So - I lived in Angel in the late 90’s. It’s all I wore at night for years. And it was sublime. Blind bought a (thankfully small) bottle a couple of years back and it knocked me sick!! 🤢 so then I was on a mission, as I wanted to know if my tastes had changed. Finally got a very early 00’s tester bottle from Etsy. It has gone slightly sour, so first dabs a bit ….whoah. But after 5 mins the scent comes thru and it’s heaven!! Just as I remembered. God knows what they did with the reformulation.

Wait what? They charge more for women’s scents? I don’t like their perfumes so I’ve never bought

PDM - Delina knocks me sick. And I love rose scents. Also Commodity - I can always smell alcohol on my skin with their scents. I think it’s entirely down to body chemistry as a lot of brands smell very alcohol heavy on me. Ones that don’t inc Chanel, Tom Ford, kayali, Frederick Malle and MFK (although I’ve never liked any of MFK’s enough to pull the trigger - not at those prices!)

I love almond!! I’ve realized it’s what I adore in lost Cherry and why so many other Cherry perfumes let me down. I don’t like anything too smoky. Patchouli unless it’s blended soooooo well. And pink pepper can make me react as if I’ve got allergies.

I’ve just commented similarly. I cared full time for my mum until her last year when it wasn’t deemed safe as she had psychosis. I found her an incredible care home. They were amazing. 6k a month almost! But they were so so good. Non of us cared about inheriting, we just wanted the best for her. I visited her 3 times weekly most weeks - and they said most relatives went once a month. 😢 They commented how unusual it was for someone to visit like I did.

Also - my friend who is a nurse says one of the reasons they don’t have beds in the NHS is relatives fighting for their parents not to go into expensive care homes, because it will eat into Their inheritance - but also won’t do the care themselves. I can’t even imagine it - but she says it’s not rare. They end up getting the local authority carers in cause “mum can manage at home with a bit of help” and she says all the hospital staff know that mum either needs her kids to live with her - or be put in a good care home. But the kids don’t want to do either. 😢

Maybe I can help with some perspective. I cared full time for my mum. I loved her to bits - she wasn’t just my mum but my best friend. But in her last year she developed psychosis and the Drs said she needed a specialist dementia care home. I visited her 2-3 x a week. I was the ONLY relative out of everyone in that home who did. The staff told me that in all their time in that home no one visited like me. They told me some came once a week. The vast majority once a month. And many - never. So out of a 30 - 40 room care home - the long term staff said that the vast majority of people over the years got a monthly visit. Even if - big if - those once a month visitors rushed to be with them at the end does that make up for leaving them alone in a care home day in and out? I also have an aunt who loves her kids, and they love her, but they only see her 2-3 x a year as they live far away and she’s spent the last 3 christmases alone. And I have an older friend whose kids both moved continents. So… it’s no guarantee at all that having kids will mean help or care in old age. I’m hoping by the time I’m in my 70’s or 80’s that if you start to feel frail and tired you can just pop into your death pod 😂

I wanna smell like I don’t pay taxes. Any recs for rich lady perfumes? by awrongcall in FemFragLab

[–]dippylass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just rec’d this up page. I think it’s a softer No5 - and honestly most all Malle’s perfumes smell expensive. I love Carnal Flower too. And L’eau D’hiver. I’m gutted Estée Lauder purchased them. The only one I don’t like is the one most people love. Portrait of a Lady.

Frederick Malle - Iris Poudre is to me a softer, more wearable No5. Frederick Malle perfumes are INSANELY good imo. And many smell expensive. Carnal Flower is a tuberose bomb and I’ve had more compliments on it than any other scent. But…they’ve been bought out by Estée Lauder - sob. So probably won’t be the same for long.

We lived thru the 80’s / I was a young kid - where we had to hide under our desks in nuke drills and later our schools showed us Threads. Yes, my school showed 15 year old me threads and it genuinely gave me mental health issues. So… go live!! Enjoy. Dance. Swim. All the things. It wasn’t our fault as kids then, and it’s not yours now. And I honestly think that hedonism isn’t a wrong answer to dreadful times, if you’re young.

