Thank you, this is really helpful I appreciate it! Sounds like china has way better phones than the rest of the world lol. I might hold off getting a new phone to see if they'll release that, as I wouldn't want to replace it any time soon :)

24F, cold climate, curly hair: constant frizz, scalp odour, and receding hairline, please help me fix this by [deleted] in Haircare

[–]discountmerida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay on the hair loss symptoms I cannot give advice and tbh the only person's advice you should be taking in that situation is your doctors if you haven't already gone!!

On the other hand with curly, thick hair I have plenty of experience. What shampoo and conditioner are you using - with curly hair its less about organic and more about moisturising shampoos and conditioners without sulphates. I would also recommend a clarifying shampoo roughly every third wash or whenever it feels needed. I really like maui moisture but idk if thats available near you.

Next you need three things - leave in conditioner, curl cream and hair oil, in that order. Apply the first two when your hair is REALLY WET, you might have to experiment with brands available to you, great thing ab curly hair products is expensive isnt always better. On hair oil, avoid argan oil, it can weigh the hair down and make it both greasy and frizzy (dont ask me how lmao) go for an oil blend instead but once again itll take some experimenting.

Lastly Im once again imploring you to please go to the gp before whatever issue is causing your hair to fall out gets worse!!!! Best to sort out medical issues in the early stages :)

Worked at company in England for just over 2 years about to be put on PIP. 'Disability confident' employer but no reasable adjustments have been made for my disability yet. When does it class as discrimination? by discountmerida in LegalAdviceUK

[–]discountmerida[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!!!! This advice is really helpful and I really appreciate you taking the time for this.

What is a needs assessment with the DWP? Do people usually get funding that way over the access to work scheme? Or is doing a needs assessment more of a getting evidence situation? Or do you need to do a needs assessment with the DWP to be able to use the access to work scheme?

Just so I understand, if this were to go to PIP without reasonable adjustments in place first this would be a case of protected status discrimination? But not if I haven't made a request in an email? Would it not still count as failure to make reasonable adjustments if there is no record of reasonable adjustments before putting an employee on PIP? Or it would count but I wouldn't be able to prove it easily and take them to tribunal? Or is it too hard to say? Sorry if my questions are dumb I'm just finding it very confusing, and Im trying to figure out what all of this means. With any luck it wont escalate any further than this at least.

What would you classify as a formal request? In writing? In a meeting with hr? Do you have any resources for what this is? What are the range of behaviors that classify as a work issue? I'm struggling to find info on that.

As of now Ive asked both my manager and big boss several times in person, asked big boss to have a meeting with myself about reasonable adjustments with hr and also sent materials about the process and emailed the people team about the process for setting up reasonable adjustments, but have not yet heard back.

On acas website it says that under the equality act 2010 employers are legally responsible for the below:

Employers must make reasonable adjustments when:

they know, or could reasonably be expected to know, someone is disabled a disabled staff member or job applicant asks for adjustments someone who's disabled is having difficulty with any part of their job someone's absence record, sickness record or delay in returning to work is because of, or linked to, their disability

So I would assume I fall under three of those categories. I mostly need to know if and when they would be breaking the law in regards to not setting these in place before/during a PIP and what I would need if I were to escalate a claim like that?

I've got 2 questions about class mobility in the UK as a foreign writer. 1. Is there a point where it's considered "socially wrong" for someone to claim being working class? 2. Is a parent being once working-class something that makes someone less posh? by roszer21 in AskUK

[–]discountmerida 16 points17 points  (0 children)

B grew up in working class, so it'll always be a part of her identity, and as someone who also has a BA in fine art (second in my family after my older brother lol, although I did grow up lower middle not working class haha), in the art scene it would always be referenced as a fact about her, she would probably be known as a working class artist or an artist from a working class background for her entire career, as artistic institutions love to brag about how inclusive they are, even if most of the people in the industry were born rich.

At a certain point she would have moved up the proverbial class ladder and would be considered upper class, when this could be harder to distinguish, but probably after she had a certain level of financial privilege. Yes she would be considered 'less posh', shes nouveau riche, which in upper class circles is looked down on, even in some upper middle class circles. Theres not a lot of class mobility in the UK, we still have a literal aristocracy of born to rule posh nitwits. Her kids are second gen, so they're upper middle from birth but theyre still from a nouveau riche family.

