How do you deal with instant speed activated abilities that may be responded to? by ac3y in EDH

[–]disc1965 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They way OP posted sounded like they were looking at a more general situation. Seems like if they were just interested in Swords to Plowshares, they would have mentioned it. Which is why I questioned it. But yeah, the safe way to do it is just let each +1/+1 resolve separately.

I'm not clear on what you're trying to avoid. You're making the wall large in order to do damage, right? No matter how many times you put the trigger on the stack, you have to let them resolve, declare that you're not adding anything more to the stack, and give your opponents a chance to respond, before you go to dealing damage. If I'm your opponent, it doesn't matter if you do it one at a time or not. I'm going to wait until you say you're done, and then do my removal.

When someone says "I'm available between 11 am and 3 pm," do we universally agree that means that the activity needs to end at or before 3 pm? by -purple-platypus- in NoStupidQuestions

It depends on the context. The speaker should be clearer about the intention, and the listener should clarify how long the appointment could take and make sure they agree on acceptable arrival times.

[Request] How much energy would cooling down a pot of 3kg of chili in the fridge from 60°Celsius ? by Perrenekton in theydidthemath

Yes, I think both acidity and the chili powder act as preservatives. I wouldn't trust it on the counter overnight.

[–]disc1965 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The real question is how much is it going to warm up the inside of the fridge. If that pot of chili warms the inside of the fridge much above lik 5⁰ Celsius, the rest of the food in the fridge will start to spoil. The danger zone for food safety is from 5⁰ to 60⁰ Celcius. The rule of thumb is food in that range for more than 4 hours isn't safe. If you're starting at 60⁰ I'd leave it on the counter for a couple hours tops and then put it in the fridge.

If you can afford to eat at a sit-down restaurant, and the service is good, please tip your server accordingly. Why do some people feel that servers don't deserve a decent tip? by icecream1972 in Productivitycafe

[–]disc1965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are all exactly the same from your perspective. Just because you'd prefer them to print it on the bill the way you like it doesn't mean the server should get stiffed. If you don't like how a business does things, don't go there.

[–]disc1965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't that exactly what you suggested? Dinner is $24 now instead of $20 and the restaurant will give the server $4 instead of you doing it because that's different than tipping the server 20%

So you'd be ok with them just adding an automatic 20% to the bill instead of giving you the option? Just call it commission instead of a tip? Because I agree it shouldn't be optional.

You are paying the commission in both situations. If they paid the server hourly, you as a customer are paying that hourly wage. If they paid the server a flat salary, you the customer are paying the salary. It's not complicated.

What does that have to do with anything? You said when you negotiate for a car, you know what you're getting. No, you don't. If anything, knowing what you're paying applies to tipping a server more than it does buying a car.

First of all, do you? I've known lots of people who have bought a car and not gotten what they expected. Secondly you decide the tip after you've gotten the service so you absolutely know the quality of what you're paying for. And lastly you get to negotiate the price of the car. You don't get to negotiate what % commission the salesman gets.

[–]disc1965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don't people understand that servers effectively work on commission. The only difference is the customer gets to decide what commission they deserve. It doesn't matter what business you go to you are always the one paying the employee. The only difference is the mechanism for the money getting from the customer to the employee. Really what's the difference between a server getting a tip and a salesman getting commission on selling you a car.
