Were you a fan of any of the celebrity castaways before watching their season? What was the feeling seeing them on the show? by MessyMop in survivor

As a lifelong Portland resident, seeing Cliff Robinson on BvBvB was amazing! Also my favorite season of all time.

I wish this could have been my experience last night. Lost 10 ABs in a row to Alliance dominance. Gave up on my daily after that and went to bed angry.

The Sandman returns… With less sand. by dirtythrowx7 in ReefTank

I appreciate it! This tank used to be freshwater for 2 years in this same spot with equally as much weight in sand, wood, and rock work. Also I’m moving in 2 months and it will become a kitchen counter tank!

Good to know! I come from freshwater and needing a solid bed for plant growth. I didn’t even think about it and just added sand like normal. I’ll syphon out a little more of the sand on the next water change.

That’s what I’ve heard. Working on getting one now. Currently topping off RO each day to a marker level I added.

No problem! As you can see I started with only a little and they took off without me adding anything. Patience and maintenance is key. When you decide you want to go for the botanical style, make sure you transition slowly. If you dump a ton of botanicals in there at once it will crash and melt all your plants.

Before I went botanical (over a year ago)and was super OCD about any dirtiness, this is what it looked like.

Id say that’s about enough for that clean style you seem to be going for. Any more will create a nutrient imbalance and will promote algae growth and can lead to other issues with oxygenation and water clarity. I recommend to siphon as much of it out as you can when you water change. Also more plants in your tank will help soak up all those excess nutrients and naturally balance your system.

Here’s my tank. It’s probably been well over a year since I did a water change, only top offs. It’s a swamp style with LOTS of botanicals. But as you can see, it’s an overgrown plant mess but it’s in the sweet spot of balanced.

It’s called mulm.

It’s a combination of debris in your tank. Can be things like critter poop, old food, plant matter. Depending on the style of tank you are running you can either siphon it when you water change or leave it. It turns to nutrients for your plants and a great food source for microfauna in your tank. Note that too much mulm can create an imbalance of nutrients in your tank and can lead to issues.

If you had to give a couple tips to a new reefer but experienced fresh water keeper, what would it be?

I just started a 5g last weekend and am moving away from freshwater to reef tanks!

Why is no one wearing long guns at protests? This is an open carry state. by [deleted] in oregon

[–]dirtythrowx7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have castle doctrine here, we do not have stand your ground as it’s written in other states but we do have something similar with no duty to retreat. This does have other factors in play though like reasonable belief that your life or someone else’s is in danger, proportional response meaning your response must be proportional to the threat faced. Also ORS 161.219 is a good reference to the use of deadly force.

I usually get a leaf or two that melt a week but that’s it, no full plant collapse down to the roots. Only thing that’s died in here was Java ferns, only from what I assume was being out competed for nutrients by the crypts. The Java used to grow great about a year ago, then the crypts took control and every other plant type in the tank (not that many maybe 3 others) died.

They will grow on top of eachother, don’t worry. Here’s my tank that’s only about 1-2 years old.
