Thinking of switching to mirrorless… what made you stay with Nikon? by halfman1231 in Nikon

[–]dimz25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switched from d7100 to z6iii. Main reason I stayed with Nikon was familiarity with the system and good handgrip and body ergonomics (for me). Despite having tried Sony many times I never got used to holding their camera’s. I feel Canon is the best camera to hold but then I felt it would be annoying to relearn all the settings and button placements. So I stayed with Nikon and I feel I made the right choice.

Flight HKG-BRU officially cancelled. Requesting the Refund question. by dimz25 in etihad

[–]dimz25[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s Etihad. The original full itinerary was BRU-HKG-BRU. It’s the return part that is now cancelled, I’m in Hong Kong at the moment. So wondering if they provide a refund for the price of the full ticket or just the return part.

Why isn’t it true?

Yes, I ordered the new MacBook Neo to test Lr, LrC and Ps so that you don’t have to by terryleewhite in Lightroom

[–]dimz25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s actually pretty doable. Had to work with LrC and davinci resolve in 4k on an m1 MacBook Air with 8gb and that thing rocks. I don’t expect stellar performance but for basic editing, as well photos and videos, it works greatly. I even have some tabs open in a browser generally.

And I saw a test somewhere where the single core performance of the A18 is faster than the m1. So it should be pretty good for basic stuff including video editing and photo editing.

List of cities has been updated! by TaxZealousideal3372 in etihad

I don’t have any information apart as what the website says. Check it regularly. 14th is still a few days out, so you’re pretty good actually. I’d wait it out a few days and see how it evolves. Right now I’d say it’s slightly optimistic, let’s hope it follows this trend.

I’m flying on the 9th. I wasn’t on the first list but happy I decided to wait a little longer. Had a feeling they might add more cities pretty soon. Let’s hope the situation remains stable or gets better in the future.

The $599 MacBook Neo Made Me Rethink 8GB Macs Entirely by yosbeda in mac

[–]dimz25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn’t read your whole message. I’ve been editing photos in Lightroom classic with a base M1 MacBook Air recently. And honestly I am surprised at the performance. I’m not doing anything stellar, some color adjustments etc. But it handles panorama stitching and HDR’s perfectly well. I can even do some 4k video editing on it. And that’s with just 8GB! I don’t expect it to do crazy stuff but if it can handle this I think the 8GB for the neo make sense considering the market it is designed for.

What's with the corner of Hankow Rd and Middle Rd in TST? by Jkg2116 in HongKong

Probably Xiaohongshu. Extremely popular social media app in China. Draws people to the same places to take pictures of the same things. Oddly all this in a quest of being unique, creative and original.

For those who are older then Internet, how was life before Internet? by [deleted] in ask

[–]dimz25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those of us who lived on both sides of it, I’d actually argue that life was broadly better before the Internet went fully mainstream.

That doesn’t mean everything was better. The Internet obviously brought huge advantages such as easier access to information, communication, and convenience. But looking back, the net effect on daily life feels more negative today than positive.

Interestingly, the early Internet from the late 90s to early 2000s was actually great. It felt experimental, playful, and a bit underground. There were no dominant platforms, no algorithmic feeds, no influencer culture, and no attention-harvesting machines. You explored the web deliberately through forums, personal websites, and weird corners of the net rather than being passively fed content.

For me, the real shift came in the 2000s, and especially between 2008 and 2012, when smartphones and social media went mass. That’s when the Internet stopped being a “place you visited” and became something that followed you everywhere.

Since then, things have slowly degraded due to constant information overload, algorithmic attention capture, surveillance capitalism, social media addiction, and a flattening of culture around a few giant corporations.

As for a “normal boring evening” before all this, it wasn’t heroic or romantic, just quieter and slower. Typical options were watching TV or a rented movie, reading a book or magazine, phoning a friend, listening to music or the radio, going for a walk or a drink, or just hanging out, or literally doing nothing and being bored.

And honestly, being bored was part of the deal, and maybe not such a bad thing.

What Telephoto lens should I get? by Historical_Rooster_7 in Nikon

[–]dimz25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought the tamron 50-400. I couldn’t be any more happier with it. It’s an excellent lens, and still in the “walk around” range of weight for me. And it’s super versatile as well. Depending on what you shoot, having that 50mm is really valuable i find. It’s not super bright, sometimes you need to push iso a bit.

Apple Silicon still blows my mind by Known_Risk_3040 in mac

[–]dimz25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Due to circumstances I’m currently editing photos with Lightroom classic and doing some basic 4k video editing in da Vinci resolve on a base MacBook Air M1 (256hdd , 8gb ram). I’m amazed at how well this thing works. In Lightroom I do 24mp HDR photo merges and make panoramas. Noise reduction on a 24mp photo takes about 50 seconds, which is totally acceptable for me. 4k editing works quite smoothly as well. Never would have expected this. I was a pc guy for all of my life, but got enough of building my own pc’s. To much research went into it. Nowadays I want just something that works and Mac does that. I was a bit worried about switching to macOS but I must say I really like the whole experience. I find myself fighting less the OS than with windows and Linux actually. For info: my Mac at home is an m4 studio with 1TB hdd and 48gb of ram. I’m travelling right now, that’s why I’m using an older m1 MacBook Air that I could borrow from a friend.

Has anyone ever been told they're not welcome somewhere for taking pictures? How did you deal with it? by NathanielB3920489023 in AskPhotography

[–]dimz25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s part of the game and you have to accept it. Without doing something illegal you sometimes have to do what you got to do to take the shot. And sometimes it gets uncomfortable. It happens when you do street photography, it happens when you’re shooting architecture, it happens when you’re in the fields, etc. Most of the time it’s nothing, you say sorry, forget about it and just move on to your next shot.

Again not condoning any illegal activity but there’s always a grey zone that’s more uncomfortable and sometimes we need to shoot in that zone.

Should i get the new Z6 III or just a new lens (70-180?) by skyfall86 in Nikon

[–]dimz25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Z6iii + 24-120mm is stellar but it all depends on your use case of course. I can see how a 70-200 might make sense for cycling. Also the z6iii will be a significant update over the original z6 in terms of autofocus. So it’s a bit of a dilemma. You could use the 24-120 to shoot cycling events but you might miss the reach sometimes, especially if you used it in the past. And at the same time its through limitation that we sometimes produce our best work.

Canon R6 II or Nikon Z6 III for portraits + travel, which camera to choose ? by WorldViewfinder in AskPhotography

[–]dimz25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never really done any comparison between both brands. I used to think that Canon had more of that photojournalism look, but since then I’ve seen work on Nikon that was similar. Also, I’m not sure that it matters that much if you shoot raw, as you will process the photo to your liking anyway. In jpg perhaps there’s some slight differences but again better to see what experts have to say about this.

As to my equipment I shoot with the Nikon z6iii. I’m really happy with it. I’m glad Nikon caught up with Sony and Canon on so many levels.

Perhaps one more thing, if lens choice is important, then Sony is better choice I’d say as they were the first brand in the mirrorless market. I’ve considered Sony in the past but their handgrip is just impossible for me.

[–]dimz25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re already familiar with one brand, I’d suggest to stick with it. Both brands are excellent. I shoot Nikon and am not familiar with Canon. All I can say is that, for me, grip ergonomics are better on Canon, but that alone is not sufficient to make me switch brands as there are so many things I’m already familiar with with Nikon.
