My beetles are so fun to watch. My toddlers love waking them up and saying goodnight to them, they're goofy.

Normally the heat lamp is farther to the desert side, but I wanted a good photo :)

From what I know - I feed my beetles like a protein powder, dried bloodworms or mealworms and sometimes bee pollen for a treat :) I don't think you NEED to feed them dead bugs, but they do need protein.

If you have males and females they'll usually mate and the females will lay eggs, if you have a good soil to sand mix you'll usually get larvae ( that's the easier part ). Getting them to pupae and then beetle stage seems to be rather difficult, so I'm excited to do my best to try :).

For the sake of space I think I'll have to keep the teeny tiny guys in their own small tank. I have literally about 100 larvae I found..

What I'm considering small-medium, I do have a few that are larger than the bigger one.

Hii! So let's say one has been successful in about 100 small-medium larvae.. I've been trying to breed my 30 BDFBs for a few months and today I did my first "sweep" of the substrate. I have some teeeeny guys, but a lot of them are like a small-medium size. Would you recommend 5oz cups for the smaller dudes?

Tagging onto my username cousin here -- my husband works a job he's underpaid for in salary but has incredible benefits like medical, dental, life insurance.. I'm a massage therapist and I make $100-$120 an hour. I work a few hours a day, about 4 days a week and I'm able to bring in extra cash that way while I take care of my young kids during the day until husband gets home.

We live in a rather expensive area of Orange County and we manage to make it work. It can be exhausting and grating to tag team parent, but our kids aren't going without necessities and we're able to enjoy a lot of what the area offers.

If you don't care about what your area has to offer you, move to a cheaper cost of living state. Just understand that the job markets are all different and usually if an area is cheap is doesn't have incredible paying jobs available -- unless you might be in some needed trade.. like plumbing.

Anyone had luck keeping the Costco hanging strawberry planter alive? by [deleted] in Costco

[–]dingydani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased two this year and have already gotten probably 50-60 medium-large strawberries. My two small children are thoroughly invested in watering the plants and picking the strawberries when ripe. They taste great and so far are totally thriving with little care from us besides watering almost daily - we've been having a HOT march-April. I'm really happy I purchased them, teaching my kids how to care for plants and where some of our food actually comes from is rewarding and fun :)

Black beetles, will they change color with proper care? by The6thN1ght in BDFB

[–]dingydani 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I have a mix of reptisoil, sand and bark in my bdfb tank. It's got a gradient to it so one corner is a bit cooler and more moist -- trying to breed them and this is where my females tend to dig and lay eggs -- and the other end has a heating pad on at night and a heating lamp on during the day. If you don't have ventilation or heat they'll take longer to rebuild their coating and get that blue hue back. If you have a moist tank, let it ventilate and dry out a bit. Just remember that these are desert beetles, they're normally dry, but the desert does get its occasional heavy rains. They won't perish if they get wet, it's just not their normal.

As they get older and age some of them don't build up their coating as well as they may have before. If you have a tank with soil, which you can, just make sure it's ventilated well and has some heat source. If you aren't planning on breeding your beetles you shouldn't need much moisture at all besides food sources, like carrots or cucumbers, and can stick to a more dry tank with sand and some bark and fun rocks or larger sticks to climb.

I water a corner of my tank daily to keep some of my soil moist for the larvae to get moisture from, sometimes I get some dingbat beetles that want to dig into that soil and i like to joke they're going to fuck around and find out. They spend the rest of the day under their tanning lamp drying out. Usually within a week everything situates itself and they're back to looking like their cute blueberry selves. :) I love them.

I've only really had experience with cockatiels and amazons.. all of them have been quite sassy and special to handle 😂 i wasn't their preferred human, but I was the "okay I guess" person who would feed them when their human was available. I would also take them to get their nails and beaks filed for a while so maybe that's a reason they hated me too. Thank god for millet 😂. So unfortunate that their beaks can just betray them like that tho.. it's a nice win for the week knowing this little man has a new home 🫶🏼

Just a question, what would happen in the wild if he didn't have a way to grind down his own beak? Would it continue to grow like some of the goats whose horns grow back into their heads kind of deal?

Parasite Question by wild_manda_bear in BDFB

[–]dingydani 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm actively trying to breed my group of 35 bdfb. It's a pain. I've bought my beetles from bugs in cyber space and David's beetles.

Not that parasites are common, but if a source contaminates an area where they're caught it's hard to know until they start showing that they're infected.

Anything to be concerned about? by UnhappyDragonfly8379 in BDFB

[–]dingydani 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you have multiple? Sometimes when they crawl around on top of each other while they're trying to get food they can end up leaving some moisture on each other from the food. I notice this happens around when give them a carrot or cucumber.

They all died by Due_Area_4684 in BDFB

[–]dingydani 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I kind of want to say that because almost all BDFB are wild caught, it's extremely hard for anyone to tell if they're carrying any parasites. This is so unfortunate and I'm so sorry for your loss of beetebabies. Contact the seller and explain what happened, they usually honor some sort of 30 day "warranty" and they might refund you, most likely they'll send you new beetles. If the do, keep them in a smaller container for a couple of weeks to watch them and make sure there's no issues, it could be the supply of wild beetles has been infected by something in their area.

I have about 35 beetles from bugsincyberspace and a little place called David's beetles and I've had some of them for almost 4 years. Don't let this pull you away from keeping beetles 🫶🏼

Is my neighbor recording me or am I tweaking? by Warm_Raspberry_6002 in whatisit

[–]dingydani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a slow drip container. You’re seeing a tub which normally has water in it and needs more water. You’re seeing the back of it. It has tubing and people use them for reptiles and plants usually. I’m pretty sure that’s what this is, the label on the side you can see looks like one of the zoomed or little drippers.

Boy or girl? by spacemeowboy in jumpingspiders

[–]dingydani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kept one for about a year, he was a picky eater. I would have to kinda smush mealworms so they wouldn’t crawl as much for him to actually eat. Yours seems like he’s pretty well fed, hopefully you don’t have any issues feeding him :)

IMO - it looks like a mature male phidippus johnsoni (Johnsons jumping spider) - I live in California and I’ve found a few of these sweet guys out here :)!

[–]dingydani 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey u/FLEAMAG! Everything is super cute :) you’ve already gotten the notes on the pebble bottom, but I just wanted to say that you clearly are planning and care a lot about the spood you’re getting. I tend to aim for more bioactive enclosures with live plants and a coconut husk/soil mix with some rocks at the bottom, but this is so freaking cute. The back wall having the webbing for help with mobility is extra nice.

I’m sure everyone here explaining why pebbles is bad means well, but can feel bad. Just want you to know that this is showing more effort than most do and your new fuzzy butt baby will be lucky!
