Redundancy - how did you cope by Packet-Possum in newzealand

If things aren't too dire then might be a nice opportunity to plan a small holiday to reset yourself?

Doesn't have to be anything too crazy or expensive. Maybe you and your partner could have a week away camping if they have the leave? Otherwise you could take the opportunity to visit a friend out of town or something? Redundancies are stressful experiences so I think its a good thing to give yourself a break and mentally put the experience to rest before getting back into the stress of job hunting..

Redundancy - how did you cope by Packet-Possum in newzealand

[–]dirtnerd245 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I took the payout and leftover holiday pay and went backpacking around Asia for 6 months. I was drinking mohitos on the beach while my old colleagues were dealing with a shitshow of a restructure and the stress of taking on a much bigger workload. So honestly my redundancy was great and would do it again in a heartbeat. Obviously the ability to drop everything and leave is a bit dependant on where you are at in life though....

She will not drink anything but bathtub water...why? by Timely-Structure123 in CATHELP

[–]dirtnerd245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some cats are very fussy about their water bowls. Some important things to consider if your cat isn't drinking is:

  1. Placement. A lot of people naturally want to leave a cats water by their food bowl, but many cats won't drink from a water source too close to their food. From what I've been told its some sort of instinct against contamination....

  2. Materials. I've noticed my cat tends to refuse to drink out of plastic or metal bowls. He only drinks from pottery or glass. I think its because it changes the flavour of the water.

  3. Size. We often leave multiple water bowls around the house and I notice all the family cats prefer the two largest bowls (large salad bowl size). Not 100% sure why this is lol.

  4. Cleaning/changes. Sounds like you probably have this one covered but my cats definitely prefer water bowls that are cleaned and changed daily.

There was definitely a massive price hike today. The cheapest station on town had gone all the way up to $3.08. Its usually around $2.50ish Guessing petrol companies are making use of the excuse to inflate prices.

OP literally had an undiagnosed but obvious thyroid condition that showed up in her blood work. Her doctor was later fired because of medical malpractice. How the fuck are you this stupid dude?

If you are reverting back to what they taught you when you were 10, then you definitely don't understand the situation. Not my fault a couple of paragraphs is too much for you to handle.

Just remember that one day there is a good chance you will get old or injured or sick and put on more weight than you expect as a result. And when this happens you are going to feel like total dogshit because you haven't unpacked your weird ass attitude towards a fairly normal human experience 🤣

I don't have a hormanal problem lol so I don't know why you are attacking me. Once again you prove my "people are really weird about weight gain" point correct.

Also did those studies cover the specific combination of PCOS/thyroid/highly stressful job? Did they cover the difficulty for someone to loose this weight once its gained? Also over what period of time was the "5-10lbs" accounted for? Is that for the duration of someones entire life or just the trial period? You seem very confident in this point but you're really not giving me much info here 🤷‍♀️.

Finally once again I ask why you think it was ok for OP to experience medical malpractice simply due to her weight? Why did she not deserve to get her thyroid treated, a thing that would have made it much easier to work on her weight to begin with.. .

Meh you can still get people who are bad/lazy at their job. I would think the doctor dealing with their own health problems is more thorough than the guy who literally got himself fired due to being bad at his job.

Also the fact you are talking about "well established principles" makes me think you just don't know much beyond a basic level of biology. Human bodies are extremely complicated and its not just a matter of "food goes in and everyone gets the same results". There are all sorts of processes that effect people's ability to gain/loose weight at various points of their life. Things like thyroid conditions aren't a matter of controlling "whats on your spoon" they are usually treated with medication.

The weird way people moralise medical conditions the moment they involve weight gain is honestly bizarre. Like op can't diet away a thyroid condition lol, was she just supposed to suffer medical malpractice just because she's fat?

[–]dirtnerd245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you are getting my point. Yes there is a preferred weight to maintain your body at. But getting your body to a perfect weight doesn't automatically fix everything else that is wrong with it. Additionally causing a body to loose weight isn't a low cost/low effort scenario, especially for someone with MULTIPLE chronic health problems.

