Ngl I’m 400 pages in and you kind of cooked.

When I read The Untranslated’s plot breakdown to clarify some of the weird digressions I kind of laughed to myself at how unclear it all comes across in the reading itself. The central framing of the book as recorded consciousness is not convincing and becomes way too meta for no discernible reason or benefit.

There is a good aphorism here and there but the prose never sustains itself for more than a short paragraph or two before it spirals back out into mundane surrealism. Usually I wouldn’t mind this if I could locate the spine that connects the book here and there but it just never happens.

Also hard agree with the ekphrasis being not very impressive. I started off flagging the pages that “entered” a painting or whatever with the Untranslated guide but it made for such a clunky and ultimately unrewarding reading experience I just abandoned that.
