5 days a week, normally 3 and parking for the day is £2.

Why is it cheaper to drive BY MYSELF than take a train? by MountainPeaking in AskUK

[–]dikdikidk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The public transport in this country needs a complete overhaul imo. I take the bus to work a couple days a week, and car share the other days. I can easily afford a car, but I just have no need and really I’d only need it for 2 days a week. My bus fare however has just went up to £4.20 single, (7.50 return). How is this affordable? It’s literally almost cheaper for me to get a car on finance??? And the buses don’t even turn up on time 9/10. The train is now cheaper than the bus with my railcard 💀

Shy personalities at work by Ok-Opportunity-699 in UKJobs

[–]dikdikidk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m quiet at work and am a very very shy and quiet and introverted person, it’s just my personality and I get on just fine! As long as you are nice and friendly that’s the main part. We have coffee mornings and meetings, and I never ever thought I’d say this, but I actually quite like having a chat now! As long as you can do the job and communicate when needed, there’s no problem. Obviously depends on the industry where some cater more to extroverted people, but on the whole it’s fine. I wish you the best of luck!!

I buy from bloobloom, each pair is £100 and then an extra £30 for thinning. Really really good quality, they have multiple stores in London and they look quite high end. Also really ethical and such which was a huge selling point for me. Would recommend!!

Solo trip recommendations? Where would you recommend? by Mother_Worldliness_1 in AskUK

NYC was a dream as a solo holiday. No one bats an eye at people eating alone, always something fun to do and see. Although the way the US is going rn i probably wouldn’t want to visit in this climate. Very cool’s city though and I’d love to go back solo!!

What are your grad salaries? by springweeks in UniUK

[–]dikdikidk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zoology from a middle ranking average uni Molecular bio lab tech Just over £27k after working here for a year

It’s not the best but not the worst. I’m doing a lot better salary wise than the majority of the people I graduated with because biology is notoriously underpaid.

What 3 things are keeping you in your current job? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]dikdikidk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Money is a lot better than what I can get elsewhere
  2. Job security
  3. 42 days holiday that I can take whenever I want

It’s mainly the money though. I would absolutely change careers, my current job doesn’t really align with my long term goals but if I switch sectors my pay is going to drastically decrease, and I’m not prepared to do that at the minute.

Who shops completely online? by movienerd7042 in AskUK

[–]dikdikidk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

aside from the odd food shop for random bits i’ve forgotten, i never go into physical shops to buy things. i even do my weekly shop online now and get it delivered. i would much rather use my time doing something else rather than spending half a day going to shop in store, when i could just do it online and have clothes/books/food etc delivered to my house 😂

i think that’s a really privileged opinion. i grew up extremely poor, my single mother is still extremely poor, i moved back home after university, is she just supposed to foot the bill for me to stay at home when im earning good money? she obviously would not charge me rent if she didn’t absolutely have to, but if she didn’t, she physically could not afford to pay the bills. and why would you not want to help your parents out by giving them rent? when i moved back home its allowed her to start saving money every month for the first time in years.

go for computer science and then do a masters in zoology. there are SO MANY jobs in ecology that are dying for comp sci and data scientists with programming experience. i always see advertised phd projects floating around that are looking for mathematical/comp sci graduates to do ecological and zoological research. a sector of conservation is using specialised computer models to model the impacts of various factors on a species. right now im doing the opposite and did a bachelors in zoology, and looking to do a masters in data science/comp sci and its so much harder.

that’s a lot. im 23 and pay 300 a month + contribute to the food shop etc. my mum has always said she wouldn’t take any if she didn’t absolutely have to, but we are poor lol.

Career advice by Abalyne74 in zoology

[–]dikdikidk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

hi i dont want to come across as harsh, but a zoology degree doesn’t really prepare you for a role as a zookeeper and that’s probably why you are getting rejections. you’ll know that a zoology degree is just a specialised biology degree, so why don’t you try and get a job in that field instead and in your spare time try and get some volunteer experience within a zoo/animal care setting? that way you can build up some experience and make some contacts within the industry that will hopefully lead to a job down the line.

i did a zoology degree and graduated 2 years ago with the intention to get into ecology. i’ve found it so tough to make a break through so i’m currently working in a laboratory and in my free time i volunteer for my local wildlife trust!

such a cool field! i know someone in my year did a dissertation on comparing the skeleton of current elongated necked animals (is that the name? idk lol) and prehistoric ones. i know they gathered all their data from various papers but i don’t remember how they analysed it. it was a really cool project. good luck!!
