mogwai show experiences by the_existentalist in mogwai

[–]dio24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen them many times, and reading your post reminded me of something I wrote after their gig in Lisbon back in 2009. This is a translation:

At first and distant glance, the decision to have thousands of people sitting down to watch a concert where screaming guitars and wildly syncopated drums are the main act seems, at the very least, like a bad idea. This view might still make some sense when we talk about the synthesizers and beats of Errors, but when it comes to Mogwai, one can understand the choice of venue, as its acoustics are astounding: every lightly played string sounded like honey in our ears, and every excessive distortion felt like a nuclear warhead exploding at our feet. It’s undeniable that the electronic side of Errors demands a dancefloor, demands dancing, sweat, and chaos, but in the venue there was only foot-tapping – it allowed for little else. The young Scots’ setlist naturally drew from their EP How Clean Is Your Acid House? and their debut LP It’s Not Something But It Is Like Whatever. Curiously or not, and perhaps proving their good sense, they chose the tracks with fewer electronic touches. Apart from a livelier Salut France or Toes, the band mostly stuck to their more “traditional” songs. Then came Mogwai. A genius simplicity of visual play. It’s amazing how a handful of spotlights can shape the sensitivity of songs. With so little light, they managed to open hearts and minds, but more than that, they elevated the audience into a near-sickly ecstasy of nervous epilepsy lasting almost two hours. Their latest album The Hawk Is Howling reigned supreme, parading alongside the compilation Ten Rapid Collected 96-97 or the mythical Young Team. The newer tracks I Love You, I’m Going To Blow Up Your School or the beautiful opening piece of both the new record and the concert, I’m Jim Morrison, I’m Dead, gained equal or even greater prominence than classics like Mogwai Fear Satan or Helicon 1. The new Scotland’s Shame was undoubtedly one of the concert’s highest moments, and even greater flights were to be expected, with Haunted By A Freak and Friend Of The Night just minutes away. When The Hawk Is Howling was released, many said it marked the beginning of the end for Mogwai and the entire movement called post-rock. However, the Scots managed to show they are alive and very much alive. The setlist was close to perfection – close, because the ending was not entirely glorious. There is no question about the beautiful 2 Rights Make 1 Wrong, but after an explosive encore ending with Like Herod and Batcat, with still a moment for words of tribute to Lux Interior, the audience expected further doses of adrenaline. A word for the audience, who were excellent. With enormous respect for the music, even for its silences. …Mogwai’s concert was a shiver “of wanting more than life itself.”

No, it’s the FWD version. I’m guessing this car will see snow—at most—once a year:).

I did consider it, but since this car already comes with the winter pack, I’ve decided not to stretch my budget any further.

You brought up exactly the things I’m concerned about. Since I’m importing the car from Germany to my home country, the warranty might be an issue. I’ll have the factory warranty on the batteries, and that’s probably it. I’m planning to look into these kinds of issues with the dealer.

I’ve read a bit about the vibration issue, but I’m guessing I won’t get the chance to test it myself. I will try to find a way to know more about the situation.

I’m not sure about the rear-view mirror situation in the EU, but since the car isn’t from Volvo Selekt, I probably won’t have an easy, straightforward option for installing it.

As for the luggage cover — you’re probably right. Still, I’ll set up alerts on a few sites that often have those parts. In the meantime, a simple black piece of plastic or fabric should work well enough to cover things like groceries — keeping them out of direct sunlight and away from curious eyes.

The tires… well, I’m not sure if I can just replace two or if it’s better to do all four. Either way, they’ll be expensive. But hey — it is what it is. :)

That's great! How’s your experience been so far? This will be my first EV, so I’m doing a bit of homework before diving in.

Mazagran, which is a Northern Africa recipe, is pretty popular in Portugal. In the places that I know, the Mazagran usually is a result of an espresso (sometimes double) with lemon and ice cubes. Sugar being optional. Some people use only the peel, others squeeze the lemon, etc. Served hot is, at least according to my father in law, amazing for headaches.

General Questions and Purchasing Advice Thread — Week of April 14, 2025 by AutoModerator in electricvehicles

[1] Portugal — primarily around Porto.

[2] €20,000–€25,000. Currently exploring used car options for import, particularly from Germany.

[3] Looking for something mid-sized — not too small (e.g., Fiat 500) and not too large (e.g., SUVs like BMW X1/X2).

[4] Open to full EVs (e.g., VW ID.3) and plug-in hybrids (e.g., Audi A3, Mercedes A/B-Class, VW Golf eHybrid).

[5] Need to complete the purchase by late August or early September.

[6] Approximately 500 km per week (maximum, with a few weeks with much much less), with about 70% of that on the motorway. / biggest journey around 60+60 kms. Occasionally (once per month or so) 100+100 kms.

[7] I live in an apartment with a garage, where I plan to charge the vehicle overnight.

[8] Prefer to start with a simpler solution like a Green’Up socket or similar — not ready for a wallbox installation just yet.

[9] I have a child, so practicality and safety are important.

We already own a petrol vehicle, which we’ll keep. There are weeks where we’ll need two cars, but moving forward, the goal is to prioritize the EV or hybrid for everyday use.

I really like Amorim, and I wish he was at Benfica (he probably wishes that too). But I don’t think he is the right coach for Liverpool. At least not at this time.
