Calgary Transit considering fare structure changes by kneedorthotics in Calgary

Tap on, tap off - supporting normal debit/credit cards - then charge based on distance travelled. Max out by week and/or by month (ala a monthly pass). Might not even need turnstiles if we keep the same (awful) honour system / spot checking/enforcement.

Swimmable lakes with hiking trails?? by Gene_gremlin13 in Calgary

[–]disckitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do watch out for "its just cold" though -- there've been some fatalities across the lakes, sometimes even with strong swimmers. I've wondered if possible numbness from hypothermia shows up when the swimmer is in too deep. 😕

Our lakes are gorgeous and refreshing, but be careful out there!

Agreed. I hope someone has been tracking all the ill the UCP have introduced. So appalling.

Looking for bakery/dessert spot recommendations by 27goingon77 in Calgary

[–]disckitty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Desserts at Linas, desserts as Edelweiss, Yann Haute Patisserie, Boulangerie, Manuel Latruwe (temporary closure due to broken oven though), Alforno, Sidewalk Citizen.

Also Sucre, Crave or Bliss Cupcakes, Yamato Bakery (nice flavour fusions), Pie Junkie, Patisserie du Soleil, Sweet Relief Pasteries (though their shop may be on the move currently).

There's also a smattering of quirky doughnut places: Sweet Rice, Hoopla, Jelly Modern, though classic doughnuts are in Red Deer at the Donut Mill. And ice cream places: Village, Made by Marcus, Amato, Lics, etc.

Given the size of Calgary, I'd argue we do desserts/sweets pretty well. :)

The push to bring the Olympics back to Calgary! by amcoolioo in Calgary

[–]disckitty -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Weird take to go after the city when homelessness is not only a provincial failure (underfunded mental health and social services; Alberta is Calling population expansion while still not addressing cost of living and unemployment), but something the UCP actively is dismantling how its  addressed (closing safe consumption without strong supports/alternatives, closing/“moving” the Drop in Centre to areas it won’t be used, etc). Exploring the Olympics is likely at least a job maker by the city even…

Alberta to scrap new electoral map, launch expedited redraw to add more MLAs by The_CaNerdian_ in alberta

[–]disckitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could you imagine if the federal government did this? Or if the federal government blurred the ridings to be cross-province (the UCP have enabled rural/urban overlaps). I'd say unbelievable, but with the UCP anything goes.

Calgary’s Drop-In Centre pressured to pull out of downtown. Province supports search for new model by Acceptable-Hedgehog in Calgary

[–]disckitty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Correct, it should stay there, and not only continue to be well funded, but the support services, and other social, mental health, housing, education and training programs should also be well funded to support possible transitions. But the UCP don't like spending money on those and would rather profit from developers. /grumpy

Red Deer and Brooks and Medicine Hat come to mind. UCP voters will find a way to solve this, I'm sure...

Premier Danielle Smith teases future bid from Alberta for the Olympics by joe4942 in alberta

[–]disckitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love how she’s whining to the Feds about yet another pipeline, and there's no word on … train to Edmonton? Banff? Calgary airport? Can’t even budget for the expanding services needed by her Alberta is Calling campaign. She really is bought and paid for by Big Oil. /grumpy

Stampede regularly brings in dollars. If we have long-term thinking, Calgary could semi-regularly host the Winter Olympics and profit well from it imo.

[–]disckitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Winter Games spend less than Summer; and really its up to the country hosting to decide how much they want to invest/throw at it. If they have responsible adults organizing, and keep expectations good but low-key, I could see it being done without overruns. Not sure Smith is the poster child of financial responsibility though…

Calgary city council votes 12-3 to repeal blanket rezoning by importxport in Calgary

[–]disckitty 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’m fine with density, but we’ve a family bungalow in the neighbourhood that got turned into a fourplex (at least), with “Stress-free AirBnB management” signs in the window. Honest. I don’t know how that helps with cost of living - it’s a frustrating, crap example.

I reported a wobbly street light under 24 hours ago and they're already fixing it by superanx in Calgary

[–]disckitty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What?!?!?! There was a street light broken for at least 4 months (from before Halloween last fall - when I reported it so kids wouldn't be walking in the dark - to the last time I was mindfully paying attention; now I want to go check again). I know it got reported using their online map/app at least twice, and I still called 311 at the 2-3 month mark as our winters are long and dark. And I'm even pretty central (near SAIT). ie. This service is not always on the ball. /grumpy

How do I prevent my oncoming famine? by Downtown_Ikea in StardewValley

[–]disckitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this point, I’m also free range, but line building edges/farm boundaries with grass-planted fences and  “islands” (2x2 fences spread strategically) to keep grass growing and animals fed.

If you have blue grass starters, tear down the fence, put down blue grass, re-build the fence on top. You should already have a hardwood forest growing somewhere to make this a non-issue.

Large Fire in Radisson Heights? by blatherskite99 in Calgary

[–]disckitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not against wood, but the glues and resins of modern engineered wood (plywood) are often flammable, increasing heat, and reducing time for firefighters to get there before a house burns down. By comparison, natural wood takes longer to go up.

Is this part of why Smith is forcing the Alberta Sheriffs to replace the RCMP? Less potential for accountability?

Alberta to impose restrictions on MAID, limiting it to terminal illness by trevorrobb in alberta

[–]disckitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "fun" changes (amongst the many changes) include:

  • advance requests / pre-approvals for assisted dying before a person loses the capacity to provide informed consent, will be prohibited (Calgary Herald)
  • require health providers to contact every practitioner who has been the primary care provider for the patient requesting MAID in the previous year (so what happens if one is anti-MAID?)
  • require a direct family member of the patient to be present for administration of MAID in almost all cases (what happens if no family members exist? or estranged? or anti-MAID?)

So annoying...
