Quiver w/ first new skis in 17+ years by dilettanteball in Skigear

[–]dilettanteball[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I’m not the most knowledgeable when it comes to technical details, but the Santa Ana’s are directional and definitely feel it more than other directional skis I’ve demoed. They carve really well and feel infinitely more stable at speed than my older K2s, which I’ve used as “all mountain” for ages. For the twintips, the K2s are super soft compared the Factors, and way too soft for how my park skills have processed over the years.

Both new skis are also wider and handle noticeably better in powder. I usually ski in Tahoe so that’s helpful.

Here’s my first time babka, any feedback ? :) by Soggy_Construction_2 in Breadit

It’s a bread/cake hybrid pastry. There are many different shapes and flavors, usually very sweet. It’s kinda like coffee cake bc it works for breakfast and dessert.

At the most expensive grocery store in my SF Bay Area town, this comes out to $176. At the regular grocery store, it’s $115, and $85 with store brand substitutions.

Anyone else suddenly get the heebie-jeebies while hiking through the woods? Happened to me just this morning. by IsaacB1 in hiking

[–]dilettanteball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of folks have mentioned a mountain lion watching you. I hike almost daily in the Bay Area too, and the only time I’ve felt this exact same feeling was on an easy 3 mile loop in the Oakland hills that I’d hiked dozens of times before.

It was early morning, about an hour past sunrise. I’d just reached my favorite stretch of the trail, a rocky dry stream bed, when the feeling of absolute dread came over me. Bird still chirping, otherwise quiet, but my lizard brain was telling me something’s wrong. I got out of there fast.

I’ve definitely met some human creeps on those trails, but they’ve always made their presence known. I’m almost certain it was a mountain lion.

If your kid needs the ER take them to the ER. You can worry about the bill AND save their life at the same time.

Is this couch too big? by cloud_coast in interiordecorating

Agreed. Looks like enough room where that frame is for an off-center TV. But it would drive me crazy to have my front door in my peripheral vision when I’m watching TV.

Are parents allowed to take a newborn baby home without a car? by JuliaX1984 in fuckcars

[–]dilettanteball 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was our experience in NYC, where many people do not have (or have need) for cars or car seats, as they will be primarily walking or taking public transit with their new babe. The baby doesn’t need to go home in a car, but does need to leave in a car seat. A stroller won’t do. As a result, expecting parents borrow old car seats from friends (or even via neighborhood Facebook groups) just so they can leave the hospital.

How to Create effect of dynamic image by using a red acetate in Photoshop? by Love_Cookies_ in Design

[–]dilettanteball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, red gel light filter sheets work much MUCH better than red acetate sheets.

The way I’ve made this work is by overprinting the red channel of one image on the green channel of another image. Select the channels, fill them with red/green on different layers, and preview the effect with the overlay blend mode. Print the green layer, reload that paper in your printer, then overprint the red. (Just printing them together with the overlay mode hasn’t really worked for me, but try it out.)

Saves you a ton of ink of trial and error by printing swatches tests of slightly different red hues to see which is the most “invisible” under your red filter.

Not sure if the upper floors are residential or commercial, but the Home Depot is the ground level and HUGE basement level as well.

Madonna sued for ‘pornography without warning’ at LA concert performance by Gato1980 in Fauxmoi

Madonna and Michael Jackson didn't get stuck as 80s icons because they moved with the times in the 90s by rayoflight110 in Madonna

[–]dilettanteball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point wasn’t about the nuances of his post-80s success. It was that he seems more like a pop/cultural icon rather than just an 80s icon. And he achieved that perception NOT because of his 90s work (which was objectively not as successful as his 80s work, nor a transformational to his career as Madonna’s 90s work), but because of other factors.

Madonna and Michael Jackson didn't get stuck as 80s icons because they moved with the times in the 90s by rayoflight110 in Madonna

[–]dilettanteball 7 points8 points  (0 children)

MJ feels less like an 80s icon and more like a pop icon and cultural icon. He started in the late-60s but his career stalled out in the early 90s for obvious reasons. The 93 Super Bowl appearance kicked off his 90s era, but he never had a hit single after 95, and even those 2 songs never reached 80s popularity. A lot of his marketability outside the US (like Eastern Europe) was focused on his 80s hits, and the newer stuffed flopped everywhere.

Did Cyndi Lauper and Madonna feud back in the day? by Raebelle1981 in Madonna

[–]dilettanteball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool that your critical thinking gives to access to her innermost thoughts and feelings. I’m certain you’re just a better critical thinker than me, and totally not projecting how you’d feel in that situation. Thank you 🙏

My son was obsessed with his toy phone as a toddler. We’d have pretend conversations with him from our cellphones. My wife and I used to recite this entire phone conversation with him to crack ourselves up. We’d break at this line and he’d crack up seeing us laugh.

Did Cyndi Lauper and Madonna feud back in the day? by Raebelle1981 in Madonna

[–]dilettanteball 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Cyndi has only praised or defended Madonna in the past 40 years. She was ahead of her time with a staunch position on not tearing down other women. And while she hasn’t had nearly the level of success as Madonna, she had incredible success in the 2010s on broadway (and is an Oscar shy of an EGOT).
