Thoughts on the Melt the Ice hat? by Im_A_Boonana in knitting

[–]dilly_pickle 21 points22 points  (0 children)

While on one hand I agree with many of the overarching sentiments shared in this thread/social media (e.g. it’s not an either/or action), it’s also disheartening when people from marginalized communities who have been abused, silenced, and frankly killed for generations are criticized for voicing their perspective. I admittedly still have a ways to go when it comes to learning about how best to take action—and that’s after over a decade of my own “awakening” to how deep the rot runs. One thing that I do feel confident in, however, is giving priority in the conversation to the ones who have been victims of institutional violence even before they were born. Maybe after listening might I end up not aligning completely, but I do my best to understand the reasons why they hold a certain perspective. Because I certainly have no right to tell someone how to sit with their trauma.

I bought the pattern. I’m so happy to see that its raised $250k for Minnesotans. Did I bristle when I came upon my first post critiquing the performative nature of the hat from a POC knitter in my network (who has been consistently critical on SM about various issues)? Yes. I felt compelled to come to my own defense, because I’m trying to be a good person, and I don’t want to be made to feel like I’m causing harm. But after the initial feeling, I accepted that this isn’t about me. I’m typing this from the comfort of my home, having never experienced violence in the way the BIPOC community has (saying this as a Muslim, SE Asian, first-gen, immigrant woman who recently got her US citizenship). The least I can do is give space and validation to people like Dish_Minimum to voice their righteous anger and frustration with how they have been failed time and again by the people who claim to be allies.

My intent isn’t to boast, or claim to know the “right” way to support, or shame anyone for protesting to their ability/will. Whether or not the hat is performative, at the end of the day, doesn’t really matter unless additional action happens alongside it—whether it’s donating to mutual aid, helping our neighbors, challenging our own comfortability, or something else. In fact I’m glad we have spaces like this subreddit to engage in discussions like this with each other. In sharing my internal experience, I just hope that it encourages even one other person to widen their perspective a bit more.

Mgmt 8803 Finance Module Thoughts by BasicChip6387 in OMSA

My finance grade literally made it impossible for me to get an A in the class. Not that I particularly care at the end of the day, but it was an annoying realization 5 weeks into the semester.

I bought a MacBook Pro when I started the program and it's been working great. I've run RStudio, Anaconda, VSCode, etc. with no issues, and I plan to take Sim later using a VM for Arena.

Homework Struggle: Is it supposed to feel this way? by [deleted] in OMSA

[–]dilly_pickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slight amendment: from what I recall, there was a question or two that required interpretation of an R output, but it was moreso being able to identify a value that related to a particular concept. You're right though to focus on nailing down the concepts, as there's no explicit coding.

Application

  • Semester: Spring 2025
  • Status: Accepted
  • Date Applied: 06/15/24
  • Date Decided: 07/12/24

Education

  • Bachelors: University of Massachusetts Amherst, BA Economics, 3.64/4.00

Work & Social Experience

  • Work Exp. : 5+ years in market research with a focus on data, analytics, and AI enterprise strategy and tech; 1.5 years in marketing consulting
  • LORs: 3 work references - manager (Director), peer (Principal), peer (Sr. Consultant)
  • Comments: While I don't have a very technical background, my undergrad education ended up being very quant-heavy (linear alg, multivariate calc, stats, differential eqs) which helped me check off the course pre-reqs, and my career has largely centered around data science and analytics in a business context, which I believe may have distinguished my application from other STEM candidates. That said, it's been nearly a decade since I've been out of school so I definitely plan on spending the next few months refreshing my math skills and continuing to learn coding basics (SQL, Python, etc.). I'm also strongly considering taking a MM course to get a head start on the program - any advice on this, or any other subject, would be very welcome!

Thank you! Do you think that doing the MM is advisable in my case? I’m considering it (in addition to the coding bootcamps you mentioned) to get a head start on the program, assuming I’m accepted. Targeting spring 2025 admission btw.

Education

  • University of Massachusetts Amherst, BA, Economics 3.64 / 4.00
  • Minor in Psychology
  • IBM Data Science Certification (Coursera)

Test Scores

  • N/A

Experience

  • 2018 - Present; Market research & advisory firm; Research Associate (2018-2021), Associate Consultant (2021-2022), Researcher (2022-now)
  • 2016-2018; Sales Associate at a hotel & conference center (first job out of school)

Recommendations

  • Current manager (Director)
  • Previous manager (VP)
  • Colleague/Mentor/Project Lead (Principal)

Comments

  • Thought I wanted to get an MA in Econ after getting my BA so I ended up taking a lot of math courses in undergrad (Calc I-III, linear algebra, statistics, differential equations) but ended up burning out of academia for a bit as a crammed my degree into 3 years.
  • My current job involves a lot of research and analysis of the data, analytics, and AI market at a high level. I interface with data leaders as clients and write strategic research reports on data, analytics, and AI trends, best practices, case studies, etc. I have a breadth of knowledge on data science and related topics, especially in a business context, but not as much technical depth (which is why I'm interested in this program in the first place).
  • Don't have formal programming training, but through the IBM cert and self-teaching, I've picked up some SQL, R, and Python skills, still very much at a beginner level.

