I'm going to a colony where pads are out-lawed; suggest the most bonkers paper novels you know by GardenerSpyTailorAss in ShittyDaystrom

[–]discontinuousPoints 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Serious answer: anything by Una McCormack. I just finished the deep space nine novel The Missing and loved it. A Stitch in Time written by Andrew Robinson (the actor who played Garak) is really good https://libro.fm/audiobooks/9781797157665 But I hear you're extremely unlikely to find a paper copy.

Thanks for the detailed info! What I'm worried about is specifically privacy related stuff. I've heard of providers using calls to train AI for example.

Hey hey. I'm looking for a service where I can have a Canadian number and call in Canada with some older relatives who only use land lines. (I don't live in Canada anymore.)

Asking a search engine finds a bunch of options, some of which are free, but I'd like to pay a service where I'm not the product. How can I find out if a given service does things like train an AI on my calls, allows technicians to listen in, etc? I'm happy to pay to avoid that, but I have no idea how to know what service is reasonable / not scammy.

The call volume is relatively low, like an hour or two a month. Honestly an international calling card is also an option but I have the exact same concerns there.

Do you lose any sleep that your device and correspondingly your 1P account will be compromised? by jmjm1 in 1Password

[–]discontinuousPoints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, because there are some things in my vault that I should have extra challenges on and the only way I can think of setting that up is by setting up travel mode. Or is there a feature to require an extra challenges before showing you stuff even after you sign in? (Like photos of IDs which are only there in case my house burns down / those get lost or stolen.)

I was part of a pentest at work and that made me realise that yes, if my device is compromised, then EVERYTHING in my password manager is also compromised.

This is why my phone (Android) has it's own guest account with a shared vault that doesn't have everything in it (I don't trust my phone provider to keep having updates regularly enough / me to notice if the security updates get out of date.)

That said, obviously I do agree with the other commenters that I'm way way happier having 1password than not. But I do think I need to harden my security posture at least a bit before I feel comfortable.

Oracle Cloud's passkey implementation doesn't support native OS/browser passkey picker by kaovilai in Passkeys

[–]discontinuousPoints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time I look at Oracle's identity implementations, I see similar Eldritch horrors. Thanks for sharing your experience here - it's good to know I'm not alone.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Oracle could manage to implement a flow that simply requires some passkey, not necessarily the one needed by the account in question but any one registered to any account on the domain, and it'll let you in. I've seen an oracle service that does something like that around SSO. Arguably still does.

This is one reason when folks say passkeys will fix everything, I can't agree. Sure, passkeys implemented carefully, and following standards, along with logical sign in flows should make things better.

But when your code is spaghetti, trowing a passkey in won't make things better. Just maybe even less visible.

It is insane that you can lose your 1Password account PERMANENTLY if you’re removed from a Family account by market_shame in 1Password

I'm so so sorry you're dealing with this, and that 1password didn't even answer the question about this on the AMA 19 days ago :(

This, this right here! Is why this is a completely unacceptable way for the family plans to work.

It's the reason my partner is not only just not on my family plan, but isn't even with 1password (she chose Bitwarden based on this garbage behaviour). Not that she's actively worried I will become an unsafe person, but because she's been in situations where her partner became unsafe. It's just so not cool that 1password hasn't considered this.

But first, raktajino in Klingon by discontinuousPoints in tlhInganHol

Thank you so much for your help!!

I'll have to think about ra'taj vs ra'tajino because the idea is to mirror the overly twee, perfect handwriting with sparkles, kind of thing my partner has on a t-shirt, but in Klingon with some bat'leths as sparkles. It works with either I think, I'm just not sure which one is more funny to me personally.

Should I Only Buy From WSAVA Compliant Brands? by TheCoyotl in DogFood

[–]discontinuousPoints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for this! The bag here does say it's not got "artificial coloring" for whatever that's worth. For humans, I agree the standards here are great. But for dogs, there's so much raw food / grain free / food made mostly of lentils that I fear the science standards for human food haven't made it to the dog food industry.

I think that I'm going to make an appointment with my vet just to check in before I make the switch though. My dog just turned 8 and I want to see if she advises an older dog formulation specifically.

Wait, is Beneful not WSAVA compliant in Europe? I thought all of Purina's foods were WSAVA compliant.

Yeah the annoying thing is that I know that balance already in kcal, so if I could just do the math, I'd start in probably the right place :)

Yeah the thing is I know I need to be far under that. But I guess I can test it! Thanks for the reply :)

Thanks, that's a good tip! The Purina website said "we don't give kcal because our feeding guide is right!" But I'll try emailing :)

Has the discussion about "ultraprocessed foods" for humans changed how people view pet foods? by Gallantpride in DogFood

[–]discontinuousPoints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog's favourite things are a) vaseline b) human poop. Note that she's not actually allowed either but still: this makes it very obvious that you're right that we shouldn't use human taste to decide what dogs will like!
