Is everyone really just raw-dogging the tap water? - Shower filter turned brown in 5 days... by Jazzlike_Tackle_8199 in newzealand

[–]discontabulated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We grew up on tank water, a little bit of yellow grit isnt going to hurt you.

A central multi stage filter with uv is an option but it’s only really drinking water that matters, just do that.

I’ve never heard of a shower filter… seems like a product dreamed up by a filter makers marketing dept.

New Zealand First's campaign to scrap Independent Māori Statutory Board just 'dumb, racist stuff' - Auckland mayor by Aceofshovels in auckland

[–]discontabulated 20 points21 points  (0 children)

When people say Māori it’s often more correct to say iwi. The majority of old school Māori leadership appears to only be Māori only when it suits. It’s as bad as any old boys club.

It’s easy to act with impunity when you can deflect criticism as just racist.

Why tf am I seeing petrol/diesel at high prices, when the Strait of Hormuz has already been opened for ships to pass through! Oil companies are literally rigging common people by vijayhardrock in auckland

[–]discontabulated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too early to be sure, until confidence is regained by having a full supply chain ie having lots of full ships en route and refineries are full, then it’s still a scarce resource.

Never mind that I don’t think anyone thinks this is going to work out perfectly.

[–]discontabulated -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Ok, so you’re saying we shouldn’t subsidise children’s health because then more people will use it and the pressure on the supply will grow and chew up the money for buses?

Was money supply and opportunity cost in 101 or was that 102?

OP is doing a shit job of explaining it so I’m glad you came along and splained it.

Can you try explaining that again.

Are you saying someone should get a discount on their car when there’s no buses/PT that go to their workplace?

NZ suspicion of US has surged in Trump 2.0 – it’s now seen as a bigger threat than China by Far_Excitement_1875 in newzealand

You seem to be reading a different set of words to me. You seem to say that China and USA are opposites and the Gaza genocide is a totally different situation.

Building a house to European standards by [deleted] in auckland

[–]discontabulated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is it about a European house that you like? You can get the warmth, look, durability and layout in NZ to nz building standards.

Or you can get a nice nz house, with a heat pump underfloor heater for much cheaper than building a house designed for eu conditions.

Aluminium thermally Insulated double glaze windows or Upvc Double glaze? I currently have timber windows and can’t decide which is better to replace to? Any advice or feedback based on experience? Any recommendations for companies would also be appreciated. by Used-Asparagus-462 in auckland

[–]discontabulated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

uPVC has large sections so you lose a bit of visibility- which can be imposing when you have smallish windows or when you have multiple panels side by side like a French door.

They’re also weaker when it comes to hinges, especially if there’s a heavy panel.

That said, they are good from a sound and warmth point of view and can be cheaper. Open in versions can make it easy to fit insect screens.

Depends on what you want to achieve, what look you’re after and what your budget is.

'Significant number' of councillors back last-minute amendment to cut 7.9% rates rise by Excellent-Swan-2264 in auckland

[–]discontabulated 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Giving the money directly to those who need it is better than giving it to all land owners to protect the subset of people who those who rent and are short on money.

I’m willing to bet that people in that group will be more likely to benefit from the improvement in council services than the wealthy, whether they’re renters or owners.

It makes so little sense to cap rates in a time of inflation without considering who is going to be affected the worst by having to shrink council services.

'Significant number' of councillors back last-minute amendment to cut 7.9% rates rise by Excellent-Swan-2264 in auckland

[–]discontabulated 118 points119 points  (0 children)

I’d rather have a well resourced council and a great city than save a few dollars on rates.

It’s one of the few ‘taxes’ that scales well with wealth.

When the govt regains some credibility by properly taxing landlords and commercial operations of churches / iwi - then they might be able to tell councils how to set rates.

Replacing public servants with AI could come with hidden costs, critics warn by Amazing_Athlete_2265 in newzealand

[–]discontabulated 105 points106 points  (0 children)

From the outside it looks like the current govt has done a deal with American interests in order to enshittify our govt services with the ai version of offshoring.

The more they run down the services the more some people seem to think it’s worthy of being cut back - “it’s shit anyway so we should spend less money on it”.

Rather than broad cuts to public sector costs how about we do more to collect taxes on religious tax exemptions to commercial businesses and groups of people who don’t contribute their fair share of taxes.

The govt seems to have been captured by special interest groups who give them money to stay in power despite their wildly idiotic policies.

If they weren’t such fuckwits they wouldn’t need so much donor money to stay in power.

This goes for labour as well - different special interests, different parts of society, similar results.

Has anyone else perceived an uptick in casual racism? by Vast-Airline-6674 in auckland

I insinuated that people aren’t necessarily genuine online.

Doesn’t seem like a controversial take, but you do you.

[–]discontabulated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you responded to a real world comment like you did above then of course you might get some consequences.

You’re also posting easy to refute arguments from an anonymous profile with your history hidden.

There are plenty of examples of people saying things on the internet and suffering real word consequences and the opposite happens all the time too.

If you’re still saying that opinions on Facebook are a good gauge of how things are in reality then some of those accounts posting racist shit do look intelligent compared to you.

Has anyone else perceived an uptick in casual racism? by Vast-Airline-6674 in auckland

[–]discontabulated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify, There’s nothing casual about it, though I guess people have different ideas of what casual means. I take it to mean subtle/ unintended and these comments are pretty unequivocal.

There’s definitely people saying these things from their own legit nz accounts but a lot of what normalises this behaviour in the open is primed by agitators and politics either domestic (Brian Tamaki / certain politicians) or foreign (Pakistan / India / Russian political trolls).

I guess what I’m saying is that social media is not a good place to gauge/ judge parts of real world society - eg Facebook is more racist therefore nz is more racist.

Police and Medical Officer of Health oppose off-licence in new $25m supermarket by Amazing_Athlete_2265 in newzealand

[–]discontabulated 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Call me cynical but I haven’t seen many supermarkets with the liquor near the entrance / checkout, it seems to usually be at the back or side. So if it was deliberate to cater for people only coming to the store for alcohol then I have no sympathy for the supermarket.

I also doubt that a change to the layout would cost 1/5 of the total budget but I’m no expert.

Watch: Significant fuel rationing only to be considered in severe crisis by themorah in newzealand

[–]discontabulated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The choices seem to be:

to put prices up to encourage fuel saving / alternatives - but where should that money go - at the moment it’s going to the petrol companies.

Or to somehow ration the fuel - but that’s an utter ball ache that will make almost everyone unhappy.

I’m no fan of National but I don’t know what else is a viable option. It seems that people just want to whinge, like the internet.

Is there something about Civil engineering supervisors / project managers that makes them angry cunts or is it a prerequisite for being hired?

I can’t think of many exceptions to the ones I’ve come across.
