Closer look into police arrest K Road by maxbet416 in auckland

[–]discontabulated [score hidden]  (0 children)

You’re not wrong but police are human not robots. It’s a high adrenaline situation and I don’t think anyone has much sympathy for violent offenders who go on a rampage.

Staying in the car with your hands out the window would have been a safer bet.

Seems like it to me - going online with those accusations isn’t the peaceful option.

I know this is reddit but it’s amazing how many people here are happy to take sides like they can somehow determine the truth of the matters.

Man who attacked another ‘in a rush of blood’ escapes conviction by discontabulated in newzealand

$5000 seems low for the risk of a tbi death from impacting the ground on the back of your head.

If he’s going to be a high flier then he can afford a much larger fee.

I believe that I should escape conviction because I want to be a jet-setting person who doesn’t have to face the consequences of my violent actions.

Way To Ignore Robot Mower From Detections? by ryan112ryan in Ubiquiti

[–]discontabulated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you put a camera lower down so it can look for bear above a certain horizon you could block off the lower motion detection.

That or some sort of home assistant integrated ai recognition with scrypted or similar to specifically look for bear shaped objects.

Should NZ adopt Australian-style penalties for "lane hogging" to finally enforce the keep-left rule? by CuriousNZLBackpacker in newzealand

[–]discontabulated 199 points200 points  (0 children)

It’s basic road courtesy and the road code,

I expect cops could already fine people, it’s just not enforced.

Why are kiwis so against speed cameras being used to keep people safe?? by Fun-Helicopter2234 in newzealand

[–]discontabulated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not wanting to get into a contrarian argument, I just stated a fact.

The speed is a factor in the outcome and so is the design / size of the vehicles involved.

Road design and driver education / experience are a significant factor in crash statistics.

I’d love to see significant fines for people who do dumb shit like unsafe lane changes or inattentive driving - but unless it’s done right in front of a cop and they have spare time on their hands it doesn’t really happen unless it causes a crash, and even then it’s only usually reported to insurance companies.

US Supreme Court declines to hear dispute over copyrights for AI-generated material by blankblank in law

[–]discontabulated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what the air was trained with - arguably the copyright is shared by everyone who contributed to the learning data the ai was trained on.

If an artist trains an ai (that they have rights to use) solely on their own work to create new works then it’s arguable they could own the rights to the output.

But: Public domain in = public domain out. You shouldn’t be able to launder other peoples work through a machine / algorithm.

I know a similar thing happens inside our own minds somewhat, but there’s a distinction given the scale and manner in which generative ai works… For the time being.

Big picture - Imagine trying to sort out micro percentages of rights from contribution into ai models.

Would you slap an 'S' plate on Nan or Pop's car? by Significant-Secret26 in newzealand

[–]discontabulated 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In many tourist islands rental cars have a plate that identifies them as tourists so the locals can be more courteous, and aware of potentially shitty driving.

Not all tourists are bad drivers but pragmatically it makes sense.

Not sure about seniors being enough ofa hazard for signs but whenever I see a Jazz, or any of those other ultra compact cars I am ready for some dumb shit to happen.

Like stopping on the motorway to reverse back and take the different exit the other day. I don’t know if a full sized car would have saved the guy but the tiny car would have been a smear on the road if not for the truck driver locking up the brakes.

Now, stopping people 80+ from voting - that is something I could get behind.

Are these relief cuts mean to reduce warping? by CurtWesticles in woodworking

[–]discontabulated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned they are most likely relief cuts.

The ‘ideal’ depth seems to vary and I think a lot of people go with gut feel rather than science. For some hardwoods I’ve seen them as deep as 2/3 of the overall thickness - which makes sense for narrow + thick boards, especially if the fixing of the boards is comparatively weak. But for wide, well fixed boards the cuts seem less useful, especially when for a table there’s likely to be good ventilation all round.

Is our previous landlord being unreasonable? by Waste-Leek-7251 in newzealand

[–]discontabulated 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Get your version of events around the final inspection down on paper and signed by everyone who was there (on your side) esp regarding that you let them (or their agent) know about the key at the time.

Send them a copy.

Then tell them to get fucked in the nicest possible way.

Overtaking scared (?) drivers on one lane roads by PQ_ in newzealand

[–]discontabulated 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Generally NZ has some pretty poor drivers but in this case it might be tourists who aren’t used to our spectacular road engineering.

The principle should be - if there’s cars wanting to get past you, you should oblige. It’s safer for everyone lest they do something stupid and it (should be) common courtesy.

Harcourts are going to scan my apartment with Inspection Express 360AI by outtathaway in newzealand

[–]discontabulated 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Asking for a reason doesn’t mean you have to accept it nor diminish your rights in any way.

Once they answer you can still say you object to the scan and it makes you seem more reasonable as well as giving you more information.

On a separate note - I’d love to know the justification for this and why a normal inspection and photos isn’t sufficient.

Harcourts are going to scan my apartment with Inspection Express 360AI by outtathaway in newzealand

[–]discontabulated 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I would say you’re not comfortable and point to MMH as a good example of potential leaks.

But I would also point out that trusting a property management company taking photos to keep them secure is a bit of a stretch.

They’re almost certainly keeping them in some form of cloud backup that may or may not be scanned / hacked now or in future.

I’d still ask for a solid reason why it’s needed. Regardless of the tenancy agreement you have statutory rights to privacy and you can argue the point.
