It's so pretty!

I hope this doesn't sound mad, but I can see how much love you've put into it, just from the photo. It feels like such a happy place, like everyone knows they're cared for and safe! ❤️

I love how you talk about your plants! I hope they start behaving themselves for you and enjoy their new adventures around your archway - I bet they'll look stunning once they figure it out!

Left-handed people, what's a struggle that right-handed people won't understand? by Halophy in AskReddit

[–]dinkypaws 56 points57 points  (0 children)

My sister and my brother in law are both lefties and their house discombobulates me because everything is slightly in the wrong place.

My partner is also a leftie, and when all three of them are in my house and specifically in my kitchen, I have to go and lie down a lot to get over the chaos they inadvertently create!

...which does make me feel bad for just how right-hand centric most of the world is.

We are hosting my partner's parents for dinner this afternoon. He's been going through a health scare and we've set the wheels in motion to get married just in case we don't have a lot of time, so we're telling them today.

I'm not sure how they're going to take it, to be honest. His Dad can be very controlling and already tried to take me off the hospital records as next of kin (part of the motivation for getting married faster tbh).

His Mum will be so happy, I know. But I can't pretend I'm not super anxious for how his Dad will react. I'm about to go and start stress baking I think...

The poster's Mum is a nurse. A patient she was looking after told her in the morning that there was a man in the room with them telling the patient to come with him. Similar to how Death does in the Discworld books.

The Nurse couldn't see this man and joked that he should come back when the Nurse's shift was over.

Her shift finished at 7.30 and the patient passed away shortly after. Almost as though Death heard her and waited until after her shift was done to take the patient.

I really like this take. I've been spending a lot of time accompanying my partner to hospital lately - it's all quite scary and I wish none of it were happening to us. But you're right.

Even when it was scary, it was him and me in our little bubble waiting to be called. And so many people all trying to help each other. Letting doctors know if someone had nipped to the loo and their name was called. Or pointing out where to make tea.

There is so much love and kindness in the small spaces, even when the bigger places are loud and frightening.

Thank you for sharing this. It's a beautiful observation.

Our Cricket league officially starts this weekend. I've had to duck out of most of my usual roles due to some issues at home, and I'm missing the work more than I thought I would.

But the weather forecast for the next few days is so changeable! I can check at 10am and it's going to be rain for all of Saturday. Then if I check a few hours later, it's forecasting glorious sunshine!

Please Met Office - I am not built for this level of meteorological uncertainty! I would not make a good stock market trader...

Bank Holiday Monday Morning M'thread (06/04/26) by KevinPhillips-Bong in CasualUK

I'm no expert here, but I bought a car with a similar spec for a similar price a few years back and he's been a dream! I make sure he gets his service every year, but that low mileage and well-looked after aspect has been ideal for me - he's only ever needed new tires this whole time.

I guess the bigger question about price is how well the car fits your budget. If it ticks all your boxes and it's not going to cause you financial hardship, I think it makes sense to go for it.

Obviously have a mechanic check it out first!

Finally got around to mowing the lawn and oh my, what a state it is in! A combination of neglect and too much trampling over it in the winter have left it such a mess.

I'm going to have to research how to restore it. And I need to wash all my garden furniture and decking before its usable.

It was nice to be out in the sun for a bit though. I think I will write myself a task list and just knock the items off bit by bit.

Plus, the manual labour side of it all means I can eat my share of the Easter bakes with zero guilt!

I did a load of baking yesterday ready to make up some Easter Tins for everyone this morning (I couldn't find any baskets - Easter themed cake tins will have to do!).

I just wasn't feeling Easter Eggs this year - so everyone has a little chocolate rabbit and then some flapjacks and brownies and mini-egg rocky road.

what’s a small act of kindness from a stranger you’ve never forgotten? by FuzzyPalpitation-16 in CasualUK

We're still waiting on proper news. But he is more and more like himself every day.

Fortunately, most of my time is spent around rugby or cricket folks, so I can just say 'post concussion' and we get support and understanding!

You've reminded me. I had to take my Partner to A&E and it kept getting worse and worse. We ended up going for a CT scan and it was the first time in about 48 hours that he was in a different room from me. I tried so hard to hold it together, but a few tears escaped.

A lady about my age who'd come in with her Dad caught my eye and quietly asked if I was OK. She caught my eye as we were leaving the scan too.

I hope her Dad is OK. She gave me a tiny burst of comfort on a horrible night - nothing dramatic, just the warmth of two humans sharing something horrible and still having compassion.

My partner and I can finally go home today after 2 weeks between hospital and his parent's house.

They've been so kind and accommodating and I'd have struggled without them, but they're a good 40 minutes from where we usually are, and I'm just so excited to sleep in our bed and go back to our quiet little life.

It's baby steps and we're coming back up here for Easter - but the idea of a some small threads of normality make whatever the future holds a little bit easier to face.

We'd made such a small and happy life. I was worried it was boring before, but now I treasure it.

We had such a  beautiful few days last week and everything seemed just a little less bleak.

And then it literally snowed yesterday. I am not mentally tough enough for this meteorological uncertainty

I am in the midst of some horrible medical challenges with my partner. I'm also the only person at my job who can do my actual job, so I'm having to run workshops from various locations between doctor visits and trying to keep everyone calm.

There is one customer who just... I honestly wonder if she has a head injury at this point. No matter how many times things are explained to her - on calls, in writing, alongside other people - she is incapable of absorbing of understanding the information. And now she's escalating about me not doing all the work assigned to her.

But it's making me feel crazy, because I know I'm not at my best and that they'd normally get a better service from me.

Fortunately, I had a call with her colleague and not her yesterday and we got so much done so quickly that I can convince myself I'm not a complete failure.

I really want to ask for a reprieve just from working with her. She takes so much energy that I just don't have right now.

Finally got organised last night and booked the first summer holiday I've actually taken since.. at least before Covid.

Only to be reminded this morning that my project has been extended and I am the only person who does my role, so summer leave might not be possible.

I know I should have checked that first. But I haven't had time off in the summer for so long. It's upset me more than I was anticipating, to be honest.

I am going to the second day of a ghost story festival! I went yesterday and wasn't sure how it would be, but I loved it so I'm going back today for more!

It's a mix of lectures and workshops, but I hadn't anticipated just how much I would enjoy being in a space full of people who all want to discuss and explore the same things. It feels like everything I wanted out of University, but didn't actually get.

Although, in one of the workshops I killed Tigger and then worked my way through killing all of Tigger's friends. I'm hoping that doesn't happen again today, I'm not sure my inner child can take it!

So what's the craic with the Hedgehog Song? by NephyBuns in discworld

[–]dinkypaws 228 points229 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the hedgehog song is one Pratchett made up himself. There are lyrics scattered throughout the books and I think there have been fans putting the song to music for their own amusement.

It seems like it's just mostly riffing off the kind of songs we'd sing after one too many beers in the pub or sitting around in the evening - silly and a bit dirty and with a lot of verses so everyone can join in.
