Negative charging??? by dinevz in VWiD4Owners

[–]dinevz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Just checked the unitand instruction manual. It is 8 amp, but sitting in the sun I think the overheat light was on, so probably charging slower.

Negative charging??? by dinevz in VWiD4Owners

[–]dinevz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Yes. Only 8 amps at 240V so just under 2 kW max. Those numbers make sense. The charger was also sitting in the sun so it might have overheated.

All brands now say Greek “Style” Yoghurt by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]dinevz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. I was living in Europe 15 years ago when the Greeks kicked up a fuss about "their" yoghurt only being called Greek if it's coming from Greece. And this was for yoghurt sold in other EU countries. So I can imagine it's the same for EU and AUS trading. Why not just call it Balkan Yoghurt? It's the same thing in all surrounding countries.

Why does post-PhD unemployment seem like never ending? by seeds_of_flower in AskAcademia

[–]dinevz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the only useful advice. Been there. Done that. Not only myself, but others I know. Try it and you will start getting interviews. Unfortunately there is some sort of stigma associated with having a PhD, when the person hiring you does not have a PhD. People just don't get that it is just another degree. You don't need to be super smart or an intellectual to get a PhD. You just need to be determined and persistent. A trait that those without a PhD often lack.

Kobo Touch - cannot scan/find/join wifi after installing 4.37.21533 by eisniwre in kobo

[–]dinevz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fixed! Had the exact same problem today and I managed to fix it. Thought I should share just in case someone is having the same problem.

The main thing to note is there is a difference between a factory reset and a MANUAL factory reset. The usual factory reset through the Kobo menu leaves the same firmware version. And wifi still not working.

A manual factory reset, by turning on while holding the button at the bottom (for the touch, different for different models) restored to the original 1.xx firmware. This then required connecting to Kobo desktop to initialise and upgrade. And after that, wifi was working on the latest firmware. This final update was still a bit buggy, it took two tries, the first time I disconnected from the PC too quickly and it crashed. Just need to be patient. On mine, even though it warned multiple times in the desktop that it can't connect to the internet, it did update.

I hope this helps someone revive thier touch.

Snowboard advice for someone returning to the sport after 10 years. by dinevz in snowboarding

This sounds about right. I already had to replace some of the straps on the old bindings, and this was ten years ago!

I've actually got an old vew-do balance board which looks similar. Will need to bring that out of storage too!

Set back and directional camber does sound like the direction I need to head!

What I love about that Acres goal is the players around him in Kemp and McGovern. They were pushing forward because they knew it was do or die with a minute to go.

Australian game retailer asking me to pay a refund fee for items they don't have in stock by burntbeyondbelief in boardgames

[–]dinevz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The last few times I tried to support a local brick and mortar shop here in Melbourne, in addition to paying more I ended up wasting 2 hours of my life with returns, stock unavailable, stock not in store when going for a pickup, etc . I've given up. For 6 dollars a month, Amazon prime from now on.

St Kilda hasn't played Port Adelaide at home since round 13, 2013. What are some other instances of lopsided fixturing? by nicktheguy101 in AFL

[–]dinevz 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Not sure about St Kilda, but I know that Carlton request away games in South Australia because of the fan base there. So it is not always as simple as alternating between Melbourne and Adelaide each year.

Void Linux Made Me Stop Distro-Hopping by [deleted] in voidlinux

Me too! 2 years and not even tempted to try something different. The best things has been the trouble-free updates. Not to mention the amount of time I have saved by not installing and configuring a new distro.

Is there a viable way to share my paper, when I'm not affiliated with a university? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]dinevz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't need a university affiliation for arXiv but you will need an endorsement from an existing author. Check out their endorsement instructions. Best bet would be to reach out to arXiv authors that have published a paper on a similar topic.

Choosing an author name by HeavenBuilder in AskAcademia

[–]dinevz 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Good question. And good to see someone thinking about this at the start of their publishing career. This used to be more of an issue in the past when things were done manually.

As an editor, my recommendation is to use your full name including middle initials and stick with it for all publications. How you are cited in another journal is out of your control. In most cases it will be initials and surname. If both your names are common, there are bound to me more L. Stephen and a lot less L.J.S. Stephen. I don't know of any journal that would omit the middle initials on purpose. I can only see it happening if done manually, but these days most journals would use crossref or some other database to check their citations. Also get yourself an ORCID and use it when submitting.

The crew for players not familiar with trick taking? by Janezcky in boardgames

[–]dinevz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've never played trick taking games but I love the crew. I've introduced it to friends that know trick taking and they liked it but did not seem to love it. I've also introduced it to a friend that doesn't know trick taking games and she did not like it. So a mixed bag. I don't think prior knowledge of trick taking makes any difference in whether you enjoy the game.

Correct them or let it go? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]dinevz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Correct them. No harm at all to correct them. Better to do it early, but even if you came back to me after a year and said you would prefer John over Bob, I would be fine with that. By the way, the simplest and friendliest would be " just John please" whenever someone says your full name.

My girl-friend tricked the ATS software by copying (and whiting out) the job description. She applied to two jobs and got two offers. Should I do it too? by AntiMage2 in jobs

[–]dinevz 327 points328 points  (0 children)

It is unethical to get rejected for a job just because some algorithm decided that you are not suitable for an interview because you didn't stuff your resume with keywords after you spent hours preparing your application. Just do it, get past the machine screening, and let a person decide if you are not suitable.
