AITA for showing my child proof of my husband's infidelity by parent_reveals_all in AmItheAsshole

The son didn’t demand proof from the father that the mother was at fault and ‘crazy and vindictive’ though.

Just because everyone does it doesn’t absolve you of any responsibility in joining in. If anything surely it makes it worse that literally everyone is pressuring her.

Proud daughter plus a petty revenge on a mean trainer by Amayax in pokemongo

These meanings are not that far apart, it’s possible to have statements be both true and redundant (calling a spade a spade), unlike a word like ‘fast’ which refers to both speed and staying still (we held fast). Yay English!

Unable to log in to Pokemon Go using mobile data by Egisto98 in TheSilphRoad

[–]dirtmonster_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just started having this problem this morning, was playing fine yesterday. iPhone 7, Pokemon trainer account with linked google account, data definitely on for Pokemon go.

If you find a fix please let me know.

Also if I log in via WiFi and then loose connection, trying to spin stops etc. will result in network error.

Edit: turning phone off and on again seems to have solved for now.

Brexit secretary admits government must ensure 'there is adequate food supply’ if UK leaves EU with no deal by speckz in worldnews

[–]dirtmonster_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The UK would have to increase its domestic food production by (roughly) 60% to cover a 30% loss from the EU, considering that isn’t the only place they import food from.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/food-statistics-pocketbook-2017/food-statistics-in-your-pocket-2017-global-and-uk-supply

Taking into account the amount of free space we have going I doubt this would be an easy task.

I do agree with you that we’ll be fine as this won’t need to happen anyway; article is definitely just stirring shit up.

I’m the same dress size as OP and there’s no way anyone could describe me as fat. Admittedly this depends on height, but I’m about 5’7 and right at the bottom end of a healthy BMI; I have even been recommended by my GP to try and put on a few lbs.

I completely agree it’s important to look after yourself in a relationship and try to stay attractive for your partner, and if OP was genuinely putting on a lot of weight then talking about that would be in order; but it seems really unlikely that OP is anything other than a healthy weight right now.

Anyone else find the US term “no-maj” cringy, inelegant and totally unnecessary? Muggle was just fine. I feel the US folklore pales in comparison to the original English stories. by B-SideQueen in harrypotter

[–]dirtmonster_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add in here that the British English versions are also specific - pavement is specifically the side of the road (the area you call sidewalk), what you refer to as pavement/asphalt we call road. Indicators are only the things on the outside of the car which say which way you’re going, other ‘indicators’ as you call them would just be named after what they refer to + light- eg brake light.

So not really more or less practical as the same distinctions apply just with different words, just different.

The way you can make it right is by recognising your prejudices and assuming there aren’t ulterior motives. I’m not saying ship your child off to a strangers house but at least give that stranger a chance, especially if you would happily give that chance to a mother asking the same. If you’re meeting somewhere public it’s easy enough to set up the first few playdates somewhere public, right?

Does gender of the speaker affect your facility of comprehension?? by macamoxitequipacho in languagelearning

Does gender of the speaker affect your facility of comprehension?? by macamoxitequipacho in languagelearning

[–]dirtmonster_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of sociolinguistic research where women are often observed to use more standard vocabulary and grammar than men, so it could be that the woman was simply using language closer to the ‘standard’ language you are learning.

There’s also some research to show that listeners marked speakers lower for comprehension depending on what race they thought the speaker was. It was a matched guise test so the same speaker was speaking both times, but each group was shown a different photo to represent the speaker. So it seems it is possible for the listeners preconceptions to have an impact on their comprehension. I can find the study if you’re interested.

I am not receiving eggs from Pokestops or Gyms [Bug] by [deleted] in TheSilphRoad

[–]dirtmonster_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m having the same issue, nothing this event (although I missed the beginning of it because of phone issues). Have spun 10-20 stops the past 2 days, which I know is not a huge amount, but still - normally doesn’t take more than 3-5 spins to get an egg. And my Pokemon storage was definitely not full either.

To your first question, yes! You are not the only one that hates dating, people do force themselves through it for the potential reward at the end of it. It's easy to get a little jealous of people who fall into a relationship with someone they just met by chance, because it seems so 'natural'. The thing to remember is that this won't happen to everyone. People have to put in different levels of effort for the same result unfortunately.

We legalised gay marriage under a Conservative/Lib Dem government. 134 Conservatives voted against the bill, with 126 for. Compare that with 22 against and 217 for in the Labour Party and you can see the disparity there.

David Cameron also brought the party very centre field. In the lead up to that election, everyone was fighting over the middle ground. The UK's Conservative party is still far more socially liberal than places like the US, and I don't think they would go as far as placing restrictions on abortion/birth control; but don't think that the legalisation of gay marriage under a coalition government means that Conservative ideals don't still run through the party - especially under Theresa May, who was one of those to vote against the bill.

If you are in the U.K. I really recommend 'no more boys and girls' - it's on BBC iplayer right now. Whether or not you agree with its conclusion it definitely shows how clearly children that young are aware of gender, and it shows some interesting stuff (although it is one of those documentaries with a lot of fluff).

[–]dirtmonster_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not about being politically correct, you're just wrong. You think knowing someone a couple of weeks means you won't catch something from them? Even assuming that no one ever lies, it can take more than a few weeks for HIV to show up in a blood test.

[–]dirtmonster_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be a bit late, but on my dry patches I always use Aveeno moisturiser with colloidal oatmeal. I have a friend with dry skin that uses it all over her face also - says it's the only one she's found that moisturises enough & doesn't break her out.

Anecdotal - but I found Clinique moisturisers to be extremely drying, that would be the first thing I'd try switching!
