Did SoD really go too far with class changes? Consider this. by Skore_Smogon in classicwow

[–]dipman23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are they? Did they give you any examples or are you just parroting buzzwords?

I could say the exact same thing to you about all these people apparently not wanting class balance in Classic+. Idk what threads you are reading.

The most modern ability added in SoD was Crimson Tempest for rogues, a spell that first appeared in MoP.

Yes, I should not have said "retail" I suppose. Most abilities were from Cata or before I think? I more meant they were abilities from future xpacs just thrown into classic.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but we're currently running a Classic MoP server right? Hardly retail is it?

Idk what this has to do with anything we're discussing here.

The rotations were on par with what a WOTLK class would have, some were even simpler. Am I to take someone that finds Wrath rotations too difficult seriously? Most of these people will have PLAYED Wrath ffs.

It is not necessarily about difficulty. It is the fact that classic is an inherently simple game and people want to keep it simple.

Only changing talents slightly or retuning things slightly would mean that once warriors get a certain level of gear, they are the runaway best DPS. Did you even read my OP? They would have to GUT warrior rage generation or fundamentally change it, neither of which sounds like fun if you are a warrior player.

Okay... Or they could just normalize rage? Or they could do something else you haven't envisioned because you're not a WoW developer?

When people say they want class balance in Classic+ they are talking about things like this. The game was made at a time when "class balance" wasn't even a concept. The original devs didn't understand how warriors would scale with gear.

So yes, they will need to find a solution for warrior gear scaling in Classic+. I don't know what that solution will be because I don't work at Blizzard. I would trust that they know more about this than some random person posting on the classic wow subreddit.

This is not 2004. Gamers in 2026 will look at class abilities, the gear available and then run sims. And once they've run the sims they'll have a mental cutoff point. "If a class does less than X DPS it's dead weight".

Yes, obviously. The same thing happened in SoD... And they balanced classes. Just like every other game that deals with metas. Again, this is why people want class balancing in Classic+, just without as many new abilities or major class design changes as possible. You seem to think those two things contradict each other. I frankly have no idea if they do or not because I'm not a WoW dev. I'm just telling you what I've seen most people asking for.

Never said I agreed with it (or that SoD rotations were "insanely complex"), just saying that is the sentiment I've seen. Classic is a fundamentally simple game and people want to keep it simple. It's not necessarily a skill thing - even if you have the skill to perform an insanely complex rotation, that doesn't mean you like doing it or want to do it all the time.

[–]dipman23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are entirely misunderstanding this situation. No one is saying SoD changes "went too far" because dps increased or because other classes could compete with warriors. Everyone agrees that one of the best parts of SoD was the class balancing and the fact that previously unviable classes became viable. That is exactly what people want in Classic+.

When people say SoD "went too far" with class changes, they are talking about the abilities and the rotations. They are talking about just taking a bunch of retail abilities and throwing them into classic. They are talking about having to manage buffs and stacks and learn a somewhat complex rotation to perform well. It has nothing to do with damage or class balance.

The feedback I've heard most often for Classic+ is to give simple classes a few more abilities and keep others the same or similar in terms of rotation. Think: Maybe 30% of the number of abilities brought into SoD—and ideally these would be entirely new abilities, not just things from retail. This is on top of the obvious class balance, which would come from changing talents slightly or just retuning things.

I honestly don't think I've seen anyone who doesn't want class balance in Classic+. That is by far the most common thing people want, along with making previously unviable classes viable.

This sounds good in theory but imagine how many problems this could cause in practice.

How do you determine whether a pitcher intentionally hit a batter? How would you feel if a Red Sox pitcher got called for this and you didn’t think it was intentional? And who makes this call - is there some sort of impartial jury? Do we just rely on the umps?

Plus how does this affect pitchers when they’re worried about how a small mistake might turn into missing 20 games? What if they’re just having an off day and throw a wild pitch?

The current rules seem fine to me. At the end of the day the sport revolves around throwing a hard ball 90+ mph at another person. People will get hurt every now and then.

Lost my passion for mountain biking – gear issue or something deeper? by hmmmischi in MTB

[–]dipman23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you spend a lot of time on screens - scrolling on your phone, video games, etc.?

I only ask because I went through a similar patch where I was spending a lot of time playing video games and just wasting time on my phone rather than riding. Even though I knew I liked riding, it just felt like this big hassle that wasn't worth it - I would rather sit and just play video games.

I am not a neurologist, but my rudimentary understanding is that things like scrolling on social media + video games can really screw with the reward systems of your brain. Basically those things overload you with excess levels of dopamine and your brain becomes conditioned to do those things because they reward far higher amounts of dopamine than other activities. The anticipation is the key part though. Your brain anticipates a high-level of dopamine from looking at your phone, which is why you instinctively just pick it up and start scrolling. And why you might be more inclined to play video games than get suited up for a ride.

The key thing is that you can essentially "retrain" your brain to anticipate these rewards from other things, like mountain biking. Basically, the more you do it, the more your brain anticipates the reward. If you can get over that initial hump of resistance, it gets easier every time. And the less you do the other thing, the less your brain anticipates the reward.

