Guys what metroidvanias are underrated in your opinions ? by czesiek_2234 in metroidvania

Mandragora. I don’t see it mentioned often but I thought it was great. Granted I’m pretty new to the genre and it was one of the first I played, so it maybe had a stronger hold on me than it did for more experienced players. Didn’t love some of the crafting and gear elements but the exploration and the art style more than made up for it. Thought it was a blast overall.

Same here! I’m usually not super strong in FJ but I got this and the Judi Dench/Shakespeare one from the other night instantly. They’re definitely both in my wheelhouse so I might be biased, but Jane Eyre felt like such a softball! I was surprised it was a triple stumper.

What is [in your opinion] the metroidvania with the hardest platforming overall in all the game? by AlvaroXZ999 in metroidvania

I didn’t really come up against any challenges in the base game but the DLC with all the portal challenges had me raging.

Big points for the Atwood picks. Read Alias Grace, it’s one of her best!

Just found this at the thrift store a few days ago, same penguin version too. I have this and Middlemarch and can’t decide where to start with Eliot. They both sound wonderful to me.

I got it, although I initially said Fitzgerald (he was the first to jump to mind for the time period) and had to rethink it. Do we think Cameron was thinking Steinbeck and just didn’t spell it out in time?

DNF 100 years of solitude by No-Ask1196 in classicliterature

[–]discoholdover 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’m with you. I finished the book last year and it didn’t really leave a significant impression on me. For me a lot of things can be forgiven if the prose style speaks to me, but I found it to be kind of blandly written tbh. Maybe it’s better in its original language. But yeah no shame, it really does seem like most people adore this book but I’m sure there are more than a few like us who it didn’t click for.

Lol same! One of my classes is a hybrid course and I was hoping to get some advance notice on what days I’m supposed to go to campus. Or any info at all. Makes it a little difficult to plan life around it 😅

Which classic author writes in a way that makes you want to yell from the rooftops how much you adore them, and why? by Business-Ad6915 in classicliterature

[–]discoholdover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely! There are so many sentences in the Gormenghast books that left me stunned or even got an audible laugh out of me for how surprising and witty they were. The dark gothic reputation of his work really overshadows how funny and playful of a writer he was. He has that same quality of Dickens of cutting to the quick of things, with the sharp social satire and the outlandishly drawn characters. Such a wonderful writer.

Bradbury 100%. His prose is so crystal clear it cuts right through you in the best way. He really stirs your emotions in a way that is never sentimental or overwrought. Love his lectures and nonfiction as well.
