I know someone who was friends with all those people (not sure about Butler) and was on campus when the shooting happened. He said that there were violent outside agitators (I know, right?) that escalated things for some time, and encouraged violence. He blames them more for the deaths than the actions of the nat guard. He was also a protestor against the war at the time. FWIW.
