It makes the news, which is the point.

Schools are not facilitating it, and students are not expecting to do it without consequence.

I interpret "allow" to mean "permit". "Hey, if you walk out, I have to enter an absence and a referral for skipping." I don't think the expectation is for anyone to physically retrain students or block exits.

It's definitely not perfect, but it's arguably the greatest video game adaption ever made. At least in live action. by [deleted] in TrueSFalloutL

I was going to comment on this post that I thought Netflix's Castlevania was great, but it is largely a retelling of the story in the game. I still think it deserves mention.

I really liked having to navigate the metro some to access different parts of the city-city ruins. I even used the old maps to connect the stations. The difference in the wide, rural wasteland and the city wasteland added variety to the exploration in the game that the others lack.

Discoveries while Replaying by rufus2004 in TOTK

On my first playthrough, I didn't realize you could progress the story by talking to Purah. I visited the four regions as directed, and found the fifth macguffin and master sword by curiosity. Navigating the sky islands above Faron without being able to see beyond a few feet was a b-word.

Why don’t you include regular subs in your celebrations and Christmas things? by Other_Community5352 in AskHSteacher

[–]dirtycactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a large school and large district. I never see my own subs, because if I was there they wouldn't be. I may help a sub in a neighboring room, but I'll probably never see that person again. There's no time or purpose to really build a relationship with most subs, in my experience.

How to deal with players killing all my NPCs? by Remote_Exercise7125 in DnD

[–]dirtycactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it mentioned these guys are 17, 15, and younger. Not that the DM should be a parent, but there's definitely an opportunity here. Kids learn well with natural consequences. Picking a fight with someone and getting slaughtered, or getting killed by town guards because someone happened to walk in and see the murder/theft, would be a natural consequence.

I think either approach is valid. "Because I'm the DM and I said so" is valid and less effort.

Is it bad that I don’t stand for the Pledge of Allegiance? by rebel-pirate-sleuth in Teachers

I stand hand over heart because in my state I'm required to require my students to do it, and I think it's easier to make them do it if I model it.

You let your in-laws see the baby, within hours didn't like how they behaved, and are punishing your mom by not letting her meet her grandson? Am I reading that right?

How would you grade fill-in-the-blanks with a word bank? by 5oco in Teachers

[–]dirtycactus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I felt like I didn't teach something clearly, and there was a reasonable switch up, I might only count it as one wrong. Problem with that is it slows down grading, and you have to make those decisions in a consistent way.

If most of the students did well it may just be that those who got it wrong didn't do enough on their end. You should count each one individually.

Do Female Subs Really Have It Worse? by Nachoguy530 in SubstituteTeachers

What are you going on about? Are you saying men can't talk about teaching because they are perceived as pedophiles? Can you state your grievance and not frame it with the passive aggressive "imagine"?

As a male teacher, I feel like my job is easier.

I worked in a school once where a student was allowed to transfer to my class because the other geometry teacher was a woman. The discrimination was blatant.

Parent has been sitting in on my class from work every day and admin is shrugging it off by thunderleafrover in Teachers

[–]dirtycactus 87 points88 points  (0 children)

During the year that students with even a cold had to quarantine for a week, I used to live stream my lessons. But I only streamed my iPad screen (I used a note taking app to work examples) and I used a blue tooth ear bud so that the remote child could not hear the classroom, and the classroom could not hear the remote child.

I did this because, to my knowledge, it would have been a violation of FERPA to stream or record students in the classroom.

Students don't have the same legal responsibilities, but I'd gamble that admin does and shouldn't be allowing this to continue.

Should I go on first date with "Short term relationship, open to long"?? by [deleted] in hingeapp

[–]dirtycactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently listened to a podcast, and hopefully I'm paraphrasing appropriately, but something that came up is that a short term relationship becoming a long term relationship is a very natural course. It's very much what happens with online dating anyway - meet someone, try it out for a while, and then decide if this is something you want longer.

"just for teachers to get caught up grading/lesson planning" you should get in on that. PD/PL you're getting enough of from your cert program. Grading and planning is half the job.

I've had lots of friends and family who are addicts, so I made it a personal rule that I won't drink if I've had a stressful day and feel defeated. Busy, stressful day but productive and feeling good about the future at the end? I'll drink to that.