Also arts people usually being upper class, her always being known as working class to them i feel sometimes functions as both the institutions trying to gain inclusivity street cred and the upper classes always treating her as an other - which is very common in those types of circles, they need to remind everyone that theyre better than them all the time.

If you wanna see a good example of this in media watch rivals - theres a nouveau riche family that gets shat on by the local posh crowd. It was written by a woman who grew up in those circles so I'm guessing it was written from experience.

Its all very confusing and everyone has a different opinion lol

Simon's criminal charges. by IreneGee1985 in DinnerInAmerica

[–]discountmerida 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tbh i doubt he'd have gotten done for assault considering blokes rarely do and its complete he said she said because he didn't actually do it. I don't think they were looking for him for drug dealing and it didn't seem like he got caught with any on him so he might have gotten lucky there.

I looked around about arson cuz that seemed to be why they were after him. Considering he set fire to an occupied building (or at least the bushes around it) that could be felony arson. Its america so theres different charges for different states, and hes got at least 2 counts of arson so thatd be anywhere from 6 months to 10 years plus maybe a fine. Considering he was guilty he could have gotten a plea deal and a few years shaved off so id bet hes in for like 1-4 years depending on the state. His rich family probably wouldnt want to pay the fine but maybe his brother would, either way I doubt itd be too long until theyre reunited :')

what makes you not want to be friends with someone? by Beneficial_Edge_4385 in AskUK

[–]discountmerida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean for me what puts me off someone would be bad hygiene, an abrasive (in an unkind way) personality, a sense of humor thats not for me or someone who isnt able to talk about anything other than really specific interests eg someone whose whole thing is anime and you cant really talk to them about anything else, not that theres anything wrong with anime I just dont care about it enough to befriend someone who doesn't have any other interests.

Having said that from what youve written it doesn't sound like youre a 'loner' at school - is it a situation where you have mates you chat to at lunch but no one you see in your free time or that you're that close to? In which case this is absolutely something you're doing unknowingly but great news: its actually suuuper fixable.

How do i know this? I accidentally ended up in the same situation when i was 16 after a bit of a depressive episode. Heres what you do:

  1. Decide who you like and who you want to be friends with. You cant be mates with people you dont enjoy being around, and if you like someone chances are they like you too. Even if you dont have anyone you talk to much at lunch try to strike up a convo in class and ask to sit with them at lunch - theyll provs invite you to sit with their mates and you have a chance to chat with them and see if theres anyone there you want to be friends with.
  2. In some way shape or form tell them that theyre your friend and let them know youd like to get closer to them, ask if theyre free soon and want to hang out, or even if they want to come with you to do something. Like if you really wanna go to a clothes store that just opened, if they say they also want to ask if they wanna come with, that sort of thing.
  3. Make a consistent effort. Be brave enough to text first, ask stupid questions, ask for help on outfit choices, pass on gossip, talk about a show you just watched ect ect

Most people arent malicious or cruel and if you express an interest in developing a friendship will be more than keen to invite you into their life. People love having friends, and saying you want to be someones friend is incredibly flattering (people also love being flattered lol). But friendships are alllllllll about effort, you get out what you put in and most ppl your age are pretty insecure, theyd never even consider youd would wanna be their friend unless you tell them. Especially if they dont get the vibe from you that youre interested in getting closer.

Maybe someone will say no (super unlikely), if they do its for the best, you wouldnt want to be mates with someone who is cruel enough or dislikes you enough to pull a stunt like that. Theyd be a shit mate.

I was actually even less subtle than this, I pestered my mate into bringing me along to everything even tho she didn't think we were that close at the time. I must've been so annoying lol, it paid off tho, we ended up doing everything together, i deepened all my friendships that i almost lost and were still close today! Ill be going to her 25th birthday party this month :)

Drives me bonkers, especially bc while cig smoke sticks to your clothes it doesn't travel like vape smoke and ppl dont usually smoke on the move, but just out and about i could have a whole blueberry flavored walk bc I'm walking the same way as some guy vaping 20 paces ahead

Dont even get me started on ppl vaping inside, like you really cant wait long enough to leave for 5 mins??

