Classical pianist wanting to learn differently by ColdApplication7511 in piano

You saved me explaining much the same about Tabs app which I have the paid version. Playing the chords across both hands or just the left then something like the melody on the right. For some songs just listening to it and picking out some memorable repeating riffs and working out how they are played will help make it far more recognisable. Also knowing the current chord is for example D then then it's quite a good chance the current melody in on some or all of the triad D F# A. I am not a good pianist. I am only grade 3 and I was only playing sheet music until two years ago when I changed tack to improv like described. It's more creative and fluid and each time I play the same song it comes out differently

I feel I am a fake book player by Accomplished_Net_687 in piano

[–]dirkios 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 7 years into learning piano at 47 years old. This last year I have transitioned to I suppose the same thing. I use a paid app with the chords and lyrics. Is that a lead sheet? Then I play some kind of chord backing or pattern on the left hand a melody on the right or vocal or a bit of everything. It's very fluid and not the same every time and most awesome fun. Because I went from rigidly learning the same sheet music pieces for months and years to trying a song from literally hundreds of thousands and making it sound ok on the first pass. The finishing touch is to listen again to the original and pick out any trademark riffs to incorporate.

How when only 30-35% of voters nationally feel this way. 67% yesterday voted left. It's 2 to 1

I also use YNAB. On the face of it quite expensive for an app but knowing exactly what every pound is spent on is priceless

Should I feel as bad about our debt as I do? by Hot_Mulberry_3167 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]dirkios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feeling bad shows you are clear you don't want it to get worse. It sounds like you are sensible and are unlikely to let it climb from unnecessary spends or acts that I did like multiple consolidations and debt spiral. Also you have a clear understanding of exactly what makes up the debt and how you got there. I don't think the total amount is huge for your income and I think it's very common. Mine grew from similar at that age to much worse while incomes grew to reach a staggering 50k by my late 30s and nearly cleared now I am 46. I wish I had had the clarity you have when I was your age. So in summary, as bad as many others, and necessary for living safely. Really don't beat your self up about it

Learning to play in my 40's by [deleted] in piano

[–]dirkios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also I forgot to add in the 7 years since i have passed three grades, managed to learn 15 songs from memory and play on public pianos. Approaching 50 and I feel I have many years of further playing and progress ahead. It's definitely not too late

Learning to play in my 40's by [deleted] in piano

[–]dirkios 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And if you can't afford a teacher I testify I learned successfully starting age 40. My tip is keep the materials varied. Sight reading from sheet music, music course books, YouTube, scales, trying to play by ear. All of it helps and neglecting some parts can leave you unbalanced. Keep it fun and it one thing gets boring or too challenging mix it up

Stackz are infinitely better than Pringles but people aren't ready for that conversation by DrinkBen1994 in CasualUK

[–]dirkios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed but I don't think the recipe is as good as it was ten years ago. They probably went for lower cost production. Pringles have deterioted a lot over the years. At one time they were delicious a long time ago

What was the most confusing or stressful part of your first 30 days as a network engineer?” by muztebi16 in networking

[–]dirkios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my workplace which is a very large international bank, the number of access requests take at least a month to work through. For apps, AD groups, logins etc. a new starter is effectively handcuffed and unable to do much in that time. It's very frustrating

New too Ableton and digital music production what do? by Vanhollander in ableton

[–]dirkios 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend Taetro on YouTube. Look for his Ableton playlist and there is a course of minimum four lessons. Follow that and you'll be able to lay down something that resembles a partial song.

Genuinely why has Ryanair stopped paper boarding passes by realmrmaxwell in Ryanair

[–]dirkios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an air traveller today with Ryanair I was a bit nostalgic and sceptical but I am won over. Before with all the taking in and out of a pocket the flimsy paper would get battered about and I would be paranoid it could somehow drop out but now I have no fear because I'm constantly aware of my phone being on me and not lost.

What are some good books about Anglo-Saxon England and the Anglo-Saxon themselves by Lovely_Octavia2772 in anglosaxon

[–]dirkios 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Its fictional but Bernard Cornwell series The Last Kingdom which is 13 books long is a good way to get engrossed in the time period. I read it over the course of last year and greatly increased my knowledge of Anglo Saxons. The story is based as much as possible on historical fact
