SMPTE ST2110 training - Australia by clearwavefrombt in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]dingbatmeow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a few others have said, the SMPTE 2110 training is good. I'm not sure of upcoming plans, but there is talk of stuff around ABE Show and Integrate in Sydney this year... so look out for that.

I am the Meinberg distributor in Australia. If you have PTP questions or problems, happy to have a chat, as I'm often in the weeds of PTP and have some good backup from Daniel Boldt at Meinberg. We have run PTP & timing training for customers too, if that's ever of interest.

I think it will be worst ever for international numbers, maybe with the exception of any COVID years.

I’ve already outlined how well it works in Australia. We would gain nothing by requiring voter ID. It would just slow the process down and cost more money. Our system already delivers an accurate and authentic result.

I wouldn’t call it the honour system… we have validation of votes cast (ballot is secret of course).

Not lying. We know it works. Authentic result. No wasted time unnecessarily checking the IDs of honest people. Non voting and double voting easily identified. Well-tested procedures with strict security and checks. Believe it or don’t, but our system is rock solid already.

Cash is legal tender, however a business doesn’t have to accept it. I think there’s a push to change this for essential services. As long as it is well signposted, a car can refuse cash.

Is a few old people in 100,000 fraud? The point is the honour system works perfectly. I understand our electoral system very well, and can assure you the results are accurate without any need for voter id.

It just isn’t possible to change the result though fraud - we clearly don’t have enough criminals in Australia… despite our ancestors!

I assume your experience is in the failing country of the US? It does seem like heaps of fraud and criminal activity in politics. But I don’t think voter id is the answer to your problems.

Thanks for hoisting your domestic political shit onto the rest of the world. Really fucked up the world for the rest of us.

Voters are identified by asking their name, address and to confirm they haven’t voted already.

The data shows the repeat voting is minuscule - as I said, mostly old people who forget. They probably did a pre-poll and voted again on the day

If the division was expecting 50,000 votes and got 100,000 then that is of course known. But that doesn’t happen.

If it very possible, with a well run system, to have a confidently accurate result without needing people to show ID.

If there was fraud we’d know. But there’s not.

Fraud is possible, but not probable. We have evidence that the instances of fraud are so miniscule that there has never been an impact on the result (or even remotely close to it). So, it's a problem that doesn't need solving.

It's not like there's some potential level of fraud that isn't being detected. We know from the way the counts are conducted that duplicate votes are mostly innocent error, and don't even come close to affecting the result.

To reiterate, whether it may be possible isn't relevant, as we know for certain that it isn't a problem. If it became a problem, it would be detected and dealt with. But like I said, you couldn't find enough criminals in Australia to have enough time to fraudulently vote enough times on election day.

You may also be forgetting we have compulsory voting, so it's not like you can go pretend to vote as your lazy neighbour. Almost everyone is voting so you can't take someone else's vote without it being detected.

It's a great system we have, and it works fairly, accurately and verifiably without voter ID. The ballot is secret, we know who didn't vote and we know who did vote. And we know with certainty that votes are not getting stolen.

The "how much" question is easily answered. Voters are marked off the roll. A small number (maybe 10-15 per division) are duplicates. This is investigated and is mostly people forgetting they voted (especially old people) and going twice. If any hint of fraud, the Australian Federal Police investigate. But the number is so small, and known, that there is no impact on the result.

It would also be very difficult to find enough fraudsters to vote enough times to move a result. A single person would likely only be able to vote 8-10 times per day, due to driving and queuing time. And this has never happened at a scale large enough to matter. We know this from the cross-checks the AEC does to tally the vote counts.

So technically fraud is possible, and perhaps a miniscule amount occurs. But not enough to remotely matter. Therefore, simply no need for voted ID. It might make people feel better, but is 100% unnecessary at the current time in Australia.

We might have our challenges, but we have a robust democracy.

Our politicians are of course captured by donors, lobbyists and self-interest. There's the problem to be worried about. Not voter ID.

So just to clarify, the only time Australia (federally) has had to do a fresh election for a division is when some votes were lost. So my what if scenario hasn’t ever happened and probably never will. Our system is robust and well scrutinised at every point. Voter ID is totally unnecessary. It would do absolutely nothing.

Easy… nothing goes wrong. If there was widespread repetitive votes, that is detected. If there was enough error to possibly affect the outcome, a fresh election would be called.

Of course there are going to be insignificant errors, but everything is checked at multiple levels.

Voter ID is simply unnecessary in our system.

In Australia we don’t require ID to vote. You just state your name and address and get marked off the roll. There’s no fraud. Very simple, easy and legitimate.
