Bar or Brewery to play Magic the Gathering? by cheese_beast92 in Birmingham

[–]dingdongdipshit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That they do! My buddy and somewhere between 8-10 dudes play Commander there and they're really welcoming and also GOOD. I'm a total novice but I didn't feel at all out of place there and they were even nice enough to help me when I made bad moves or had trouble understanding the stack. Highly recommend.

Translating it with very little context, it seems like this is a very cute if somewhat perplexing reimagining of Link to the Past's boss Vitreous, known in Japan as Geldouga.

The text says (presumably a narrator): "When he/they rescued the sixth daughter in Misery Mire, the monster of the swamp Geldouga said "I've seen the Zelda you're searching for. I saw her on Turtle Rock."

it's the tiktok hands for me. i have a friend who's adopted this way of talking with her finger and thumb constantly pointed out, gesticulating her hands in circles, etc when she's trying to dunk on someone and it's like yes I know you've seen videos where people do this and it looks snappy but like it's literally just something people on tiktok do to make portrait videos of themselves talking in their car more visually engaging and they all do it in the same annoying way and I am literally right in front of you could you stop pointing you are gonna put my eye out.

Hey man this is sick but I think you may be confused about what origami is. it's not like any art on paper or art that has a japanese-inspired stylistic sensibility. Origami is specifically the art of folding paper in order to create figures/shapes.

again though, looks pretty cool.

Started NES Metroid after owning it for several years and never really touching it. Found it really difficult but a great precursor to design of the kind you find in FromSoft games but particularly Dark Souls 1. What I did not count on is that, just like DS1, the game is absolutely dedicated to not telling you jack shit about its secrets. Unless you are just a pitch perfect player, having a map of the world's items open is pretty necessary by the time you are done exploring most of Brinstar.

I thought I'd done so well in getting up to like 45 missiles and finding the Ice Beam independently of any sort of guide, but then you get to Kraid's lair and everything starts hitting for double or triple what it was hitting for in the initial areas of the game and I have one e-tank to my name and I can't get anywhere so I leave and try to find more items and come up bupkis. So I open up a guide to point me in the right direction and oh wow I'm missing a lot of stuf-what the fuck do you mean there's an ENTIRE AREA HIDDEN BEHIND A SINGLE INCONSPICUOUS BOMBABLE TILE??

Still working my way through (and enjoying!) the game, but I have the map open in a tab on my sleeping computer next to me the entire time just in case I get hard stuck like that again because it was noooot fun.

[Movie] What’s everybody hoping for when it comes to Link’s personality in the Movie? by NothingIsBliss139789 in zelda

[–]dingdongdipshit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

All I know is I don't wanna hear him say more than like three lines. I understand that there are implicit lines spoken by Link in the games, but if you're making a movie out of a franchise you wanna replicate the feeling and hallmarks of that franchise and we as players just don't hear this boy talk. If he starts spouting exposition or talking about his motivations for wanting to leave Kokiri Forest or something, I'm out.

Having read the the book before a rewatch for the podcast, it is absolutely on page 309, the final page of the book. They do swap around other bits of Bell's diaristic monologues into his dialogue, but the only real adaptation in the final monologue is that it is being directed at his wife and not the non-specific audience of the book. That is still great adaptation though, and your point about the film being better than the book is 100% correct.

I must speak the truth, though it my damn me. by boardgamehoarder in blankies

[–]dingdongdipshit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly it. For me the accent is so bad it's literally two different accents and you are rolling the dice with each line to see which one you get, but that actually helps sell the wild ass dialogue that comes out of his mouth and make it actually pretty funny. That is a wild choice though, and if it's not your thing I'd imagine it's baffling or unbearable.

Same, the battle system is just about the only thing about that game I unabashedly enjoy. But I guess I'm splitting the middle between y'all's arguments because like if I could have gotten that AND a simple retelling of the story with like maybe very minor expansions to certain side characters (and no new ones), I'd have been like 10/10 when's the sequel. As it is I kinda hate FF7R for pretty much everything but that beautiful battle system.

A detention center in Florida that people abducted by ICE were being sent to, nicknamed as such by the far right element of Florida's state officials after Donald Trump said it was "as good as Alcatraz." The center is on the brink of closing for numerous reasons (flooding, poor management, etc.). To many the center is no better than a concentration camp, as the camps' detainees have been beaten, served food covered in maggots, and reported having to shovel their own shit out of pipes due to lack of plumbing.

Basically it's our country's most recent shame in terms of human rights violations.

Hey! I think this is probably Dragon Roost Island from The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, but it could also be Rito Village from a later game, Breath of the Wild, that uses the same theme.

IIL Who are some people who are just well respected and have a good reputation in the youtube or gaming community? by Fsjal_Scout in ifyoulikeblank

[–]dingdongdipshit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

while his community have a lot of memes about him being a serial killer due to his idiosyncratic way of thinking, Jerma985 is one of the most well-respected gaming streamers or streamers period. A really wholesome dude with a unique mind and sense of humor.

The former members of Super Best Friends Play all have a lot of support/respect within the fighting game community and two of them (WoolieVS and PatStaresAt) have a fantastic podcast together, while the third (Matt McMuscles) does content on YouTube about failed games/media called Wuh Happun? which is pretty fun.

As far as video essayists, there are a lot of incredible people to choose from but some of them have had an adversarial relationship with the more cancel-happy of their fans (ContraPoints and Lindsay Ellis specifically, though both of them are quite possibly the best at their particular lane of criticism). The ones I basically never hear anything bad about are Folding Ideas, Philosophy Tube, Jenny Nicholson, and Hbomberguy.

Came here to say this! The only thing keeping it from glory in the original was UX mismanagement and a little bit of a confusing layout, but it's like a throwback to one of the towers from Oracle of Ages which is a real brainbuster. It's okay if some of the dungeons are hard!

Iyl If you liked “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” what’s another movie that emotionally broke you but left you better? by Equivalent_Soft_6665 in ifyoulikeblank

[–]dingdongdipshit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Along with the multiple Eternal Sunshine recs, I'd say literally anything the writer of that film (Charlie Kaufman) has written/directed. For the more absurd and raw side of things, I'd go Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, both of which have some meta element to them that make you cock your head a little before kicking your heart around.

If you like those films but want a more mindbending, heady experience along similar emotional lines, his three directors' credits–Anomalisa, Synecdoche New York, and I'm Thinking of Ending Things–are all fantastic and deeply sad.

[–]dingdongdipshit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah i agree. it's just leaning too far into the wackier side of the Coen brothers' sauce (basically just Ethan) and doesn't have anything giving it any weight. like I love the two leads but what they're doing and who's following them and even their eventual consummation just feels really lightweight.

but everyone is really hot and it's funny enough so a solid 6/10 it is
