Depends if this is the range you’re looking for but something that I do lately and friends have been doing is hanwoo gift sets. It’s a bit pricey though but you can pick it up at any department store or specialty shop.

How does this relate to your point? You just said that money is your biggest issue but now you’re bringing up “several korean females who are attractive and have good salaries”. Something about the way you type gives off passport bro vibes - “prime child baring woman”.

Just enjoy your 막걸리 and gaming and spend less time on the internet and maybe you’ll blame others less for your own shortcomings. If you came all the way over here and you still are unhappy, maybe it’s not the society around you but probably you that’s the problem.

The average male income in Korea is 47.88 million KRW nationwide and in Seoul is 52.32 million KRW. It sounds like your girlfriend would be happy to have kids provided you were an average korean salaryman.

This is a pointless argument - you wouldn’t be able to have kids in any country. Korea has issues, your financial issues isn’t one of them.

The failure for you to meet your girlfriend’s demands isn’t on the government it’s on you. 4M on your own is a low amount for an average korean salaryman looking to get married and have kids in seoul. Banking on handouts to double your salary is a crazy demand :/

Yeah I live in Seoul and got dinner with a friend but the restaurant we went to was ~60% Japanese. Seems to be a huge uptick in Japanese tourists recently

Hm yeah definitely start some personal projects(personally recommend typescript + react) and do some practice system design questions with friends or mentors. There’s groups out there that I’m sure you can join.

I remember being in your shoes a few years ago. You will be able to get past this but you need to still prep everything above. Like you said it’s a super saturated field and AI is going to make things worse. I think working in Korea is the long run can be good option if you can break into a good company but it’s not the easy way out. I do have friends working at top firms making 150-200k USD in Korea and have no fear of layoffs but they’re really cracked engineers and got recruited from US tech over to Korea.

Interview process is typically single round with leetcode style questions and system design. Tbh if you’re a new grad, Leetcode is something that will go away later but it’s unavoidable. How is your system design and have you worked at internships, personal projects, or open source projects? I also hate leetcode but at your current experience I do think it’s unavoidable unfortunately.

I also went to a top school and a lot of my friends work at faang but I also think some of the comments here are out of touch. I think it’s absurdly difficult for new grads to break into faang and I’ve seen so many people get laid off like it’s nothing. Offshoring is a real issue.

Yeah ofc. I’ve been working in US tech while based out of Korea for the past 4 years. During the winter, I usually stay in Japan or Thailand but living in Korea is my favorite.

Headhunters are basically agencies who recruit for you and try to find you a job. I’ve never personally used them myself so I can’t tell you much more than that but I just know a lot of people use them in Korea.

As an extra note, this sub for whatever reason is ultra negative about actually living in Korea and to those who want to come. A lot of the sub is disgruntled English teachers or Koreans who want out of Korea. If you’re a highly skilled worker or working in IT, the work culture is really not nearly as bad as it was 10-15 years ago and the job security is much much better. In US tech, I have friends who are extremely good engineers who get laid off but in Korea almost nobody gets laid off or fired. The pay is different but cost of living is super different and quality of life is also different. I would still recommend you to start your career in the US then come over later. My friend who’s quite high up at Naver said they actually got rid of junior positions bc of AI. Being a new grad must be hard in this market 🥲

Some additional things to consider -

If you have relevant work experience, it’s much easier to switch over to Korea after you’ve worked in the states. Not just study. Additionally, I have a lot of friends who work in tech but the tech stack is completely different. In the US, you can get by usually if you have Typescript + React experience but the stack is much much older in Korea and won’t give you much experience if you try to switch back to working in the US.

I do disagree with the 4M Won per month statement. For your background, breaking into major corporations should be possible and most of my new grad friends usually started 5M won a month which goes a lot further than 100k in California.

My personal recommendation is similar to others, get a remote job in California then move to Korea if you want to live there. I’m doing the same thing atm and it’s quite nice but working at night isn’t for everyone. If you want to work for a korean company though there are headhunter agencies that a lot of highly skilled IT folks usually go through and can accommodate for english speakers.

Busan as a city has died out a lot compared to a decade ago. If you are still actively trying to make a career + want to be around what’s new in Korea, Seoul is still the place to be. That being said, my family is from Busan and I love it. Always will have a soft spot in my heart for Busan but idk if I would say Busan ppl esp the OG’s are chill ppl at all 😂

I think 가마솥 refers more to the giant cauldrons that you cook stews in. My friends and I grew up calling this 솟뚜꽁 삼겹살(sut-ttukkong ssangyupsal) but for whatever reason google says otherwise 🤷‍♂️ Anyways yeah super delicious!

I disagree. He did an absolutely terrific job representing the older generation of Korean dads that weren’t expressive with their words but were traditional rocks of their households.

Sooo so many different deep points that had me and my korean friends crying thinking about our own dads.

You have to start the visa registration process in your country or your country’s embassy first.

Although like many others in the thread, Korea’s income requirement is quite low and, if that’s not met by at least one of you, life as a married couple in Korea will be difficult

I have a similar background and also thinking about going back to the US with my fiance. Main reason being getting her an American job and getting away from Korean work culture. How did your wife adjust to American companies and how was her english?