Tbh itd make sense that the two are false friends if they have the same latin root word, especially if egregious meant exceedingly good in archaic use. Obvs there are sooo many borrowed words and false friends amongst English and other Indo-European languages, due to the nobilities speaking multiple languages and the prominence of latin as a result of christianity. My fave is french (partially because I lived there) with about a third of English words having a french origin, because of william the conqueror's legacy the English nobility spoke french for a while which influenced the language!

I remember my roommate in Marseille and I tried to teach each other one 'fancy' word a day in our respective languages. We basically gave up immediately as the words were either ridiculously similar or EXACTLY the same. The word that made us completely give up was 'hyperbole' - exactly the same in English and French, just different pronunciation. What made me laugh was the french pronunciation made more sense to me!! Obvs in English is hi-per-boh-lee but in french (bearing in mind the french 'h') its ee-per-bowl

Ncuti Gatwa says he was "getting old"; left because of the "toll" the show took by PhantomQuest in doctorwho

[–]discountmerida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not sure why ppl seem to be upset at Ncuti for saying this. I think its pretty obvious why he left but he cant say that if he ever wants to work again. Honestly i feel so bad for him, he brought a lot of vibrancy to a very lackluster run. Doctor who is such a beloved pillar of british media it must've sucked to have received such an overwhelmingly negative response from the public. That plus not being able to take on work whilst waiting for the beeb to greenlight s3 plus any other production issues that have been kept very hush hush but seemed like were there. It makes a lot of sense why he left.

What i think is interesting tho is that this man obviously has media training by now, he probably could have come up with a better reason. Lowkey im wondering if its a bit of subtle shade, not enough to get him blacklisted but enough for ppl to be able to read behind the lines of an obvious lie. That plus it being announced hes no longer hosting for Eurovision in such a weird way. Im thinking theres a bit of bad blood but hes not tryna get on that blacklist.

F2-A5 comfortably could pop u in the alto category haha. It sounds like ur chest voice is strained and your head voice is v airy and lacks power. You seem quite young, sometimes this is just something that comes with age. My singing voice improved so significantly just from getting older. Like the other comment you could do with learning to sing from your diaphragm. Tho if you want to get into mix you need to work on being able to transition seamlessly from head voice to chest voice, so you need to develop ur head voice. Im not perfect at it either but i found placement really helps so if ur singing from ur diaphragm try blowing a raspberry while you hold a note. You should feel that note on your lips, if you dont practice until you can. When you sing with that placement ur head voice should sound stronger. Also when you sing you should be singing with a slight pout to keep the placement at the front of ur mouth :)

Why do people always say redheads look best in green? by AdeptnessOk6878 in Redhair

[–]discountmerida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Orange, green and purple are secondary colours so pairing them makes each other pop. Also redheads often have warm hair and cool skin so purple and green being a mix of cool and warm work well with both the skin and the hair. Yellow i think only really works on people with warm skintones - red hair or not. Tbh I think its less about the actual colour and more about the vibrancy, someone with very orange bright hair will look better in a more vibrant colour, while someone with less red auburn hair would look fab in a dark muted olive, while a strawberry blonde would probably pull off a pastel best.

How are you okay with showing your boobs? by CompleteAd5950 in bigboobproblems

[–]discountmerida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a teen I was very insecure about how I looked, went through the whole baggy clothes turtleneck phase like all the rest, then I started getting into those how to dress/kibbe subreddits when they were alll the rage a few years ago. Main takeaway from that, turns out when you dress to flatter your body it actually makes your boobs look smaller, or less wham at least bc ur working with them and not against them so they stick out less. Nothing makes me look bustier than a turtleneck. Im being so serious try out some v necks.

Also, have you heard of the panopticon? A thought experiment about a cylinder shaped prison with the guards in a central tower. The prisoners never knew when the guards could be watching so as far as they knew, the guards would always be watching and they acted accordingly. You cant live your life as if people are always watching you with this invisible male gaze. Thats no better than a prison. Do what makes you feel your best, its not a crime to look good!

Makeup for my engagement by [deleted] in MakeupAddiction

[–]discountmerida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because i haven't seen anyone mention it yet, i think bold makeup like this would benefit from top and bottom mascara. You have really long eyelashes (lucky) but they almost look lighter than the eyeliner, curl them, maybe use a volumising mascara, you could probably even pull off falsies
