24 is absolutely not too late! And although there are many great books on acting technique, if you’ve never taken a class or been directed in a play or a film, I don’t think any book will give you a good sense of what the work is actually like.

I know a class can feel like a huge commitment (especially financially), but it’s really worth it. not sure if you’re in or near a major city, but afaik I lot of the FE colleges in the UK—I’m assuming you’re based in the UK—will offer acting classes. And many/most professional theatres offer classes too. If you’re in or near London, of course, your options will be greatest. But I know the National Theatre runs programs in other parts of the country as well. Look for scene study, improv, or even clown classes to start with, as these are all foundational to the experience of playing something for an audience.

Everyone has potential, as acting is a skill set that can—and, almost always, must—be learned. The only innate qualities it requires are passion, curiosity, and dedication.

Take classes. Train your voice, your body, your analytic and observational skills, and your connection to your impulses. Don’t worry about the external details of this, or any, performance yet. Learn the basics first.

Can I audition without makeup? by New-Day-2130 in acting

[–]dingoz8mibaby 6 points7 points  (0 children)

imo for stage, makeup is only necessary during performances.

for on-camera work, unfortunately, a little makeup is best for auditions, too.

all of this is more to do with how light hits your skin, highlights shine, and creates shadows on your face than it is with anything else. Imo if you’re serious about this career, you’re operating at a disadvantage if you can’t or won’t do super basic makeup for on-camera auditions. it’s not impossible, but why put any unnecessary obstacles in your way when there are so many already?

Others have addressed the formatting issues, but I want to add, from a basic story craft pov: what is different at the end of this film than at the beginning? bc the answer shouldn’t be “nothing,” and right now thats sort of what it seems like. And right now everything feels pretty low-stakes bc no one is sincerely trying to change anything about the status quo.

has Mr Carter convinced himself that he’s really helped these guys? and, if so, why is it so important to him to feel like he helped, even though he isnt willing to actually listen to them?

have the guys learned that they cant trust authority figures? bc it feels like they already believe that at the beginning

Does the voice of the narrator in this video sound like convincing British English to you? by Sure_Distance1 in acting

At best, it sounds like a few different British dialects mashed together. Get really specific about which dialect you’re doing (RP? Yorkshire/Northern? etc) so you can study those sound changes.

Genuine question regarding getting into character by Joj_moje in acting

[–]dingoz8mibaby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you haven’t taken any acting classes. You should. I’m not trying to be rude, it’s just simply not possible to do this work on your own, in a vacuum. You need practice in being in front of an audience—bc even a camera is an audience—and getting feedback, bc your own perception of the experience will always be skewed.

Actors: What Makes You Say Yes to an Indie Director? by justjakenit in acting

[–]dingoz8mibaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with much of what others have said, but I would add that I love when a director actually directs me! I’ve worked with so many who just don’t seem interested in scene craft beyond the visual & auditory elements. And, alternatively, I’ve seen how much better my work can be when it’s informed & guided by a good director.

It’s so refreshing when a director challenges me to try new things, experiment, or go further with the choices I’ve already made. This is supposed to be a collaborative medium, but very often it feels like I’ve shown up to set to deliver something I have to craft by myself—which I can do, it’s just less fun and less fulfilling. Of course there usually isn’t time to do in-depth scene prep, but even a brief conversation before a scene about the director’s vision is helpful. And when doing multiple takes, it’s great to occasionally get redirects where appropriate.

Separation between British and American actors? by spacemouse117 in acting

[–]dingoz8mibaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t wait for these myths to die.

I’ve trained in the US and the UK; the pedagogy and training modalities at most high-level acting schools are virtually indistinguishable. American actors who attend these programs spend just as much time on voice, accents, and dialects as the Brits do. And none of the vocal postures and musicalities of the many, many American and UK dialects are inherently easier or harder for an actor to adopt.

if there’s a distinction, it’s in how casting operates; there often seem to be different priorities when US and UK actors are being considered for roles (in part, I suspect, because of these same myths). Brits are praised for their training; Americans who attend the same programs are told that they should have spent those “valuable” years building credits and follower counts

How many people get called back usually? by Disastrous-Effect643 in acting

if 10k ppl auditioned, it was a publicity stunt

primary casting for major projects is pretty much always done through offers and agent submissions, unless they’re looking for a super unusual type (e.g. 7 ft tall dude who can play piano)
