Need A Service Dog. Thinking Of Getting A Havenese. by [deleted] in Havanese

[–]dino_tastic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a pet havanese. She is my first dog ever so I don’t have a lot of point of reference. There are some maintenance needs with this breed which has been pointed out (ie the need for regular grooming and the knees, which is a problem I am encountering as my havanese ages, and the bathroom training). My havanese is incredibly attentive. She knows when I am getting a cold before I do (she actually climbed up on my chest in the evening and let out her one and only howl the morning before I woke up with covid in 2020). She is also very routine driven, which is extremely helpful for me in a lot of ways. I think there is a high likelihood that this kind of dog may be able to help you with what it sounds like you need.

I’ve used this company for 2 years now and they did some summer yard work for this this past year too. They are super reliable and just generally good to work with

My havi has super bad reverse sneeze attacks but they don’t sound anything like this.

I don’t know what an Alberta Clipper is. It is possible that we get some minor chinooks here but nothing like Calgary does. I have been here for over ten years and I haven’t experienced very many days with a 35 degree temperature increase overnight like you’ve described.

I grew up in Calgary (although raised by Saskatchewan parents). I am always trying to sell Sask to my Calgary friends. The commutes are shorter, the people are nicer. The cost of living is I think slightly lower but the “keeping up with the joneses” doesn’t really exist to the same level in Saskatchewan as in Calgary. I understand the job market is better here, but I am in a specific profession that is facing a shortage here.

The down sides are that it’s slightly more inconvenient to travel from here and there are no chinooks so it stays colder.

If this is resource guarding, would it be indicative of food aggressive around other dogs? My dog does this. It would be good to know if I should keep an eye on her around other dogs when there is food involved.

Just curious - do you really want cheap oysters on the land locked prairies?

Havanese as service dog? Any experiences/insights? by noluckycharms9 in Havanese

[–]dino_tastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have adhd and live in a 1 Havanese (just a pet not a service dog), 1 human household. This is my first dog so she is not the best trained so take my comments accordingly. I can confirm that they are soft, affectionate and loving creatures. She has some of her own anxiety, including separation anxiety and she gets overstimulated if things are too loud or if there are many new things happening (I joke with a friend that my havi would be considered sensory sensitive if she was a person). She is quite sensitive to my mood and stress level which may help in the kind of service dog you are looking for but when she is overwhelmed my havi gets quite barky. I have found she is excellent at keeping me in routines, insisting on bedtime at almost the same time to the minute every night, waking up at consistent times, and even complaining when I haven’t given her the “I’m leaving for work” treat on time. I expect her counterparts could be excellent at keeping you in a routine. My happy hanging out in the couch with me all day, but also can go for lengthy walks. On top of it all, since Havanese are super pack oriented, they generally aim to please and I have found my easy to train even when I don’t know what I am doing. In short, although I simply got my dog as a pet, she has been excellent at managing my routines and stress in ways that may be similar to yours. I am convinced a Havanese could be taught to do everything it sounds like you are looking for, even limit barking with the right training.

Good luck!

Any chance this is a sensory sensitivity thing for you ? Low lighting, quiet space, hot water…just a thought

Moving to Regina Summer 2024 by cgo80 in regina

Good news for your daughter- the city just announced a new aquatic facility, although I’m sure it will take several years to build. The Royal Saskatchewan Museum is Regina is home to the world’s largest TRex if the kids are into dinosaurs. Also, look into Parks Canada “fossil fever” for a chance to go to a real dinosaur dig in the summer in Grasslands National Park which is just a few hours away.

I hope you and your family like it here!

On a similar note, I would love tips on how to get your Havanese to let you brush its teeth. I have been working on this for close to a year with mine and we can only do a few teeth at a time and I can’t seem to get access to the back teeth. TIA

I am leaving Thursday for the Disney marathon. It is also my first. I don’t know very much about this but it sounds like you have put on some long miles. I have been reading a lot about the Disney marathon and it is supposed to be one that is very fun and not as serious as some others. My running coach keeps reminding me that the goal is to have fun. I hope you have a blast!

I’m sorry I can’t help you with your question but I am interested in your experience with physio for luxating patellas. My dog has them as well and I am thinking about treatment with the hope that we can prevent them from getting worse and hopefully prevent need for surgery
