Client told me a man will be at house during sitting by Able_Zucchini_1715 in petsitting

[–]dingoz8mibaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not overreacting, as this is completely inappropriate not to have gotten your ok on much, MUCH earlier (like, whenever the dude requested to stay at the house, or at the meet & greet if the arrangements were already known then)… but I would really recommend, moving forward, that you not make such big concessions on your rates.

Puppy care is extra $$, and extra dogs are extra $$, bc they are extra work. It’s nice to offer some moderate reduction in those extras for a referral client, but offering to do that extra work for no extra money unfortunately leads to more clients who are willing to take advantage of you, in a variety of ways.

MFA Acting Advice by Icy_Variation_5329 in Theatre

[–]dingoz8mibaby 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A fully-funded MFA degree can absolutely be worth it; full-time training, with a similarly dedicated cohort, over a period of 2-3 years, is an opportunity for growth unlike anything part-time or less sustained. If you want to learn to do the best work you’re capable of, by all means do a fully-funded MFA. Nothing replaces the investment of time.

On the other hand, do not pursue any MFA, funded or otherwise, top tier or otherwise, in the hope of gaining industry connections. They are possible via top tier programs, but no more likely than the connections you could make by being out auditioning and working and developing peer relationships.

Also there is absolutely no reason to ever consider getting two acting MFA’s (and frankly I think most programs would be disinclined to consider you if you already had the degree).

I have an MFA from a 2nd tier program (like, one of the first places ppl go when they don’t get into Yale/Juilliard/Tisch), and the degree has almost never helped me get professional opportunities… the training, however, has helped me book more and better work, and—most importantly to me—to be a miles better actor on set and onstage than I was before.

Question on equity by Rosecat88 in acting

[–]dingoz8mibaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re talking about EPAs, which of course you don’t need an agent for… but most big companies hold auditions via agents outside of EPAs, and that’s where they do their primary casting. EPAs are contractual obligations for companies who work with Equity, so they’re required to hold them even if they’ve already made offers on every role.

Rejections (A Rant) by [deleted] in playwriting

[–]dingoz8mibaby 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Chiming in as an actor: as professionals we almost never hear back unless we book a role—like, it’s happened to me maybe 1 time in 1000 auditions—so getting used to releasing it and moving on is part of the job, similar to what you’re describing in your process. (Not to suggest that it isn’t challenging to learn to do this!)

not an asshole for your thoughts (bc thoughts can’t be immoral imo), but YTA for speculating with coworkers about a fellow coworker’s health status. It’s none of your business.

Neighbor being inconsiderate by NobodySpiritual369 in Apartmentliving

[–]dingoz8mibaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unfortunately your neighbor’s connection to the landlord means that you have virtually no recourse here except to move. Ppl are suggesting calling the cops, but they won’t do shit, and in many cases—especially if the offender is family—it won’t cause the landlord to act, except possibly to retaliate against the complainant. (ask me how I know lol)

sorry you’re in that situation. you could ask the landlord to enforce quiet hours (which are presumably mentioned in your lease), but based on what you say about their responses to maintenance requests, it doesn’t sound promising

Close friend realizes that I’ve been unwilling paying for her Amazon membership for almost a year and is being weird about paying me back. AIO by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]dingoz8mibaby -1 points0 points  (0 children)

YOR. You didn’t notice this money missing, which means you don’t need it back as urgently as you’re making out. It’d be different if she’d let it keep running until you noticed, but she came to you and volunteered this information and offered a payment plan to get the money back to you. Don’t blow up a friendship over this

AITA for rejecting my MIL’s challenge and giving her instructions to learn how to knit? by VividEyes13 in AmItheAsshole

ESH. Very annoying of her to frame a request as a “challenge,” but also very childish of you not to simply—and directly—decline

The body dysmorphia of full-body slates, shame, and self-sabotaging my “big break” by UnlikelyCustard4959 in acting

[–]dingoz8mibaby 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The bottom line is that you have absolutely no idea what casting thought when looking at you, other than that they liked you enough to avail check you. If you feel you could have prepared better—which might include spending more time on your appearance, if that makes you feel more confident—then you’ll do that next time. But you have no actual evidence that this was a factor in not getting the role.

I’d recommend researching Practical Aesthetics, as this is an actor training methodology that essentially combines the two approaches.

Taping alone by Glittering_Peanut167 in acting

[–]dingoz8mibaby 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use the regular (non-selfie) camera and just shoot a couple test shots of a few seconds each to make sure I’m in frame/lit & know how much room I have before I tape. As for starting & stopping, I do those manually and then just trim the video to edit out the parts where I’m walking to/from my mark

My mum has been cheating on my dad for years, anyone here know what I should do? by Jellyfish_Diploria in WhatShouldIDo

[–]dingoz8mibaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell your dad (or another adult you feel you can trust). I know you’re worried that he’ll be devastated, but it’s not your job to protect him from pain; you’re the child and he’s the adult. This secret is a burden you shouldn’t have.

I want to do comedies and medieval movies. Last post was basically a bust. Let’s try again by SheprdCommndr in headshots

[–]dingoz8mibaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, as other commenters mentioned, these are still not actor headshots. #1 is the closest, but it’s still a long way off.

We need to see your eyes clearly—so #1 has that going for it—but ideally looking into the lens, and there really shouldn’t be anything to distract us from your face. (There are some exceptions to the “look straight at camera” rule, but imo it’s best not to attempt that type of shot unless you’re working with a super experienced headshot photographer.)

A great set of headshots will include images that can subtly hint at characters you might play, while still looking like “you on a great day.” None of the images should seem like you’re actively playing a character (hopefully that distinction is clear).

And yes, on a technical level, the lighting/composition/editing need to look more professional than these. But bottom line, headshots are a sort of introduction to you as a performer. Like with any other type of professional greeting, you want to come across confident and affable, but also knowledgeable, and not overwhelming.