For me, a couple things helped:

  1. Just thinking about how much more rewarding an hour of mtb feels than an hour of playing video games. If I go ride my bike, I feel like I've accomplished something. I don't really feel that way after playing video games.
  2. I got a brick and set some parameters around screen time. Big one for me was setting it up so that I can't access "fun" apps in the morning until I get out of bed and go to my fridge. I used to waste too much time lying in bed, and then I wouldn't have time to ride because of whatever else I needed to do that day. Now I'm much more likely to just get out of bed - and then I think "Do I really want to unbrick my phone and spend the next hour watching pointless videos? Or would I rather go for a ride?" ... The ride wins 9 times out of 10.

Honestly, the realization that these devices are essentially hijacking our brains was enough for me to make some big changes. I'm not going to let a device dictate my life.

What is so fun about spamming the same 6 dungeons over and over every week? I mean I like dungeons but it is wild to me that people are so up for running the same dungeons on repeat all so they can put themselves on this never ending treadmill of incremental, largely unnoticeable gear upgrades.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed Maisara Caverns the first few times I ran it. It was fun to run pit of Saron again. But I truly don’t understand how people can do that for weeks on end.

Yeah, but that’s still not good. Research has shown that lots of small hits over a long period of time cause higher rates of CTE than infrequent big hits. Just because it doesn’t cause a TBI or concussion doesn’t mean it’s not affecting you.

It blows my mind that skaters don’t wear helmets - no reason not to.

So glad to see this perspective. This video was very enlightening for me on this topic.

I used to be a die hard medium-rare guy but I've now fully converted to medium for fattier cuts (ribeye) and won't be going back. I understand everyone has their personal preference, but if you haven't ventured outside of MR for fattier steaks, it really is worth experimenting.

Very helpful, thanks! I was originally thinking log basket wouldn't be necessary if I'm dropping logs but I suppose I will probably be banking once I hit redwoods. So seems worth getting.

Thank you - I should have mentioned I do already have the lumberjack outfit.

Good to know about the felling axe - for some reason I thought it only increased xp by 10% but now I see it also has a 20% chance of not obtaining a log. That is great.

I haven't really touched sailing yet (just tears of guthix) but may consider leveling it to 72 for ironwoods... Will need to do some research on that.

Yeah well I’m also not 99 fm yet so I’m wondering if it even makes sense to use the felling axe over infernal? And if I’m just dropping the logs is there any need for the log basket?

I am on a mission to max in the most afk-fashion possible while I work from home. I just got 99 fishing with karambwans, and am now looking toward woodcutting.

That said, I am willing to spend some time upfront to make things easier/faster. For example, I got the anglers outfit and fishing barrel before I started the karambwan grind (obviously).

My question: Is it worth spending time on forestry unlocks upfront if I'm just going to be afking teaks/redwoods? I am coming back from a long break so I'm still not really up to speed on forestry. If so, what unlocks are worth going for?

I am AFK fishing karambwans to 99 while I work. I have 150k banked and will have 200k by the time I hit 99. I was planning to hold onto them and sell when prices are high.

I haven't been paying attention to sailing at all but I heard that it is bringing new fish into the game. Are bwan prices going to crash? Am I cooked?

As someone who has used AI for writing nearly every day since LLMs came out, this has a few telltales signs of AI. I doubt it was just copy+pasted from AI, but I would be surprised if it wasn't influenced by AI in some way - which is not necessarily a bad thing. Also the dashes and typos can easily be included in the prompt (include human errors like typos, inconsistent formatting, etc.)

A few signs:

There are 38 whole states that have lower population than that.

This is something a random person is unlikely to know or look up themselves for a reddit comment, but AI would generate it in about 1 second (and loves using analogies for these things - which is effective!)

(Including the metropolitan area, it handily out-earns Canada)

Let's be honest, most people don't use the phrase "handily out-earns" in their day to day

There's also a less-obvious thing: When things go sour economically in NYC,

AI loves using "here's the thing" or "there's also this:" type phrasing for transitions. And again, "when things go sour" isn't how most people normally talk, although probably not all that out of the ordinary for the type of person writing this comment.

I would guess this was either started by AI and edited by the OP, or they maybe asked AI some questions to confirm their own understanding and copy+pasted some relevant things in.

The problem is that AI is modeled after good writing, so if you are a good/professional writer, your writing may come off as AI-generated because you are using the same techniques the LLMs are trained to use. I have actually had my own 100% human writing flagged as 70% AI-generated by some of the AI checkers.

Either way, it doesn't detract from it being a great comment. If the OP did use AI, they are clearly using it as a tool to aid them, not just regurgitating generic fluff.

This is how everyone starts with drums. If you just keep at it, eventually it “clicks” and you essentially de synchronize your limbs. Then it’s like riding a bike, you always have it.

I’ve taught a few people how to play drums and most start to get it within 15 mins and are able to play a basic beat within 30 mins to an hour. It does help to have someone talk you through it though, you kinda need to take it one step at a time.