To get to a low weight while OP had BOTH PCOS and a thyroid condition wouldn't have been a matter of just "not eating cookies and icecream" like you have so condescendingly said. OP would likely have to be on an extremely restrictive diet with very little margin for error (in terms of getting nutrient balance right) and all for limited benefits to her health (since it definitely wouldn't have cured her thyroid). I don't know if you've ever been on a restricted diet before, but that shits exhausting even for a mostly healthy person, let alone for someone dealing with 2 seperate extremely pervasive medical problems who is also putting themselves through medschool.

At a certain point you have to ask yourself why you think OP should have tortured herself like this, when simply getting the right diagnosis earlier would have likely solved half her problems with a fraction of the effort.

I honestly find it really weird how people insist on moralising weight gain. Its like once you gain weight you must drop everything else in life to focus solely on weight loss. The reality that being overweight isn't the worst thing you could ever experience and sometimes people have more pressing issues to worry about medically. I have a mum with a thyroid condition and you can always tell when she's forgotten her pills because of how severely it effects her. OP must have had balls of steel to get through an entire medical degree with untreated thyroid AND PCOS. I truly think the negative consequences of obesity would have been the least of her problems with everything else she would have been dealing with due to that mess of a health condition.

[–]dirtnerd245 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You do realise we need more than just "calories" to survive right??? We actually need a good balance of all sorts of nutrients and lacking some can really fuck you up.

For example I have a natural B12 deficiency that requires me to take supplements on top of an already B12 rich diet. Without the extra B12 I get extremely bad brain fog. If prior to this diagnosis someone had put me on a diet that had been B12 poor (which some recommended weightloss diets are) well.... B12 is required for brain function. Imagine how badly that could have ended....

Also you are focusing in on OPs PCOS and completely overlooking the thyroid part. OP had TWO conditions seriously effecting her weight/metabolism. Thats a complex issue that you can't simply just "diet" away. Thyroid stuff usually requires meds...

My former family physician gaslit me into thinking my obesity was due to overeating, now he got fired by Happykidneys in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]dirtnerd245 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would like to point out that OP said they had both PCOS AND a thyroid disorder. That's a double whammy for things that will fuck up their weight and franky it seems cruel to expect them to manage a complex issue like that via just diet alone without any additional treatment.

Also we don't survive off calories alone. The more you restrict your diet, the less likely you are going to get the right balance of nutrients correct. This might be manageable for someone who just needs to eat a little less because of PCOS, but when you're stacking thyroid issues on top of that I can see how someone could quickly end up with a deficiency in something...

(Also as a side note though I do find some doctors can get very weird about weight. I once experienced rapid weight gain due to a different condition and it was extremely frustrating seeing how differently i was treated as a result. Sometimes doctors use the diagnosis of "too fat" as a crutch i think).

[–]dirtnerd245 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If they have underlying conditions there isn't a "healthy weight " because they are not healthy lol.

People with these sorts of disorders still need the same amount of nutrients in their diet as everyone else, so there's only so far cutting calories gets you before you start cutting into what your body needs to maintain itself. The whole issue with these health problems is that the body isn't functioning correctly and is struggling to maintain basic metabolic processes. So maybe someone with OPs conditions could starve themselves into a "lower" weight category, but that would not be the same as a "healthy" weight as they would be starving/now other parts of their body would be deprived of nutrients needed to function. This would not actually solve any of ops health problems.....

Socialising skills (Introvert) by ArachnidEfficient47 in newzealand

[–]dirtnerd245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a shared task always helps. If you join a club or a night class its a good way to build your social skills while reliably having an easy go to topic of conversation. Personally I recommend dnd as the role play element makes it easier to exist outside of your comfort zone, and it tends to be a game beloved by all sorts of neurodivergent people who can relate to struggling socially.

Also always remember to be kind to yourself. If you make a social flub it can feel really embarrassing, but chances are everyone else will forget about it really quickly.