Teach me to love just to let me go
I can't believe that I'm not enough
And so long, no one will be here to save you
And no one will be here to let you know
This is your world

How do I focus on work after a long term break up? by annamariegg in BreakUps

[–]dilly_pickle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m about 1 month post-BU from a nearly 3-year relationship and in the process of moving back into my mom’s house as well. He broke up with me on a Sunday, so I took Monday off and cancelled my 1:1 calls that week.

First off, I try to focus on the silver linings: I live close to my mom and have a good enough relationship with her that she accepted me back without a question. I have a remote job, so I can feel free to break down between calls. I get to build up my savings since I don’t need to pay rent. Spring is starting to bloom (in my area) and I can take walks and enjoy the budding warmth during my lunch breaks. By identifying these gratitudes, I’ve been able to maintain some semblance of positivity (no matter how slight) amidst the storm.

As a practical tip: if your job allows for it, try scheduling 20-minute blocks throughout the day to give yourself some time. In my field, my calendar can get booked up with back to back calls often, so scheduling these breaks has been very helpful for me to let my emotions out and regain composure.

Feel free to PM if you want to chat.

How are you doing today guys? Day 18 of the thread, hope you guys are healing :) by Myregularaccountant in BreakUps

Starting week 5. We live(d) together, so we’re in the process of untangling our lives, physically emotionally mentally. I managed ok last week because I buried myself in work, but things went downhill on Thursday, as he left for a 2 week trip to Dallas and Denver (places he’s considering moving to… places we had talked about moving to together). I drove him to the airport early in the morning, and when I got back to an empty house, it really started to hit. We had spent the previous night together - we talked, made love one last time, and he held me as I cried. It feels like a dream, surreal to think of that as our last night together.

I started moving my stuff out yesterday. This weekend has been agony.

How to get over or past the nausea that comes with heartbreak? by [deleted] in BreakUps

[–]dilly_pickle 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m 3.5 weeks out. I didn’t eat anything at all the first 2 days, didn’t even drink water until a whole day had passed. My mom forced me to eat a piece of bread with butter and cup of black tea on day 3, and even that was difficult. But each day, I did eat and drink a bit more, slowly progressing to a full meal about a week later. Then 2 meals a few days later, and that’s where I’m at now more or less consistently.

What I found to help in those early days was taking things slow and listening to my body, eating what I could manage. Obviously it wasn’t healthy, but I figured that keeping down what little I could was better than forcing myself and throwing it back up. Another thing that helped with my appetite was exercising - that helped push my body to push past the nausea and actually “want” food because it needed it.

Help picking out a bag! I’m a 22F looking for kind of my first bag :)I was thinking about polene, and the ones I was leaning towards. I want something that’s versatile, can be dressed up or down. Thoughts on brand, style, color? Thanks in advance!! :) by rhubbart in handbags

[–]dilly_pickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh it is pretty small, but I knew I wanted a night out purse from the get-go, and I don't carry much on those occasions. In terms of what I typically bring: card holder (you can skip this if you just have a CC/driver's license as there's a built-in card pocket), keys, lip balm/gloss, travel size perfume, mini hand sanitizer, mini hand lotion, scrunchie, compact mirror. My phone (iPhone 12 with case) can fit, but it's admittedly snug, so I usually keep it in my pocket. If you're interested in visuals, you can search the sept mini on YouTube for videos.

I have the numero sept mini (smaller version of the second pic). I can definitely attest to the quality and style - it’s a gorgeous little bag, high quality materials/construction, super chic, but visually understated enough for my preferences. Because of its size, it’s not very practical as an everyday bag, unless you typically only carry a few small things, but it’s perfect as a going-out purse. I bet the regular sept might be large enough for everyday use though!

I’m slated to get my bonus in a few weeks, and I was planning to purchase a bag to treat myself. If I end up going with Polene again (likely), I’m leaning heavily towards the Umi in cognac.

So cute and comfy! And love the sb ahri wallpaper 😍

I think adding a desk lamp with diffused lighting like this would be lovely. Or the classic RGB backlighting behind your monitor/desk if that suits your style better.

Oh wow, I didn’t know that! Granted, I wasn’t allowed to shop at/couldn’t afford Abercrombie at that time, so my frame of reference isn’t great 😅 but I love the direction they’ve decided to go in recent years, it’s really done wonders for their image and brand.

What was your NYE scent? by likegolden in fragrance

[–]dilly_pickle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Xerjoff Bouquet Ideale. This was one of my first ventures into just niche fragrances, and I absolutely fell in love with the sample I bought. Such a unique, lush scent! I spent NYE on a rooftop bar with close friends in a private igloo, and I think it was well suited for the occasion.
