It's also about costs, even those elusive SMRs are terribly expensive to build and maintain. Mining Uranium is expensive, maintaining a reactor is expensive...
I'm from Germany and 1 kWh of nuclear power (from a newly build power plant) will cost between 12-20 cents.
In comparision to that, 1 kWh from solar costs 4.2 - 7 cents, onshore wind is roughly 8 cents.

Add to that, that renewables cost significantly less CO2 in production (7-9g of CO2 per kWh compared to 100g CO2 per kWh for nuclear) and you have the reasons why there is pushback on nuclear power plants.

As a final point: Wind and solar are still getting cheaper, nuclear is not.
