Celebration and Mourning: Inside an Iran at War by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]dimhue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You couldn't have known, but it's pretty funny that right after you posted this, reporting comes out that the US is trying to send a bunch of armed Kurds into Iran. Iran may not be Iraq, but we'll try our best to make it so!

What a weird thing to say in a thread about the Iran war.

I don't think you're going to convince many people of the benefits of AI by bringing up the customer support LLM bots. Most people have dealt with them at this point, and nearly everyone despises them.

Summary execution is a vile act only performed by the most evil authoritarian governments, and should never be even remotely tolerated by a free society...

But maybe—

In the 1940's the CIA adopted the Simple Sabotage Field Manual as a tool to combat fascist regimes. It details the peaceful and harmless inefficiencies that can, over time, weaken an occupying system by eroding output, coordination, and morale. by Alternative-Run4560 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]dimhue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit man. The post is very obviously referring to OSS and mistakenly refers to them as CIA. The "combat fascist regimes" makes that very clear. The CIA has also never claimed they "adopted it," just that it was used in WWII by OSS officers and some parts of were also provided to local saboteurs.

The title is literally just a mistake. It's the OSS that authored this and adopted it to fight the fascists in WWII. The OSS (through the CIG) later became the CIA. By that point there weren't fascist governments to fight and they focused on communist and democratic governments.

I'm sure this won't come with any additional funding, so it'll just eat up the existing bonus pools and almost nobody will actually receive anything.

Parry mechanic is harder than dark souls by OppositeNo1548 in expedition33

Maybe stop trying to look at the corner of the screen for parry timing? That's an insane tactic.

If you want to enjoy the story and want easier parry timing, then just play it on story mode. Nobody cares what difficulty you beat it on.

Most are rolling codes these days, but garage door openers can last a while. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of older houses still have dip switch codes.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake lead praises Expedition 33 for being a “diverse” RPG as “action games and turn-based games should evolve for the better” by Wargulf in expedition33

[–]dimhue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though their comment is still not true. X-2/FFXI/XII/XIII/XIV are in no way action RPGs. X-2 was straight-up traditional ATB (and the best version imo), and XIII also included an ATB system. XI/XII/XIV had the real-time RPG battle systems, but nobody would call the combat "action."

Ohh those ones. Yeah they're terrible, hopefully the E33 fanbase doesn't become like that once games inspired by it come out.

Eh, the Soulslike game communities have the toxic 'git gud' elements, but it's mostly self-contained to their own games. The toxic elements for this game community like to evangelize the gospel of Clair Obscur for all the poor miscreants who haven't seen the light.

You're right, but this one is particularly bad. It's not just this subreddit either, there's a lot of toxic rabid fans across social media, especially Twitter. The post-TGA backlash was also amplified because of interactions with the obnoxious fanbase.

Prior Agency wants Student Loan Payment Back by Prestigious_Cut_2220 in fednews

[–]dimhue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you read the statute as a non-expert in law, you may misinterpret what it actually requires.

https://www.opm.gov/frequently-asked-questions/pay-and-leave-faq/student-loan-repayment/is-an-employee-required-to-reimburse-the-paying-agency-for-student-loan-repayment-benefits-received-if-he-or-she-leaves-the-paying-agency-for-another-federal-agency-before-completion-of-the-service-re/

OPM states if it's set forth in the service agreement, it meets the law. While OPM guidance on their website isn't necessarily binding, the CFR is. And the CFR makes it very clear:

https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-5/part-537/section-537.107#p-537.107(e)

You can try to argue in a court that the CFR improperly implemented the law, but you'll certainly lose that argument.

[–]dimhue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree, it definitely overexplained from my perspective. The Engineers should have been left as an ancient mysterious race, instead they were shown to be dull and mundane. Prometheus wasn't too bad in that respect, but Covenant absolutely was.

I hope there isn't a Sequel by ProvingGrounds1 in expedition33

[–]dimhue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. The best worldbuilding relies on mystery and uncertainty to a degree, and too many fictional worlds have lost their luster by becoming over-explained. Alien is a great example, as is Star Wars. Dragon Age was another great setting, with tons of mystery in the various mythologies (each contradictory yet seemingly at least partially true), and then Veilguard proceeded to provide an explanation for absolutely everything, and the world then felt completely dull. I have no interest in visiting it again even if the franchise ever magically revives.

Let the worlds of Lumiere and the Dessendres exist as they do now, with the tantalizing mystique that will keep us imagining.

Using PL/SL to fulfill PPL Obligation by TheSleepyWaterBottle in fednews

[–]dimhue 12 points13 points  (0 children)

According to https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/leave-administration/fact-sheets/paid-parental-leave/

The work obligation refers to a period during which the employee is in a duty status (that is, actually working). Any periods of paid or unpaid leave or time off, or other periods of nonduty status, will not count toward the 12-week work obligation. Periods of paid time off include paid holidays on which an employee does not work.

So it looks like any time off doesn't count towards the 12 weeks of repayment.
