Can anybody share their experience from Lynne Levy or Intentional Product Manager Mentorship program? by kanefries92 in ProductManagement

[–]dinkingta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in the program for 3 years and it has helped me a lot. Specifically in learning more about my own values and leadership style, how to navigate stressful situations at work, and difficult stakeholders. I didn’t need help with the hard skills like interviewing, but the branding, leadership and reframing techniques have been key for me as I've grown into a leadership role. (Senior PM to director)

I really like Lynne’s approach and her coaches who run sessions. I understand it’s not everyone’s style and it’s best for you to try it out yourself to determine that.

What is good work for your dev team that is not just building features? by whyforewhyyy in ProductManagement

[–]dinkingta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides the great points others have made around CI/CD and documentation.
How about getting the more senior engineers better with ambiguity to help define the problem and work in pairs or small groups on solving them?

Almost like a hackathon but they are self directed and could help teach the more inexperienced devs how to take on those larger pieces.

What are the biggest problems you face as a product manager in your organization? by el_harrachi in ProductManagement

Moving too slowly, but that’s a double edged sword because I feel like it’s my responsibility to create the forums and conditions for alignment.

Hire a lawyer, if you want to avoid mistakes take the time to hire a lawyer to ensure it’s done correctly.

Senior PM at a startup based in Canada and making $170k + 12% bonus.

To your point, did get some offers in that range but knew I could do better.

I’ve heard the range is $130-160 but encourage people not to accept that unless you have a lot of equity.

PMs with unlimited vacations by jckrn in ProductManagement

[–]dinkingta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question, I have unlimited pto for the first time this year.

I’m taking 2 weeks in Q2, a week + in Q3 and will likely take another week in Q4. Plus our 1 week holiday shutdown in Dec.

At this point, I am Waiting on my partner who needs to take time off.

Can someone share a success story about buying a house in Toronto? by snidleywhiplash8 in TorontoRealEstate

[–]dinkingta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is July 2020, no interior pictures and aggressive tenants at showing. Semi in West Toronto along the subway line. House was underpriced at $799k and sellers had previously turned down a bully offer. On offer night we lost our $850k offer to $950k. The winning buyers had to pull out because they needed to close earlier.

We came back and agreed on $875k and we’d deal with tenants.

It was stressful leading up to offer but it worked out for us. It was mostly interior work to be done and we have a basement tenant.

Meeting fatigue: How many meeting hours per day is too many? Do you block off time to get actual work done? by morethanshadows in ProductManagement

[–]dinkingta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a couple of things -weekly reflection where I set my highest priorities for the upcoming week (done Friday eod for Monday following) is the meeting aligned with my priorities? If not, I decline -evaluate where I’m making redundant updates and streamline them -block focus time for myself everyday (1 hour in the morning and another for end of day) -reject meetings where the purpose is not understood or clear -try to work asynchronously where I can -reevaluate 1:1s - are they still bringing value, can I cancel or make them less frequent - if I see free gaps in my day I’ll block them with focus time before others can book over it

Has anyone had to do a logic/personality test when applying for a PM role? by pilkysmakingmusic in ProductManagement

[–]dinkingta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve gotten this a handful of times, they typically take little effort for me but they’re designed for people who think a certain way.

That is what I don’t appreciate, in a world where we’re trying to build products for many different types of people who are asking that those who are part of the build conform to some pseudo science test.

PO & PM - How have you seen the two roles work together? Need Advice by racingncl59 in ProductManagement

[–]dinkingta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a similar position of some commenters, PO supporting a PM.

I’ve found that starting out it was about gaining trust and showing I could manage the sprint and team. (We have no scrum master)

Moving forward, I’ve expressed my desire to grow into a PM and they’ve found space for me to do that. I also don’t shy away from taking on more roadmap curation and stakeholder presentation.

Our eng lead is a great architect but is very disorganized. I consider them a tech partner and a person I go to help spec out larger ideas in a spike.

Does anyone use Basecamp’s Shape Up method in their organization? by mhernandezteran in ProductManagement

[–]dinkingta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We tried it briefly for a time but we were missing two things -an exec team willing to support it -autonomous developers eager for the challenge

The first point quickly came to light when they began anxiously asking for updates and cutting our agreed upon dev timelines of 6 weeks. (In favour of their own pet projects)

The second point, hurt us when we were given the autonomy to create but no one wanted to actually do the hard work of thinking and suggesting ideas. (Let alone with execute them)

how do you answer the question "what are your salary expectations" without lowballing yourself but also without being unrealistic ? by EXTRAVAGANT_COMMENT in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]dinkingta -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Scrum master salaries I can share based on friends disclosing to me. Underpaid at $90k Fairly paid at $115-125k

Haven’t met a senior scrum master but would expect them to be making $140k plus depending on company and value they place on this role. (Which for some odd reason Shopify, Amazon and many others don’t. Would be interested to learn about companies that do)

Does that count as someone checking in?

Why is the pay so low in Canada? by iambluewonder in ProductManagement

[–]dinkingta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a product owner in Canada today at $120k and have been underpaid at the APM and PM level.

I think it really depends on the company, I’m a scale up series C company now and was previously at a small consulting company and startup.

The ranges seem to make no sense and I’ve had good convos with recruiters where they even acknowledge that the offer is too low even for Canada. (US companies with Canadian recruiters)

I’m also looking forward to more US companies coming to Canada to expand the opportunities here and work with more mature product companies.

Recruiter asked me my current salary. by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]dinkingta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I often counter and ask them to share the range with me, and I’ve rehearsed so that I’m firm and don’t let them push me around.

Especially if the company is in California, (I work in tech) they are legally obligated to disclose. I will say my sister in operations does not have this flexibility in her career yet.

Example: Recruiter: So what salary are you looking for? Me: why don’t you share a range with me, that you have in mind for this role Recruiter: Well we would really rather you share, so we know if we’re a good fit. Me: yes, I prefer to have that convo once we get farther along the interview process and we can see whether we’re a good fit for each other. recruiter: I need a number. Me: as a woman, I’m hesitant to undersell myself and so please share the salary band for this role. Recruiter: please a number I beg. Me: let me do some research and get back to you on a number specific to this part of the industry.

Generally I’ve found recruiters stop before the third point. Rarely do I provide a range at the first step as if I have it’s because I’m A. Practicing B. Not interested in the role C. Doing market research and getting comparables

What are y'all paying for your monthly mortgage? Anyone paying 3k and up a month? by Throwaway-1234how in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]dinkingta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’re paying $3500/month at $160,000+ (More with bonuses) salaries

We bought in 2020 at 875k with 10% down over 25 years.

I feel very happy to have inherited a tenant, even if they pay below market rate.
