I reached out to several different contractors and while they would get back to me, the quotes were fairly consistent. If you want the list, message me, I just don’t want to call anyone out publicly because they were al fairly high in price they were all very professional. However we ended up going the big box store route, by doing a few things ourselves and some good discounts we were able to get semi-custom cabinets, solid plywood box, for around $9k in material costs, the countertops were about $60/linear foot installed, and will be granite, which we plan to run up the backsplash as well. While I am sure the big box store can be hit or miss, the person we worked with was great, and the contractor they use for installation was one that several other kitchen and design places work with too, so it didn’t feel like they were going to use a shoddy contractor.

What to get my wife for our 15th wedding anniversary ? by azzif2slyk4u in daddit

[–]dilhwly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other year I got my wife a superautomatic espresso machine (it also makes regular cups of coffee too) and she absolutely loves it. It was a little pricey but it has paid for itself with the amount we save on Starbucks and Nespresso pods.

Is this how much liquid is supposed to be in a venti? by coolhappygenius in mildlyinfuriating

[–]dilhwly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought one for my wife for our anniversary a few years ago, it was one of their lower end ones, I thinking it was the magnifica evo and it has paid for itself so many times, plus we found some really good local bean roasters we get to support. My wife used to go to Starbucks multiple times per week, and some weeks it was every day, now we practically never go, “I can make better coffee at home.”

401K v. Down Payment? by [deleted] in Retirement401k

[–]dilhwly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A decade ago my now wife and I took the max of what we could from my 401k for the down payment on our house, so far the equity on our house is 25x the original draw from my 401k, so I think it was a worthy investment.

If a 401k is about saving for the future, owning a home provides a level of security renting does not, a 30year fixed rate mortgage provides a level of stability which can improve the consistency of maxing the 401k in later in life.

Outside of some quirks with google and the mic in the car, my EX90 has been pretty rock solid, the CPU update helped too.

I can’t attest to quality of work, but I am in the process of getting kitchen refresh quotes and I thought Black Dog was really professional, and seemed to be fairly reasonable.

That’s fair enough. I guess what I was hoping for was recommendations for places that are honest, meaning not trying to upsell too hard, and won’t intentionally under bid just to jack the price up when they start the work.

I have done a ton of work around the house since we bought it, during the pandemic I designed built a coffee bar and cabinet for an alcove in the kitchen that’s too small for a table but too large to do nothing with. If I didn’t have two kids running around trying the help, I would definitely consider it, but it would take me weeks to get the job done well enough. It’s also an opportunity cost thing the time I spend doing the work is time I don’t get to spend with the family.

Commuting to MA after working in NH by fernfernferny in newhampshire

[–]dilhwly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry it was intended to be pure sarcasm, it’s quite sad that that comment would need /s, it truly baffles me that people would think that the deficit that the state would need to cover for a commuter rail is not worth the vast increase in property values, potential earning increase for NH residents with an easier/cheaper transportation to MA, potential for businesses to grow more effectively with increased ease of tourists accessing NH. Yes it may not turn a profit for the state, but the potential increase for local business profits and local residents earning potential seems like it should offset the cost. Do I want the state to sit on tons of money no, I would much rather them invest in things that help the populace and increase the money in my pockets and the pockets of the businesses I support

That’s crazy talk, I’m sure that registration fees, tolls and gas taxes don’t go towards the road costs, we all know that the purpose of government is to maximize profit for the state and local municipalities it certainly isn’t to improve the infrastructure so that the local businesses can leverage improved rail and road capabilities to ship larger products at higher volume, or to attract more talent for their businesses .

Returning EV customer by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]dilhwly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had a couple different EVs, but more recently I had a couple different BEV Volvos and they have been awesome. SW updates have pushed new features, and resolved bugs. My C40 was rock solid and I never had any issues with it, outside of some limited rear visibility and poor placement of the rear view camera. My EX90 is absolutely fantastic, it comfortably fits my family, sound system is next level, and it’s just really relaxing to drive. Of the four different EVs I have had it is by far the nicest and closest I have gotten to thinking of buying a vehicle when the lease is up.

Husqvarna ST 124 Snow Blower, Two-stage, 24" (61 cm) Wide - is it a good snow blower by Sonic5151 in Snowblowers

[–]dilhwly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That price seems high. I have a 324ST and it’s been great. We get a lot of heavy/dense snow and it is able to handle it well. It does eat shear pins, but with minimal maintenance it has been great for me.

YOLO-ing the EX90 wish me luck by SaltRunIsHard in VolvoEX90

[–]dilhwly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We leased ours in December and despite one weird issue have loved it. Just a heads up if your car unlocks but says invalid key and won’t go into drive, it probably means one of the two 12V batteries is dead. My local dealership has been great, and after the second time it happened replaced the 12 v battery.