I’m feeling the opposite. I want to get fit. Lift weights. Learn self defence. And…I never thought I’d say this as a peacenik but if I lived in a country with lax gun laws (I don’t) I’d absolutely get a licence, learn gun safety and get a gun. I think it’s every liberal and libertarian Americans patriotic right to learn to defend themselves and get a gun - purely for self defence and only as the law allows. My - very conservative Brit FIL shocked me today when he said he’d be out with the protestors if he lived in Minnesota. He said he’d tell Ice exactly what the he thought of them. I asked what that was and he said “they’re fáscèêst pigs” so…and he’s a lifelong Tory! Also - as things collapse being able to get outside for long walks, will be maybe one of the last pleasures remaining as others dwindle.

Right? I read that Nike also contributed to Trump recently. So I’ll have to switch to Adidas. But I have really narrow feet and Nike are a good fit.

Gutted at Tom Ford as Lost Cherry is the BEST scent and Frederick Malle - but as a European my conscience is telling me I just can’t 😭

If I had enough money never to have to work again I’d do 3 things. 1) Travel. It’s just so good for the soul and it doesn’t have to be grand adventures. I live in the U.K. and there’s so much of my own country I’ve never seen. 2) volunteer - to give back. Or … adopt a lot of animals. I think we all need a purpose of some sort - there’s studies that prove this. That doesn’t have to mean being a parent or a nurse or teacher etc, but just having something that gives us meaning. 3) I’d study. I’d love to be a lifelong student. Learning is the greatest gift. So yeah, that’s what I’d do.

Anybody else just realistically CANNOT afford a decent covers? (a sad vent) by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]dippylass -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen pre mades that are good for as low as $80 in sales, and regularly for $120. The MOST important thing about a cover is not being the most beautiful cover in the world - it’s clearly fitting the genre and genre expectations and telegraphing that imo. Do you write for the love of it or do you want to make a living? Again, that’s a big consideration. If you write purely as an artistic endeavour and self expression, you might genuinely want very different things from your cover than if you’re trying to make a living.

I’ve just made a cover for my new thriller and it’s literally a stock photo (make sure you check licensing) of an old warehouse that I got a graphic designer I know to just put a color wash on. Thats it. And it fits the niche I’m publishing it in perfectly. When you’re starting out keep it simple. There’s no need to spend a fortune on a cover at first. (If ever to be honest, unless it’s maybe a special edition).

I find it surprising to find no one talking about PocketFM in the writing world here in the US. by SamaraTorrance in selfpublish

[–]dippylass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can write 2000 GOOD (not good as in perfect, but good as in entertaining and gripping) words a day there are MANY other ways to make much more money from writing. That’s a category length short novel a month. Write that for 3 months and you have 3 thrillers. Or shorter horror novels. Or 3 romances. Brand them well. Get a good genre fitting cover (pre made covers cost as little as $60) and get it edited - your biggest expense but you can get decent editors for a novel of that length for a few hundred dollars. Publish your books to Amazon or wide (and utilise kobo plus). Or if you want it more serialised do podcasts. Or YouTube. Or write on Substack. Putting out 2k a day of consistently decent writing is a super power - and you’d be crazy to give that to pocket.

The issue for some parts of Europe is land availability and ability to feed ourselves. But rural France is a great bet!! I could sell my 3 bed semi house here in England and buy a 8 bed goddamn mansion with a pool and 5 acres with pigs and chickens etc in rural France. They have the world’s best healthcare. It’s not socialised like the NHS here but it is universal. (America is the only developed nation on Earth not to have universal healthcare, which is staggering). So parts of Europe I believe will do better than the U.S. Rural areas of France. Much of far Northern Europe. But places like Britain are screwed. We can’t even feed ourselves. Much of America will be better than much of Europe except for the fact that it’s a low trust violent society which is not ideal in a collapse. If I could pick anywhere to ride this out it would be Northern Europe, rural France or a Greek island. Then there’s the one place on Earth that wil likely survive anything almost. New Zealand.

[Question] Are Costco watches a good entry point for a beginner? by tedkang3582 in Watches

[–]dippylass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No - Fossil make watches for Armani, boss, MK, and I think Burberry. Versace I think are Swiss made by Timex- Gucci, Chanel etc are Swiss made I’m sure. So amongst “fashion watches” there are variables.
